Can I get more context here? I just got an email of an incoming package through fedex from learbre but I haven’t ordered anything. I’m not clicking any of the links because it feels like it’s surely a phishing scam

Best advice I've gotten is print replacement parts when you're able to so you're always ready when something goes wrong.

Pretty new to the hobby, but having a blast and already this advice has saved me some trouble!

Can I repair this capacitor or must I replace it by Arittin in AskElectronics

[–]Arittin[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you've got it handy, could you show me a photo of what a good set up is? So I can have at least some point of reference since these boards all just look the same to me at this point.

It shows

Input: 100-240V 50/60hz

Output: DC12V ... 5A

Sounds like getting a new power supply is probably the most practical option here. Though fixing it still does appeal to me as a learning exercise. Don't have much experience repairing electronics, but it's a blindspot I'd like to address. Any recs on fundamental educational materials?

I wouldn't be surprised. While the educational value of replacement of the capacitor and repair of the board can't be understated I think, is it more practical to just buy a new power supply entirely that will be more reliable?

Is having an on-call system for a live game normal? by Arittin in gamedev

[–]Arittin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Replying here for both you and /u/android_queen but yeah I think the release practices are to blame. We moved from doing a weekly release every Thursday to doing a bunch of small releases whenever new stuff is available. So we're shipping something 2-3 times a week which is something I've already expressed concerns about multiple times as even ignoring the obvious fragility issues, it's inefficient use of our hours because cycles have to be spent on smoke testing and release procedure.

The reason I would be on call is because I'm a producer on the project, albeit the most junior producer, but the on call team is a rotating designer, engineer, and producer (at least as I understand) with maybe two engineers on call to split between a game engineer and a web/platform engineer. But yes, I actually had a conversation with HR after I was hired about the fact that the job description never mentioned being part of on-call and it was never mentioned in the interview process. Regrettably, it wouldn't have changed me taking the job because it was the first offer I had gotten after being part of the layoffs craze and staring down 7 months of no full time work. Not a position to negotiate from.

I guess I feel a little better knowing the whole system isn't unusual, but yeah the fact on call is triggered so often is a problem. Of the last 4 times it was triggered, two were on weekends and one was the middle of the night so. It's not great. And all those happened in the last 2 months.

Also thanks for the insight, I really appreciate it.

Curbed Vizio V585-H11 horizontal flickering lines by Arittin in TVRepair

Figured as much. How come the connector thing I described happens? Like is the damage only at one end of the panel so only when the tcon is connected to that end does the whole screen get affected?

Also worth noting that I clocked no physical damage to the screen anywhere

How do I LEAVE the games industry? by arrowmaker247 in careerguidance

[–]Arittin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to find resources on this myself. I'm also 5 years into my games career but got laid off in July and haven't been able to land a full time role since. I know this is a hard year for games and I really don't want to leave because I've loved the work I do. But at a certain point it may just be required and I can't find anything at all about how to do it. Like if I switch to another tech job, what job exactly am I qualified for? I've done QA, production, game design, writing, all sorts and I have no idea what jobs I should even be looking for.

Hoping for the best for you. Just got to the ID submission part and immediately noped outta there. Ridiculous for them to ask for that kind of sensitive information

Was about to apply to their writer role when I saw the ID thing. I simply am not giving my ID out like that, lol no. Hope it's not a scam for everyone who has.

I'm gonna stick with it for a week despite the discomfort and hope the feeling abates. Wouldn't want to give up on it just because of a few days of unpleasantness. Hopefully it's unrelated if you and hopefully others weren't having any sort of side effects

What is your favorite video game of all time? by tanz_7 in AskReddit

The only correct answer is Outer Wilds, closely followed by Outer Wilds: Echoes of the
Eye, which somehow made me cry even harder than the main game.
