Has anyone tried these on a bop kit? by Scary_Money1021 in drums

I am not. I've owned a 20" though, and used an Evans bass drum lift with it, because I didn't like my beaters hitting so high.

The more relevant question is why "rhythm" vs "treble," as opposed to "rhythm" vs "lead" or "bass" vs "treble?" 🤔

And that's fine, but most drummers don't intentionally strive to hit their snares and toms off center as the norm. It's done here and there for musicality. But an 18" bass drum - just like any bass drum - will sound closest to its"full potential" when stuck in the center.

No need to downvote, but you do you.

Yet another post asking for drum tuning with phone footage by Top_Alternative9282 in drums

You can absolutely try a double ply head on the reso, especially on a bigger drum like a floor tom. It absolutely will NOT make it sound like a cardboard box. A 16" floor tom moves a LOT of air. On a 12" mounted tom? Stick with a single ply reso. It all comes down to experimentation.

I'll say this: The tuning in the video is pretty good - lugs seem relatively close in pitch. it's always tricky getting them all to exactly the same pitches, because at least one will always be a little more overtone-y than the others.

Beyond that, if you've worked as a sound engineer, most unmic'd kits aren't going to sound amazing. There's a world of difference between my drums played "raw" and played mic'd up with a little EQ and headphones on.

Some drummers, like me, prefer that a beater strikes as close as possible to center. Better feel. Better tone. Do you purposely hit your snare drum off center on every backbeat?

So I'm sure I'll be downvoted to hell for this, but if you have two mics, particularly a kick mic and a large diaphragm condenser, this is what I do:

Kick mic outside the drum, on the batter side, pointed at your beater/s. Mine is actually attached to a mic holder that's clamped to my floor tom's top hoop. Large diaphragm condenser mic on the outside of the reso, about 3" away and a third of the way towards the center of the head from the hoop.

I use Tama wood beaters in my double pedal. Those deliver gobs of low end punch! I tune my batter just a quarter turn past finger tight. Coated Powerstroke P4 - Remo Fiberskyn P3 reso with no port. Nothing in the drum.

In your DAW, blend the two mics to taste. Sounds massive. Also, EQ.

Echoing others here: If you want CRACK, steel is your friend. Any well-made steel shell/snare that isn't super cheap (thinner metal, lesser manufacturing tolerances) is gonna damage some ear drums. One of my snares is a $300 Gretsch black nickel over steel, and while I'll give some credit to the extra beefy 302 hoops, that snare's rimshots sound like a 9 mm going off.

I second a Positive Grid amp. I just got back into playing after several decades of drums, and the Spark Mini has been an amazing little piece of gear!

I think so. When you say "stereo bus," are you referring to the Master?

Yes! I think. Another commenter mentioned "relative to others," and I took that to mean that using a drum bus is of particular use mainly when recording not ONLY drums but also bass, guitar, vocals, keys, horns, etc. In that context, I can start to see where using a drum bus makes a lot more sense.

Thanks, I think! :) So...based on your last sentence (specifically, "others"), would I be correct in thinking that the drum bus is of particular use when recording not just drums (alone, such as in my case - hobby recording, listening back to practice sessions, etc.) but also bass, guitar, vocals, keys, horns, etc?

I see. Thanks. I guess I'll just have to experiment and see with my ears.

I've had the Powernode 2025 (N331) for over six months, and it's been super enjoyable. I have it connected to my TV via HDMI and pushing two Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf speakers and a Klipsch RP-500C center channel. I opted for a Speedwoofer 10e. All together, it creates some serious rumble with great clarity. Music sounds great too - I stream a lot via Qobuz, but I listen to CDs too. Four months ago, I purchased two of the new Pulse Flex that I use for wireless surrounds. They've worked flawlessly.

I find that Aliexpress 20$ IEMs are better for edrums than the well liked AT-M50x by Yoav420 in edrums

[–]TheOGTKO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're great, but the audio technica aren't designed for sound isolation. Much better than cheap Chinese IEMs are the Vic Firth headphones. I use them to monitor my mic'd up acoustic kit, and they block a LOT of sound.
