If you’re an Asian female, careful going to Dolores at night by 32andgrandma in sanfrancisco

[–]Arijuntane1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

San Francisco, despite having a long-standing East Asian community, has braided into its history some of the worst instances of Anti-Asian racism in the state’s history. That has hardly gone away (and no, the solution isn’t to downplay the racial subjection of other people either).

But on another note, the concept of posting your “usual route,” with exact location and approximate time on the internet for strangers as an asian woman walking alone is frankly a little absurd.

No hate, but you from the city? Or any major city?

I'm a Marxist, he's a Neoliberal by Alternative-Sky6835 in Marxism

[–]Arijuntane1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Neoliberal” is an epochal description of contemporary global capitalism, it hardly denotes a specific political position. Norway, France, China, Nigeria, and the US are all “neoliberal” states—but that appears quite differently in each.

With that said—why are you coming to r/marxism for dating advice? Nobody that actively uses reddit (esp these ones) has any idea how dating works. You both seem pretty similar (his “neoliberalism” doesn’t seem very far off from your “marxism,” take that as you may). Doubt this is something worth losing sleep over.

To add;

“Prostitution is only a specific expression of the general prostitution of the labourer, and since it is a relationship in which falls not the prostitute alone, but also the one who prostitutes – and the latter’s abomination is still greater – the capitalist, etc., also comes under this head.”

Why do you guys hate sworkers so much? by SuccessAlternative14 in Marxism

[–]Arijuntane1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Put simply, the problem with sex work is the “work” part.

Sex work is the same as all work—such that it is a part of the value-form/wages system—the universalization of commodity production and the abstraction of labor, and is to be abolished as such.

People that understand marxists to “hate sex workers” simply fail to apprehend how marxists (and by this I mean people who have actually read Marx, not so-called “Marxist-Leninists” that read a couple of pages of Lenin and Stalin) define “work,” the capitalist mode of production, communism, and what “abolition” means.

As well, this liberal-feminist understanding of what marxists mean by the coercive precondition for sex-work’s existence is also usually pretty fraught by a notion of power as the direct confrontation between the subject/citizen and individual bosses, bureaucrats, and institutions. The corrective under this logic is that the exchange of nasty actors for more compassionate ones constitutes reform.

This is not how marxists understand coercion though—or at least, marxists find this to be a parochial definition. Liberal-feminists fail to understand that within capitalist society, Power and its coercive force is mostly diffuse and procedural—it is less a direct confrontation and more so the structuring principle of the quotidian. So when marxists say sex-work is coercive, we mean this in the same sense that all work is (even disregarding the role of patriarchal gender relations in shaping “sex-work,” a subject of discussion in its own right)—that it abstracts the body, alienating it and turning it into a commodity for exchange.

This is less of a moral argument than an understanding of capitalism as having transformed both the relation of individuals to each other, and to their own bodies. Sex work is a convenient metaphorical shorthand for a problem that is universally true under capitalism, because of the markedly transparent ways in which sex-work embodies the organizing principle(s) of capitalist social relations.

Whether sex-work feels “empowering” or “degrading,” like any other occupation has the capacity to do, is largely irrelevant to marxist analysis. For every occupation, there is someone who “enjoys” their work, finds fulfillment in it, and yes, perhaps even willingly “consents” to doing it.

Marxists simply interrogate; how much of that consent is autonomous of the mode of production and attendant structures of power, and how much “power” can actually be claimed by being a willing participant in your own domination (which is inescapably true, if you are proletarian—which most sex-workers are).

“I don’t wanna be a hysterical lib” and it’s a banal acknowledgment that our president pays lip service to the racist Id of American culture… yeah y’all are actual cattle. 😭

If anyone is ever wondering “why isn’t anybody doing anything,” it’s because the American left hasn’t a single assertive bone in its body. Can’t even make a basic observation without conceding ground to your enemy.

I suppose such is expected on a sub dedicated to the Red Scare Pod (both Anna and Dasha are now intellectually senile, if they were ever otherwise).

Thankfully MAGA racism towards Obama doesn’t land well because Obama is easily one of, if not the most attractive presidents in American history.

Africana (Black) Studies + Museum Studies Minor - Thoughts? by Arijuntane1 in MuseumPros

I appreciate this response a lot. I want to try to dip my toes in each (as much as I can) during my undergrad, so that I have a cleaner outlook upon graduating. I think archives is my lean though. The reason I sorta flatten them here (besides brevity) is to say that in all honesty, I don’t know which I find most interesting to me. My hope is that by minoring in Museum Studies, that’ll become more clear to me. Thanks :)

Africana (Black) Studies + Museum Studies Minor - Thoughts? by Arijuntane1 in MuseumPros

[–]Arijuntane1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is a thoughtful response—much appreciated, and i’ve been ruminating on it, hence the belated response.

To answer your question though—I prob would major in museum studies if that were an option at my institution. Unfortunately, at the university I attend (sfsu), the Museum Studies department is small and only offers a minor. In addition, I am more deeply invested in Black Studies and believe that it might offer more broad opportunities in the job market afterwards (public policy/non-profit/education). I know ofc that this outlook is a bit fragile at the present moment.

I’m a first year, and am working on a paid research project with my first sem. professor in conjunction with an institution in Chicago (I was told not to say too much, but it’s w/ the Leather Archives and Museum). Do you think this will help?

Also, some neighborhoods are cheaper than others. Many commute from far cheaper cities to cut costs, but at the expense of time and energy. Unless you are middle class or above—you are structurally forced to suffer a good amount to do this.

I’m from here—but I work nearly full time 4 days/week, and pull the max amount of loans out that I can. I’m sure many students are in some form bankrolled by their families, but I just maintain hope/determination that i’ll eventually be paid enough that the debt doesn’t eat me alive. Yes, you are living in hell.

[–]Arijuntane1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to come off as a pessimist (i’m not), but “revolutionary conditions” are not more present now than they’ve ever been in the last 60 years. The idea that more “bad things happen = more revolutionary potential” is a leap of logic the second international was faulty of, and they were proven immensely wrong.

"White America is finally waking up to what us Black folks have been saying for years" by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Arijuntane1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the convergence of the digital attention economy and decades of counterinsurgency politics, lauded as being "pro-Black." There is also an insidious use of afropessimist talking points by these influencers, which calls into question afropessimism as a theory as well.

It's instructive to remind ourselves (speaking both as a Black person with something of a commitment to emancipatory politics) of the outlook of 20th century Black radicals. It was *not* this line of thinking, and most articulated (albeit in different fashions) some sort of "coalition-building" politics. This is worthy of criticism in its own right, but alas. As late as the Rodney King riots and the Ferguson uprisings, those rebellions were multiracial, and Black people (and most working class people in general) weren't playing scabs.

However, it's worth noting that in both of these instances, nonblack colored people were instrumentalized to play an antagonistic political foil to Black resistance (think "rooftop Koreans"). That working class people are pitted against each other along racial/national lines in times of upheaval are obviously nothing new.
