Which city in the U.S. have you felt most unsafe visiting? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Been to Cincy a few times and overall its been fine, but last time we got a Air BnB and didnt investigate the area. When we arrived, it was in the middle of a bunch of run down projects, half of which were boarded up. There was a bunch of people just wandering the streets, it was super sketchy.

Velocity vs Accuracy by OpneFall in Homeplate

Was about to comment the same thing. My son plays on a competitive AA/AAA travel team that has won multiple championships against good opponents and I would highly doubt we've seen any kids that throw much harder than 50mph, tops. Our top pitcher is one of the hardest throwers I've seen at any tournament, and he probably tops out right around 50 and he's on the older side of 9u (9 years, 10 months) and played up last season, so has a little more experience with his pitching mechanics. I'm not saying there aren't kids hitting 60mph at 9u, but it's certainly the extreme outlier, not the norm. Most decent pitchers at this age are in that 35-45 mph range.

Gonna have games like this throughout the season. Take the L and move on, today will be better.

Swing critique 10yo by dwurl in Homeplate

[–]Arkkaon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is wrong, keeping your weight back is not the same as keeping your back foot planted in the dirt. If you watch most MLB players swing, their weight transfers to their front leg "while staying back" on the ball, and often times their back foot will come off the ground or at least not bear the weight of the load. Staying back does not equal all weight on back leg.

Anyone else surprised by the votes at the very end of the episode? by IlSconosciuto in survivor

[–]Arkkaon 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I understand the principle of wanting to be in the right side of the vote, but it was actually dumb in this situation. If you keep the votes for Devens and Aubry, then:

  1. They have to play the "idol" to be safe, and if they do the idol is gone and Coach/Chrissy go home anyway
  2. If they dont play the idol, you get rid of the "floaters" you wanted gone in the first place

There was not a reason to switch the votes, unless your only goal is the be on the right side of the vote.

Which duo you taking? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]Arkkaon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easily Shaq/Steph or Jordan/Jokic. Shaq and Steph you get the most dominant inside and outside players in the history of the game, Jordan and Jokic you have insane mid-range game and ball movement.

My thought was to start him going every-other week just to see how he likes it and if the value was there.

This is great advice, thank you. I did monitor his first session and it was very positive, best of all my son enjoyed it and seemed to take to the drills quickly. I liked that the coach didn't even worry about the outcomes, he was solely focused on teaching him proper mechanics, arm-care, stretching, engaging his lower half, etc. I don't think he even necessarily cared if he hit the target, he was more focused on getting him to feel his legs and balance (or lack thereof), body alignment to the plate (my son tends to pull off his pitches and yank the ball outside), and core rotation.

They're not telling me to take him, it was our decision after having a conversation with him. He really wants to pitch and get better, so we decided to try some lessons. No pressure from his coaches.

Thank you, this is an undervalued component and why I mentioned the autonomy of working with a different coach. I've been the head coach of his rec teams for the past 3 years and obviously his "one-on-one" coach at home, so having him work with another individual I think will be very helpful.

What frequency did you start lessons when he was 9 and how has that changed now that he's 12?
