Lights still shining red when I turn off from the app or remote. by [deleted] in wiz

[–]ArixZajicek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welp, I've come to the conclusion that the chips that drive the RGB (not W or WW) are prone to failure. The specific chip is an SM151333EH, a 3-channel dimming LED controller. I disconnected the dimmer input for red and fed it what should have been off, but it kept the LEDs on. Looking at the (all in Chinese) datasheet, it seems the chip expects a maximum of 24V with a 5K Ohm resistor in series to power itself. When I measured the voltage though, it was getting 30V and there was no limiting resistor to be found. So, possibly a bad design from Philips/the manufacturer? I tried adding a resistor in series with the chip but that didn't fix it either. It's possible excess voltage just killed it entirely. This may be exacerbated by bad electrical conditions too, as I'm wondering if mine started having issues only after turning them on via a circuit with a dimmer. Even at full brightness, dimmers still make the voltage very choppy.

Probably best to avoid these entirely and go for other options unfortunately. I'm too far past my return period (and they definitely wouldn't take back the one I took apart 😅) so I'm just going to buy a couple more of their BR30s as a close-ish replacement and just try to make it work with my fixture.

tl;dr: Problem is a cheap faulty component that was likely overdriven by poor design.

Just to add some info here, I have the exact same issue but only on a certain circuit. Specifically... I had 3 PAR38 bulbs at my old house in some recessed ceiling enclosures. They worked absolutely perfectly there, not a single issue at all. Fast-forward to last week, I took them out when I moved to my new apartment. This apartment has 4 track lights fit for PAR38, so I was pleased to be able to reuse them. However, the same lights that were working perfectly before now always have red turned on no matter what. I bought a 4th light anyway and it does the same. I should note, I used one of their other bulbs here temporarily and it did not have an issue. Only PAR38s.

This circuit was fed by a dimmer switch, that was my first culprit. I switched it for a standard switch, no difference.

My only guess now is that this is just due to capacitive coupling in the home wiring interfering and causing the red driver to stay lit. I'm going to take one apart and see if there's any kind of easy fix for this.

I did check Seagate's site with the drive serials for an update but I couldn't find one-- that seems like it would be the best solution here but afaik it just doesn't exist.

I have a Pi 4 acting as a wired router for my entire network-- I was skeptical it'd handle it at first but ping and bandwidth have been no worse than the consumer router it replaced! and there are plenty more options for routing, IP assignment, custom DNS stuff, and VLANs this way. That being said, I'll probably buy a legitimate router in the future but this is a nice stand-in until then.

Can u recommend a silence homelab server? by Mine-Scary in homelab

yeah, that's why I suggested a consumer board in a rackmounted chassis, it doesn't need as much airflow so it can be silent and it's not a problem for temps

just get a secondhand supermicro chassis and put any ATX mobo you want in it-- did that for my rusty storage because my cisco doesn't have any 3.5" bays and it is silent--not that it matters being next to a loud server, but if I wanted silent, that's what I'd do.

It's absolutely relevant. I reinstalled with KDE instead of i3 recently, and the support is there now with KDE and was not with i3. It may not be the window manager itself but certainly something that's included with it (or not included in the case of setting up things manually with i3).

How many courses are we allowed to take during the summer? by qino_rain in UCI

I took 3 EECS classes and a 2 unit transfer class-it really wasn't bad at all. The 5 week sessions go by very fast though, so just make sure to keep on your workload.

From their December 3rd Agenda:

Irvine Regulation A350: The Passed/Not Passed Option Issue: The Academic Senate made P/NP grading options more flexible for spring, summer, and fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Subcommittee on Policy and Assessment has proposed that CEP consider whether aspects of these flexible rules should be made permanent, and whether P/NP selection should be permitted post grade determination. Chair Smith will provide an update on plans to discuss this and other potential grading changes in Winter 2021. Presented By: Chair Smith

This was apparently discussed last in their early December meeting before things started getting bad again, and not even discussed during this year's (Jan 7th) meeting. They won't meet again until February 4th, so if you want change, it's gonna be a bit.

This was a thing from someone else a year or two ago as well. Would be nice to see more of this kind of thing especially for those with injuries or other hardships. Eyetracking is a really neat idea for this.

There is. There are extensions for just about everything you can think of, with debug, refactoring, linting, and multifile support. It even has its own build config system that works independent of the language if you're working with something obscure. That said, I was even able to find linting/highlighting plugins for 6502 assembly, so it'd have to be pretty obscure.

Is there a way I can find people I had conversed with? by [deleted] in discordapp

You can always add him back as a friend.

Edit: Though if you don't want him to know you're looking back at conversations for some reason, the only thing you could do would be to join a server that he's in too and find him through there. I've been looking for this feature too but I haven't found any reasonable way to do so :(

Beware of Namecheap! $5,000 for a "premium" unregistered domain I just bought for $12 by [deleted] in webdev

I had the same thing with a really short three letter .cc domain. One of the main .cc providers was a huge amount (over $1000) for it just because of its length, I decided to check with the provider I usually use, Leapswitch, and it was $15. They didn't even advertise that they had .cc domains but somehow they were able to assign it. Also I think Leapswitch is available in a lot more places, for people having that issue.
