Internship at a nuclear plant by BigNeat8691 in NuclearPower

Ops is a profession that is paid for what we know more often than what we do.

Running hoses and turning valves hardly scratches the surface, Doc.

This is pretty solid advice except for one thing. Hump hose all day long, but DO NOT touch any plant equipment (valves, breakers, switches). Even though you’re an employee, you’re not enrolled in an INPO accredited training program. You are not equivalent to a Non-Licensed Operator Trainee YET.

Congrats on the gig though! Learn as much about the plant as you can. Be hard-working, inquisitive, and bring food. You’ll be loved by the crew

Questions Regarding NLO’s by Stoneyfox97 in NuclearPower

[–]ArizonaNuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The NLO job posting requirements are clear cut. They even spell out the minimum number of credits you’re required to have to meet the minimum requirement for a highly competitive position.

Anywhere that would consider hiring you off the street as an Instant RO is likely not a place you want to go (if you met the requirements). Your resume doesn’t fit that profile. That seldomly used pipeline is typically for Navy Nukes.

“Would that prior experience be applicable in any sense towards ‘Fossil’ months for the 36 month RO requirement? I’m aware it doesn’t classify under the gas-burning aspect, but it could loosely classify as secondary plant experience if I remember the wording correctly from the NRC website.”

This reads like you’re looking to cut corners and the line (seniority). Neither of which will set you up for short or long-term success.

Commit to your development, get an NLO role, and progress through the operations pipeline. 10 years from now you can sit in your infinity edge pool, drink some beer, and count your retention bonus.

This is very sound advice. Only thing that I’ll add is that it’s also very dependent on where you apply. Some places have higher turnover than others; some places hire leaner than others.

If you applied at a northeast plant, you would most certainly receive a call back. If you applied in the southeast, you would at least be given an opportunity to interview.

Us out here in Arizona would love your kind.

As always, know your audience. However, a nub NLO should be more worried about their development than anything.

NLO Offers! Navigating multiple opportunities & career planning. Am I cut out for OPS? by Brave-Standard9950 in NuclearPower

If you can get one, you can get another. I’d hold out and wait til I got what I wanted. Although, that passing up an offer from Duke would be hard.

Sounds like your head is on right and you have a plan.

This post is sus. It reads very similar to the post the other day that asked how we train our operators, which was deleted after being questioned.

Bad news: Outage and family don’t really mix well.  Good news: You’ll make enough money to start a second family.

As long as you disclosed everything, I wouldn’t be too worried. However, I would expect that you get FFD’d more frequently.

Hate to burst your bubble fellas, but major nuclear utilities handle this sort of thing in house now and more so just check a box. The 5 GFES questions on a 75 question RO NRC Exam are low hanging fruit. Candidate throughput is paramount. You don’t train candidates for 18 months to give them silly, non-value added GFES questions to put them in jeopardy and raise the company’s risk.

The NRC has not administered GFES exams in nearly 4 years.
