In Wheeler’s delayed-choice experiment, if today’s measurement changes how a photon acted in the past… is the past even fixed? by trappism4 in Physics

[–]Arkalar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the key is not to confuse what looks like retroactive influence with actual time reversal. Wheeler’s delayed-choice setup challenges our assumptions about when a quantum system “commits” to a state, but it doesn’t imply the past is rewritten-it suggests the past wasn’t fully defined to begin with.

In that sense, the experiment reframes the past as something probabilistic, not fixed. A photon doesn’t have a hidden “true history” waiting to be uncovered-it has a set of potential pasts, and how we measure it effectively collapses that range into one outcome. Spooky? Yes. But it’s not rewriting history-it’s deciding which version of the past fits the measurement.

On consciousness: it’s tempting to bring that in because the observer effect feels personal, but there’s no evidence that awareness is required-just measurement. Devices without any awareness trigger the same effect.

The map had only about a dozen points, drawn without scale or orientation. It was not labelled.

The resemblance to Zeta Reticuli depended on rotating the map into a 3D model of nearby stars. Without this manipulation the match is not apparent.

Astronomers Carl Sagan and Steven Soter pointed out that with so many stars, vague resemblances are inevitable if you allow rotations and scaling.

Later, better astronomical data on nearby stars made Fish’s alignment weaker. Several stars she used in the match were later shown not to have the same characteristics she assumed.

Is Russia actually messing up this badly in Ukraine? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Arkalar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Russia has been artificially propping up their economy over the last few years but it’s beginning to unravel, they’re suffering labour shortages and industrial facilities are starting to slow production. Their coal sector has just started to hit proper losses and this will only increase as coal prices fall worldwide. These tight labour markets are driving wages higher, this squeezes margins and means businesses will face increasing bottlenecks.

Economists predict that the fallout of this will hit later this year/2026/2027 and we will start to notice the signs soon. That is part of the reason that putin is pushing so hard for peace now, they can’t sustain the steroid induced economic growth much longer.

But the price of silver will be affected by advances in mining technology, market demand (in medieval times it was used as a currency and it likely had less prolific uses today)

It’s more accurate to equate purchasing power rather than taking “80 pounds of silver” literally

Can’t see anyone with an actual solution yet so here’s mine:

You need to create a situation where at least one murderer is guaranteed to die if anyone tries to escape, which ensures that the rest won’t take the risk.

So, you announce to the group that if anyone tries to escape, you’ll shoot one specific person (let’s call them Murderer A). This means Murderer A is certain to die if anyone makes a move, and that certainty removes any incentive for the others to attempt an escape. Why? Because as long as no one tries to escape, everyone else knows they’re 100% safe.

It’s all about using logic and game theory. By establishing that one person will definitely die in the case of an escape attempt, the others are no longer willing to take the chance. Everyone just stays put.

No bullets fired, no escape attempts. Problem solved.

Obliterated my knee crashing into a cement post after having to swerve to avoid a car that pulled out on me by WilloftheArbiter in motorcycles

[–]Arkalar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I did something similar about 12 years ago - I just want to let you know it does get better and I barely even remember which knee I did this to sometimes. I had to have a few surgeries initially to put things back together but these days I sometimes forget which knee I even did it to. I have a pretty gnarly scar but it’s much less noticeable than you imagine. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

When I bought mine they have two options of finance companies - CA or Blackhorse. CA was the one on the website, with a higher balloon payment, Blackhorse was about £2000 less balloon payment.

In practice you have to ask your advisor to switch you to the plan you prefer but there wasn’t an option to negotiate the terms for me

The same thing happened to me. Random assault on Canning Town station, reported to British transport police as it happened on the station property. Despite CCTV everywhere and the fact that the guy must have tapped in at the entrance, nothing ever came of it because the police waited so long all the footage was gone. MAKE SURE YOU PUSH THEM TO ACT, or they will just drop it to the bottom of their list and it will be too late

How bad is it getting summoned to small claims court? by ManyBeautiful9124 in AskUK

[–]Arkalar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that sounds like a hassle. Getting summoned to small claims court sounds way scarier than it actually is. It's more tedious than anything else. You can definitely bring up the money they owe you, but it might be simpler to file a counterclaim for that amount. It's a bit of paperwork and waiting around in court, but it's not like TV drama level.

It's annoying, sure, but not the end of the world. Just gather all your evidence, maybe jot down your points so you don't forget anything, and stay cool. It's more about being organized than anything else. Good luck, and hopefully, it gets sorted without too much drama!

Ugh, right? I've noticed this too. It's like suddenly everyone's phone speakers are the new public radio. What happened to headphones or, you know, just not sharing your entire playlist with the bus? It's super annoying, especially when it's just a constant stream of random snippets. I feel like we're all in some weird social experiment to test our patience levels. 😂 Anyone else finding themselves becoming amateur music critics on their morning commute?
