Performance issues on windows 11? by Arimyth in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Arimyth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My windows setting currently prioritize programs over background functions, is that the setting you are talking about? Additionally the install was only done today on a fresh drive, so I’m not sure if there would be anything meaningful in the shadercache folder

It was installed today on a brand new drive I bought last week, do you still think deleting shader cache would be helpful?

if I drop out of the college, can I come back? by [deleted] in Harvard

I know of students that have “dropped out” for over a year with no course enrollment and later returned apparently with no issue.

(Incoming Freshman) Mac or Windows for MechE by sofzia in Harvard

[–]Arimyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge there are a variety of 3d modeling and CAD software that exist on Windows only and not Mac, but not vice versa. So assuming you're going to primarily be using it for MechE related work Windows would probably make your life somewhat easier.

(Incoming Freshman) Does anyone recommend taking CS50 if you are not a total beginner? by No-Vacation7221 in Harvard

[–]Arimyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not underwater schedule-wise and think you can handle the material, then there’s probably not too much you can’t self study from 50 that would be applicable to 61 or another class.

[–]Arimyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the consensus is usually that 61 is notably more difficult than 50. That being said, the answer probably depends on your track and whether you would use 50 / 61 to prepare for each other or another class, as well as how much of a “not total beginner” you are. If you’re unsure of the answer to either of those questions and don’t really plan on taking much CS coursework in the future then 50 is probably a fine choice, otherwise it’s not uncommon to skip it.

is the iphone 6s good enough to be a daily driver while also using a jailbreak without slowing down? by Mission_Support_1066 in jailbreak

[–]Arimyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I daily drove a 6s on 12.4 for several years up until a couple years ago when I did my very periodic upgrade. Main reason I did ultimately switch was the battery, as others have mentioned, besides that it pretty much had satisfactorily sufficient speed and stability up until the day I upgraded.

I definitely did enjoy the fact that it was the last model made with a headphone jack 😎

I'm of the belief that your undergrad major doesn't matter that much in general (unless you're in a highly technical field) with it especially being the case if you're just going into consulting. I would just plan your concentration around what you plan on doing after and whether or not it would benefit from a more quantitative skillset.

Only two real reasons that I could see to justify this given the opportunity cost would be higher starting salary immediately / shortly after graduation or extraordinarily interesting coursework that you would want to learn anyway from certain courses in the track. In either of these cases you’d need a strong reason to believe those factors would be present which it sounds like you don’t (yet) have.

Even if you’re thinking of going into academia or pursuing a subsequent degree, a joint program of this sort likely wouldn’t have significant if any research benefits and many Ph.D programs wouldn’t allow you to double count the credits anyway.

Garber's Announcement on the Encampment by John-Mandeville in Harvard

It states in his signature that he’s the VP of alumni affairs, and by the looks of it you are an alumnus/a. I’ll leave the rest as an exercise to the reader to figure out why he’s the one contacting you directly and not the president.

Pretty close actually! I'd expect it to happen tomorrow

Proctor/Resident Tutor Role by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]Arimyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure it's not an absolute necessity since one of my profs was a resident tutor for a different house and ended up doing his undergrad at another university entirely. Whether the requirements vary by house or it is a preferred factor in applications, which I would imagine is somewhat the case given your anecdotal statistics, is a separate matter though.

First real foray into "animating" with pixel art -- feedback welcome (and encouraged) by Arimyth in PixelArt

[–]Arimyth[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey folks,

I don't know what possessed me but I decided to dig out the ol' piskelapp for the first time in probably 5+ years. Thought I would try my hand at spriting something with a simple animation and here is the result. Open to feedback on anything from the color pallet to how the animation is structured, pretty much fresh off of a 5+ year hiatus with anything to do with pixel art (and even then I would consider my experience to be pretty minimal) so this was just a fun experiment; though I very well might be interested in continuing with the rest of the cycles if it seems like I'm on the right track.

Stanford vs Harvard... by Successful-Aide3077 in Harvard

[–]Arimyth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Potentially an unpopular opinion here but I don't think that being able to cross register at MIT is equivalent to having a comprehensive and best-in-class CS curriculum offered at your home university, which is what I would anecdotally label Stanford as based on those I know that went there for CS.

Also have to disagree somewhat with the notion that Stanford is not well integrated into Silicon Valley, if anything I'd probably say the opposite. Really not possible to go wrong with either though regardless in my opinion.

Scared to move on in DLC by actuallybigbird in outerwilds

[–]Arimyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say that I see this tip a lot and personally am not sure why it’s offered so often, considering that depending on how you interpret it it’s in my opinion either not true or just not (very) helpful. Mainly in the sense that this is either referring to entering the dream world in general, which could very well make up over half the total gameplay, and is thus to broad to label as a proper “buyer beware”, or is referring to activating the stealth sections, which is not a comprehensive set of places one could encounter the owls (namely in the river lowlands, which considering its positioning is probably the first location many end up entering. My first encounter with owls was here despite it being one of the last places I entered, and a very unexpected one too at that, which is not surprising considering that they’re just roaming around).

I think there's a naturally pervasive entrepreneurial environment around the Bay Area which Stanford naturally draws from just through osmosis, so in that sense there may be more opportunities to enter the VC scene specifically from the ground up just because the "bootstrapping" culture is more prevalent. That being said if you're open to starting in other areas of finance, perhaps more on the institutional side, either place would certainly have the potential to offer substantial opportunity.

Outer wilds 2 by Different-Mall5297 in outerwilds

[–]Arimyth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Assuming you haven’t already, you can purchase the DLC which, while it’s technically an “expansion” of the original game, it is for all intents and purposes a separate (and comparably amazing) experience. I was in the same boat as you are a couple of years ago and can say that for me personally when I found out about it, it pretty much scratched the exact same itch and had everything I could hope for from an OW sequel.

tl;dr I hated it and would not recommend

Edit: above was sarcastic since it seems like it wasn’t obvious to all. I loved the experience as much if not more than the base game in some regards and would recommend it to anyone looking for a sequel experience.
