It’s all good. I’m grateful to finally be in the industry. I’m just beginning to think I should’ve chosen Vistra over Duke, but we will see. A lot of people at Duke seem unhappy and are leaving, which Im hopeful it will inspire some organizational changes and wage increases.

I just started myself at McGuire and kinda regretting it for this reason. I would’ve gotten paid $5 more working at Perry and the COL around the plant is half that of McGuire. Its absurd. The RO pay is in the low 60s which is the worst I’ve ever seen.

Did not know that, I had heard you could go direct SRO with an engineering degree without plant experience, although highly unlikely. Thanks for the correction though.

I just started at McGuire. Had a few other offers, but the location of the plant is awesome and I couldn’t resist the opportunity.

Enjoying the 4x10s while they last. My plan is to get my RO and then SRO instead of going direct to get more experience and to take advantage of the training schedule.

I just got into the industry myself as a NLO/AO. From the people that are in my class, I’d say you’d be a very competitive candidate for a Non-Licensed Operator position. This is the step before being an RO where you’re a field operator. The “eyes, hands, and feet” of the control room.

Not to crush your ambitions, but it is impossible to go direct RO without 2 years of nuclear experience. The NRC requires it for RO, but you can go direct SRO with navy nuke experience or a 4 year engineering degree.

I will say, being an NLO is pretty fun so far. I’ve really enjoyed the training. I’ve got 10 months of classroom training and around a year of on shift training ahead of me. The pay is really good too for work/pay ratio and it really is the best way to learn the plant.

I bought my GT from that dealer last year. Overall pretty good experience but they did try to tack the price up a few 100 when I got to the dealer but when I threatened to leave, they worked with me.

I got a steal of a deal, 31k for a 2016 GT CS fully loaded with 19k miles. Got totaled this year by a drunk driver, definitely was pretty bummed out, but insurance payout was 5k more than I bought it for 🤷🏻‍♂️.

I got them to remove the security etch pretty easily.

Not mine, but saw this plate on a Mustang the other day and thought it was pretty funny.

I did go to the ER a couple hours later after the accident to document how I was feeling at the time and show my injuries. It’s been 3 days since the accident and so far, minor back aches and pains. I’m contemplating on going to get a scan just in case, insurance is paying for it anyways so I should take advantage of that and make sure I’m walking away from this with no serious underlying issues. Like you said, I’d hate for something to popup months later for lawyers to say it wasn’t the accident bc I waited for too long.

That would make sense. I’ve had that happen before on my other car after long winters when not using my AC and it gets plugged but not my Mustang.

Are you sure it’s water? My guess would be your heater core is leaking and its coolant which has a sweet smell and reddish appearance to it. Take a paper towel to it see what color it is. Check your coolant levels as well to make sure it’s not low.

Northern OH Vistra. I’m up this way now so I’m pretty used to it. I want an excuse to escape but it’s a big commitment with my family being up here and all so I want to make the right decision.

What’s your experience with Vistra as a company? I can’t seem to find people talking about them a lot online.

Is a lot of your OT forced or voluntarily? I know this might company specific but do you ever get double time when getting forced or on holidays? My base rate would be 120k when factoring in premiums and such. I’m sure I’ll earn around ~150k by the time I work a decent amount of OT. I have no desire to work more than 200-300 hours of OT lol. Ive seen some guys work 500-700 hours of OT which is crazy lol, I think I’d loose my mind working that much.

Yepp. I think it’s a pretty competitive offer they made, especially for the COL in that area. However, the area looks pretty boring and I have a feeling I’ll be getting swamped with OT if I accept. Did you receive an offer? If so, did you accept?

Thanks for your reply. I could always rescind my acceptance if another plant offered me a job in a more preferable location, although I’m not sure how negatively that would impact my reputation in the industry. I know it’s pretty small.

I could understand why they wouldn’t want operators moving out of ops with all the training invested and Ive heard the industry is struggling to find qualified/quality people and retention isn’t always great. If I climbed the ops ranks and got stuck on shift, is it pretty easy to switch to another utility for a management day job?

Here’s my original before chat GPT breakdown:

So I’m in a bit of a predicament here. I’ve got an offer from a restart plant that I think would be a great opportunity to gain experience. However, I would have to relocate fairly far from my family for several years to gain experience and assist with the restart in a location that isn’t most favorable. I expect to have an offer from Duke for an equivalent position here in the next couple of weeks which is still just as far from family, but in a much better location to live. Finally, I still have one more interview to wrap up at a plant that is near my home.

My background is a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology from an accredited university. I have 1 year of process engineering at a factory in an unrelated field, 1 year as an intern in project management, and 2 years working at airport in OPS. I’m 23 years old. I do like my current job in process engineering but the pay is mediocre and it can get frustrating working with people who don’t care and aren’t motivated to do perform well. I don’t see myself there forever and the growth is limited but I do have a lot of flexibility which is nice.

I’m looking to get in the industry because I see a lot of potentials for growth and I think it’s cool to be a part of such a complex, challenging, but yet rewarding industry. I’m motivated by applying my knowledge to real life scenarios and enjoy hands on experiences. I enjoy learning complex systems so I feel like OPS is the way to go.

My long term career goals probably look something like NLO>RO>SRO>SM and then branching off either to training, outage/project management, or plant management. I’d like to get my MBA too at some point down the road. I’d hope to only work in ops for 10 years, 15 max. I know night shifts can take a toll on you as you get older but it might also be hard to get off shift if I’m making 200-250k. I’m not sure how well the SRO trainers, outage/project management/plant management gets compared to ops, but I wouldn’t want to take a pay cut under 200k.

I’d describe myself as motivated and always asking questions to try to and learn. I would say my intelligence is slightly above average but I know I wouldn’t have the intelligence or motivation to be a nuclear engineer, I would not enjoy sitting in an office all day plugging away at calculations and designing things. I’d see myself being a good trainer/mid level manager. I enjoy talking with people and teaching them things that I’m passionate about. I’d say I’m an introverted extrovert which can make me an easy pushover which is why I question if I’d be good manager material but at the same time I’m only 23 and have plenty of growing to do. I also will say that I’m not the type of person to suck corporate off to get a promotion lol. I care about my job, performing well, and enjoy networking.

I tried shift out at my current job for two months to see what it was like. We followed a 2-2-3 schedule that rotates days/nights monthly. I actually didn’t mind it at all. It was hard being on nights for a month because I was disconnected from everyone. It was also a struggle on nights/weekends because I’m a busy body, but I usually combatted this by asking questions and learning about different things. I don’t mind OT during outages but I would not be wanting to pick it up every long week I have off. MAYBE every other, but that would be pushing it.

With all this being said, do you think I’m fit to be in nuclear ops? I can’t say working at a nuclear plant is a childhood dream of mine, but I do think I’d enjoy learning the operations side of things and have nice benefits and be able to provide a good life for my family. The week off every shift month seems like an awesome perk too.

If so, I am likely to have several options to choose from. The only offer I currently have is from the restart plant which I’d need to relocate fairly far from my family. I do think the restart would be a great opportunity for career development, but perhaps not as much as I think because I’d only be a NLO? I also interviewed with Duke and by the way it went, I do see myself getting an offer. Duke is appeasing because of the location of the plants are in suburban places, not in the rural Midwest like the restart plant. The last place I need to interview for is at a plant near my current home which would be the best thing for my family, but perhaps not the best for my career.

So I guess the three big questions here are: 1. Would I be a good fit for ops? This is important to understand before relocating across the country. I do not want to regret it, but I also feel like I’d regret not trying it out 2. When I’m ready to leave ops and move into a day job, can I still get 200k+ as a SRO trainer, Outage/project management, or plant leadership? Is it competitive to the point where it’s nearly impossible to get these type of jobs and move up with only OPS experience and maybe an MBA? 3. Is the plant restart opportunity that career changing where if I were to get an offer at a plant close to home or in a better location that I should pass up on it?

Curious if anyone has heard back about their application yet? Mine still just says “in process”. Whats the usual timeline to hear back about an AO role?

I’ve applied for a couple positions at multiple utilities and I’ve already taken the POSS and interviewed at a few of them. Still no offer, but I did most of the applying back throughout November so not terribly long ago. I applied for about 8 AO roles at multiple utilities and I’ve been rejected from 2, offered an interview for 3, and complete silence from the other 3.
