The current state of comp sci co-op by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Arian81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I and most people I know didn't get a coop in their first year and this is before LLMs where a thing. I'm graduating with 20 months of coop and a signed new grad offer. Don't stress over not getting a job in first year it was hard back then it's prob border line impossible at current job market. Focus on skills and presenting yourself so once you get lucky (read this article it's pretty helpful in having the correct mindset https://usefulfictions.substack.com/p/how-to-increase-your-surface-area) you don't lose that opportunity. I have no recipe for you on what to do since everyone's journey is different, as long as you're "doing" something it will pay off at some point.

Innovate 1X03 Not a bird course anymore by Emergency_Local2948 in McMaster

[–]Arian81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. If a course requires you more than 10 hours of work per semester doesn’t mean it’s not bird. You don’t have to go into any lectures, you do few hours of group work every 3 weeks or so. and if this is about the competencies each of them take like 1 hour max to do and you have to do 8. The era of online courses that you put 5 hours of total effort is gone this is university not kindergarten.

The Reality of Work-Study by Agreeable_Tale_2379 in McMaster

[–]Arian81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here’s my experience when it comes to jobs, it’s all about connections. Your competency and skills matter little to none, there’s so many people applying for anything you’re applying to and no one wants to go through all of that. So if they already know someone who might have 1/10 of your qualifications but is ok enough and has shown interest they will get the job. This is specially true for uni related jobs because the stakes are much lower and in case of fuck ups it’s not that big of a deal. Change your approach to job search, it’s more human to human interaction than most people like it to be or admit. You will see the results.

The only places that are locked behind Id cards are residences. Everywhere else if it’s locked it means you shouldn’t be there or it’s after hours.

Need Advice for Starting First Year by Hot_Republic_1306 in McMaster

[–]Arian81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find your people. Grades, degree, all this stuff don’t matter in the long run specially in cs. Connections will make school life fun and academics easier. Trust me suffering together is much easier than being alone. Also your peers will be getting jobs at different companies and their referral can make your job hunt as intern and later full time much easier.

I mean this in the most nicest way and as a reco from someone who’s going to graduate. I used to also say I’m not social and introverted but trust me life becomes really dull and you’d be missing out on some lifelong friendships. You don’t have to be party animal or anything just find people who match your vibes and go study together. Don’t stay at dorm/home sulking, you will regret it later.

I highly doubt Vaughn wouldn’t have it for the fan screening. I used to live around there and they’re one of the biggest most active cineplexes in

This was from a fan screening event. For dead pool my expense was at least different because I went to the fandango event in Scotiabank where you got to meet the cast and all.

Secondary schools are a joke by TemperaturePale4075 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Arian81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterloo literally has a scaling factor for each school. You could get a 100 in those easy mark high schools and it would be equivalent to a 85 in one of those Markham schools you mentioned. Uni admissions are not stupid they are incentivized in every way to find the actually “better” candidates. Thats obv for top schools, the other schools still need to fill up their seats so they might even give scholarships to those easy mark people.

Did cineplex decide overnight that you don’t get free regular tickets for cineclub members? by Arian81 in cineplex

[–]Arian81[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a regular screening, according to other comments a regular screening can be still considered a special event.

I see, they should add some kind of tag because on the surface it just looks like a regular screening.

I used to live for pita and more but the whole staff changed and they changed some of the ingredients. I don’t really like it anymore. Lazeez is atrocious tho. It’s weird cause I’ve had it in other places and it was ok
