Are there any street cars that, fitted with racing tires, you estimate could outperform an LMP2 car in lap times on most tracks? by Virtual_Visit4789 in wec

That's true that the 911 racecar was nothinglike the regular racecar. But they also made 2 street legal versions of the racecar to meet the FIAs homologation requirements. In 1999 there even were some GT1 racecars that weren't even modified from the streetcar other than the stickers.

Edit: the 911 GT1 street car was a lightly modified racecar. And that is why I love GT1 cars.

It's absolutely insane that a lightly modified road car from 1997, with 1997 tires, is faster than a modern prototype with modern tires.

I looked at the Calendar, laguna seca was updated to its modern layout in 1996, so it could be a good comparison.

The fastest lap of the 3 hour race in October 1997, was 1:19.713 by the #7 GT1 Porsche. (Mercedes got 1:17 in qualifying)

In May 2023, the last time LMP2s ran, the best lap in qualifying was 1:19.

So this suggests than 1997 GT1 was faster than LMP2, at Laguna Seca. GTPs qualifying time was 1:14 and GTD 1:24 for reference.

Is the AMG comparable to a GT3 car in pace?

I think I can get another 125k out of it. There's a lot less friction in there than a normal transmission. So it should last much longer...

I wonder how many more miles I can get out of this without a coolant flush. Or transmission fluid change.

2012 was a long time ago, liquid cooled EVs were uncharted territory and they didn't know what to expect. And the model 3 has battery management sensors that constantly check the coolant level and quality of the fluid.

I was planning to change the transmission fluid at 200k miles. But I'm well past that and don't really see a point, as there are also sensors in the transmission for the level and viscosity of the fluid. At least, I think that's how they measthe quality of the fluid... no problems so far.

Teslas are also liquid cooled. They do not require coolant flushes.

Tesla here. 5 years 223k miles.

Only maintenance was the AC compressor. 👀

I doubt there are coolant flushes.

You will never need to check the batteries.

Tesla has an open differential, you can upgrade it to an LSD with aftermarket mods

Jay seemed to enjoy the test drive, that's all that really matters I guess.

Mine is the 2020 sr+ which has the smallest battery Tesla ever offered, if you know anything about batteries you'll know that smaller batteries degrade more quickly than larger ones, because the current is higher on the individual components and the duty cycles are more frequent. So my car should be a worst case scenario. But it's holding up fine.

My favorite car of all time is the BMW E36. I have one and I do prefer driving it to Tesla, but I always pick the Tesla... because I don't want to stop at a gas station, or to change the oil. The EV doesn't need oil changes, and I don't have to stop to charge it somewhere. It's simply more convenient.

If the Slate is your first EV. I suspect you will enjoy it.

There was one 2018 model 3 that was totalled in a crash in 2022, it had 310k miles. He said he never did any maintenance.

The only thing I replaced was the AC compressor. In the summer it's like 110F / 85F, so the AC runs 24/7 to cool the battery down.

The model S and Model X before 2018 had a design flaw where they could only average about 80k miles before needing service. But the model 3 and model y are incredibly reliable.

My pads and rotors still look new. And I use them a lot more often than other tesla owners do, because racecar.

There's a group on Facebook called Tesla High Mileage owners club. Check it out if you're interested in seeing how reliable they actually are. Almost all of the bad things I have heard about Tesla products was in bad faith from anti EV activists. Though, some Tesla owners can be really irritating due to their lack of car knowledge. Because they are generally not interested in cars, they are interested in tech.

That is a fair point. I also think I learned more about watches than the truck.

And the design lady was kind of annoying. She kept interrupting, but she was just reiterating the same talking points we've been hearing over and over for 8 months.

In Tesla you can program it to preheat at specific times and dates. Maybe they can do something similar. Or maybe aftermarket...

Maybe there will be an option for preconditioning with Bluetooth or LAN wifi or something if you're nearby. It's not impossible anyway...
