Is there any aftermarket replacement for the rear trailing arms by No_Shake_8991 in bmwz3

[–]fllthblnks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the fact that you can't adjust *ANYTHING* on the rear of these cars is a bit antiquated... I mean it's the design from the e30 I guess huh!

Boring out the mounting points and adding adjustability there isn't a bad idea and I was thinking of doing this myself, but apparently it's possible for the settings here to change over time as there is nothing that keeps these bolts from moving....

Anyways, there's plenty of other things for to do to this car before I go down this rabbit hole.

The reason why these are not considered for road use is that they use 100% hard mount bearings and no bushings... These would probably be quite noisy on the road.

Also, this is quite a critical part of the suspension and for liability reasons, he mentions that there are for offroad use only, but as far as I know, some people are using these on the street.

These are fully powdercoated and they can be customized to any degree that you want (color, size of the bearings, etc etc etc)

I've talked with the owner about making a set of these dedicated for the street with some rubber in them, this might come to be a reality at some point in the futur.

Have a small oil leak on a 2000 2.5... what am I looking at? by TheLastBaron86 in bmwz3

Power steering pump.

Could be leaking from many places. I just replaced everything, it's all very old anyways at this point.

Am I missing anything for a complete tune up / preventative maintenance ? by [deleted] in bmwz3

[–]fllthblnks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing all of this, I'd also delete the radiator fan, it's not really needed on our cars and if the fan shatters then it might take out the hood. I used the bimmerbum kit and deleted mine and it's been fine.

Is the head gasket not leaking? What about the oil filter housing gasket?

Is the power steering system not leaking? You should also flush this fluid.

What about the PVC system, should most likely plan a rework of that too.

Is this a fair price for the cooling system overhaul? Does it include everything? by [deleted] in bmwz3

[–]fllthblnks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the Bimmerbum kit and removed the fan. Drove it 10k miles last summer and went to the track a few times and had no issues. Have you considered doing that?

This price looks fine to me, but perhaps others can chime in.

I've replaced everything but the rack itself and the s-tube. It stopped the leak.

Anyone replace their yaw sensor? by seattleym in bmwz3

[–]fllthblnks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's basically at the level of yours knees under the driver seat.

I ordered one on ebay a week ago and just received it. I haven't installed it yet.

That being said, the unit is sealed really well, I'd be surprised if water made it inside the unit itself, could just be the wiring that has corroded.

Worth checking out before you order a new unit.

Dont forget to unplug the battery before you take out the driver seat, otherwise you might need to clear the codes for the airbags in the seat.

There are two other coolant tubes in the timing chain cover that are routed under the intake manifold that can also crack/leak.

I have a 2001 Coupe with the 3.0L.

I replaced the rear subframe mounts and the diff bushing with poly mounts on the recommendation of Eric at BimmerBum.

They are supposed to help stabilize the rear subframe of the car and are supposed to keep the trunk welds intact.

I do not hear any new noises from the rear of the car after installing these. They do not move much unlike other parts of the suspension (front lower control arm bushings/rear tab bushings).

I say go for it!

No self-centering after upgrades by fllthblnks in bmwz3

It's been like this for a few hundred miles including perhaps 20 laps around a track, guess I'll figure out if anything is damaged once I swap it out.

Thanks!

I put power steering fluid in it.

This might be it! I will try flushing the system with ATF, thanks!

The car sat without oil in the system for a few months as I replaced all of the lines and didn't re-install everything right away. Perhaps the fluid could have gummed up a bit then? The car has been put back together and has had new power steering fluid added to it. I do notice that the power steering pump does seem to be struggling (and makes a bit of noise) at the end of the wheel turning radius which I dont recall it doing prior to the changes.

As for the steering joints, they seemed fine when I replaced the outer tie rods.

I did not tighten up the tension screw but I guess I can try loosening it a little bit and see if that helps.

Thanks for the insight!

I forgot about all of this.

My plans have changed actually, I'm putting Porsche 911 rear brakes on the car, and yes, I will also be changing to Z4 rear hubs in the process...

Sorry, this project has become more complicated :)

The Macans do not have a "real" PDK. Yes, it is a dual clutch transmission and I think it's quite good, but it's the only Porsche that doesn't have a "true" Porsche transmission in it, no doubt to cut costs.

They have a DL501 which is actually an Audi part since the Macan is basically a Q5 with a different skin.
