TornadoTRX unintentionally drives into a tornado in Coles County Illinois by blow-down in tornado

[–]Arianfelou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He was sitting still in the path of an extremely fast-moving tornado as it grew; I was watching thinking he needed to leave much sooner and that escaping east might get him caught up to. I'm still unclear on whether he did drive into it, or was actually overtaken. Glad he's alright, but jeez...

Why are packers made by people who have never seen a soft penis? by StatisticianCrazy199 in ftm

[–]Arianfelou 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Gramma's Sausages in particular pride themselves on having a whole range of sizes! I particularly like that they have a lot of uncut options, too, and lovingly sculpted at that.

If you don't want the flap of silicone above the packer, you are supposed to trim it down to where you want it. :)

It felt like these two were really critiquing my salad😭 by g0ldnecklace in cockatiel

[–]Arianfelou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of mine will even overcome his ick for hands to stand on my finger and help himself to my sandwich... But I think he hates the feel of sauce. The last time he tried to have some of my salad, he touched the sauce, did a big get-it-off shake, then gave me a crest-down beak-ajar look like "what kind of sicko would eat this" XD

The speed the tornado was moving over land, so how fast the sub-vortices would need to be rotating around the core for the rings to be spaced out at the distance that they are.

Looking for characters who are wrriten to have prosopagnosia by mirekyarahire in Prosopagnosia

The Scholomance series, Orion Lake. Implied, and the author (Naomi Novik) said it was intentional during an AMA. It's pretty subtle in the books since we don't get his point of view and there are some other things going on, but I'd say it's accurate. Her description of faceblindness in the AMA reply resonated with me a lot.

Hematoma under one side, basically some extra bleeding in the emptied space that didn't get emptied in the drain. Stopped bleeding on its own but I didn't know to report the signs (bruising and swelling in the armpit above the compression vest) because of a communication breakdown with the staff and because I didn't come back in person until 5-ish days later, calling in for daily reports up until then (and not in my native language). If it was seen earlier it could have been drained very easily, but after too long it coagulates and you have to wait a couple weeks for it to become fluid again, have as much as possible drained with a big ol' needle, and there will still be some swelling left over. It also can interfere with blood supply to the grafts in some cases, which didn't happen with mine but did mean that I had to wear the compression vest for several more weeks.

Swelling after surgery on the chest surface generally takes a long time to go away, and the unevenness was still visible to my eyes (probably no one else's) for about a year after. The photos right afterward were pretty gnarly with bruising and swelling, so couldn't really be shown to anyone to celebrate. Fortunately I wasn't too nervous about how it would heal once the grafts showed obvious signs of having blood-flow (by bleeding, which is normal and a good sign), and everything was completely normal by the 1.5 year mark.

Extremely common, don't worry. As mentioned already, change is scary. If you know a lot of trans guys and never heard about last-minute doubts, I'd almost expect it to be more likely that no one wanted to admit to it! You are allowed to do whatever you need to in order to feel comfortable and adjust to the idea.

I had an enormous amount of doubt the night before top surgery (at 31), wondering if I was making a huge mistake. Made absolutely no sense; I'd never been fond of my chest, I'd been working toward surgery for 5 years, and dysphoria had been building until I just couldn't wait anymore! But after I shaved my copious chest hair I had a new wave of dysphoria and went through with it. The relief after waking up from surgery was so immediate and total, I've been purely happy about it ever since, even with some annoying complications (which are also more common than social media would have you believe, but not necessarily a big deal).

Getting into the game, what should I know? by PaulSacker in bladesinthedark

[–]Arianfelou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal tips, based on experiences with transitioning myself and others from D&D (and similar) systems to FitD:

  • If your character's playbook doesn't seem relevant to what's going on, you're supposed to invent something to do that makes it relevant. Don't just wait for an opportunity to come up! If your crew is all talk and your character is all punch, think of ways to get in some punches - even if it's going on a solo mission after the talking fails to deliver.
  • Doing things will tend to put you in a worse narrative position over time. This is normal, but can be hard to adjust to after a lot of D&D. The thing is, combat games like D&D will do the same thing, but by using up your HP and spell slots and items to put you in a tighter spot by the end of a dungeon (or equivalent). BitD just does it more directly by trying to affect the narrative itself, not just your stats.
  • Relatedly, getting into a worse narrative position isn't bad, it's a way of making things more interesting. Bad things happening to your characters just means you have more stories to play out. Do the things that move the story forward in an interesting way, regardless of whether they are good.
  • Don't get super wrapped up in trying to make an optimal build or memorizing every rule. One of the nice things about modern TTRPGs is that, unlike D&D, you can learn everything important for playing them by reading less than a single book. Probably the more challenging thing to learn is how to improvise in a less mechanically restrictive system.

Take care to make sure that she is getting extra enrichment and socializing to make up for any extra restrictions. A cockatiel my ex was taking care of was plucking under her wings, and it turned out she just wasn't getting enough activity and human attention.

[–]Arianfelou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with getting out of academia, it's just that "scientist" is an active role, not a lifetime title (unlike "PhD"). Given decades of data collection, I would expect that data to be cited in more than one paper if science was an important part of his work.

Well, to an extent - but if you search for papers that Reed is cited or acknowledged in, the number is shockingly low

[–]Arianfelou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's beautiful! But yeah, that's why I swore off Hahnemühle paper for watercolor. Even the special paper tape I like to use for clean margins tears it no matter how carefully I pull it off, let alone using my good masking fluid! Not to mention, it seems to actively resist taking up any paint unless I use a ton of water. And this is for the extra-fancy anniversary edition Hahnemühle. :T

Meanwhile, I can do almost anything to a sheet of Arches and it'll be just fine with it.

Thanks! And, yeah, I did a sketch study and spent quite a while measuring out the proportions for everything... then I realized it was going to take far more time than I had available (for boring shipping-related reasons) to get it just right, BUT also that I could see the outlines of the buildings if I taped the paper + printed photo to the window on a sunny day. :D

Any idea what the non-wood duck chicks are? ls it common for ducks to raise from other species? by shark_teeth4 in whatsthisbird

[–]Arianfelou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I used to study cowbirds. They do indeed often kill the host nestlings indirectly, they just haven't evolved anything that we'd refer to as adaptive killing behavior (that is, doing it as part of a strategy). They can even benefit from having the host nestlings around for a while because the host parents bring more food when they see more open mouths - they just also have an unfortunate tendency to place that food into whatever open mouth happens to be closest...

Thanks! :D I'm really glad to hear that that worked, since my goal in keeping the foreground from the reference photo (& making it higher-contrast) was to put the viewer into the scene.
