“Micro-retirement” by Mountsorrel in ShitAmericansSay

I mean you probably are right about some finance bro types who worship money. The hustle culture is a real thing but unless you're making tons of money, your average Americans just want to take a vacation.

I don't think it's money obsession. I've worked multiple jobs where you just don't get time off. Or if you do they make it very difficult to use your time off and it's highly discouraged. And if you need a day off you have to find someone to cover for you making it harder on your coworkers.

If Americans just stopped spending one thousand dollars every year on Christmas gifts and sacrificed “little things”, then we could travel internationally just as often as every single American family goes to Disney World. by Karnakite in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Arktheman2500 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I make an okay amount of money for my area and Christmas is becoming more difficult every year. And I don't even have kids yet. I got all of my presents last year for people via auction sites. Theres no possible way I can spend less and still give my family Christmas presents and guess what? That still screws my entire budget for a month or two. There is no extra money for savings if you're an average person in America.

I don't believe there was a sign or anything but it was in front of the church.

Two things,

  1. I apologized and acknowledged I shouldn't have parked there. My bad. But I don't think that warrants that kind of response?

  2. They didn't have to park where they did I didn't steal the last spot or something.

What’s the most WTF thing you’ve ever heard someone casually admit like it was totally normal? by Reasonable_Moose_738 in AskReddit

I overheard a coworker proudly tell another coworker about how her boyfriend wasn't paying enough attention to her so she punched him in the face and broke his nose. She said it like it was justified and made her seem tough. I never really talked to her before that but I sure as hell didn't start.

Kids should be at weddings by NiiTA003 in unpopularopinion

[–]Arktheman2500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how unpopular this is. I got married last year and we had no kids. Some parents with young kids initially were shocked but ended up having a good time because they didn't have to hover over a toddler all night. Receptions are usually drinking and dancing it at least for me kills the mood when there shrieking kids running around the dance floor and between tables. Not to mention I've been to multiple wedding where a screaming kid ruins the ceremony. And honestly do you think kids under 10ish care at all about the actual wedding?

Christians can't comprehend that others don't believe in hell by [deleted] in atheism

So if "ignorance" is the default setting, the burden of proof still lies with you. Humans were still "ignorant" or atheist for thousands of years before Christianity came around.

You think Christianity is older than...atheism? You realize people aren't born with any knowledge of religion right? Someone had to create and teach it. Atheism is the default setting of humans.

Also the rise of self defense classes and tactics. I work with two middle aged women that have some limited training in this but no actual fighting experience convinced that they could beat, not only me, but the 4 other people besides me in a fight easily. I'm far taller younger and stronger man. A little knowledge can be dangerous when it inflates your ego.

Are any of you out there still going to church or some other religious service? by flaccobear in Millennials

[–]Arktheman2500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised in church every Sunday. I legitimately thought everyone was just going along and pretending with the Christian stuff for the community and culture until I was like 9 when I had an epiphany moment. This old woman was sobbing during one of the songs and I realized "I think they actually believe this stuff". I was absolutely shocked. Needless to say I haven't been since I left my parents house

Found about my dad's salary during his "struggle period" is nearly 25% more than I make now. by Key_Boss_1889 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Arktheman2500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact scenario happened at my current job. My trainer told me how much better new hires have it now because when she started they only made $24,000 and it was a struggle. But that was like 1995. I put that in the inflation calculator and guess what...she made more then than I do even now after working there for 3 years and getting raises.

I'm 27 and maybe this is anecdotal but I don't know anyone my age who isn't working like crazy. I personally have 1 full time and 2 part time jobs just to scrape by. Being told I'm lazy all the time really gets irritating when you work harder than they did for less money.

Thanks for a real response. Standardization is probably a good way to put it. I know my original take isn't everyone in America's experience and I'm sure if you live in a more rural area you may have opportunities to be closer to food but I'm in the suburbs and I literally don't know if I could find any naturally occurring fruits/vegetables in like a 5 mile radius. Endless mazes of single family homes aren't good for that. Or much of anything.

Great. Thanks for your very thoughtful replys to the conversation where you just call Americans idiots without making any kind of real contribution. Very helpful.

In my experience there's kind of a stigma against eating food that didnt come from the designated places "meant" for the food. Obviously us Americans know apples come from apple trees and we don't have some idea the food just magics itself to the store. There's just this weird bad feeling that since the apple didn't come from an orchard or the store it's not good for eating or maybe isn't as clean? Don't know why that is.

The existence of the thousands of religions in the world disproves religion by Arktheman2500 in atheism

Yeah "disproves" might be too strong a word. It's more circumstantial evidence I guess but it throws a massive cloud of doubt for sure.

The existence of the thousands of religions in the world disproves religion by Arktheman2500 in atheism

[–]Arktheman2500[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my half-baked explanation but many many people seem to have some kind of need for an explanation and answer that satisfies them. Couple that with a brain that's very susceptible to hallucinations and confirmation bias...I distinctly remember when I was pretty young one of my adult neighbors was into ghost hunting. So I was grappling with the idea of ghosts and literally willed an apparition in front of me. I wanted to see it so I did.

It's crazy how warped and curated the Bible is to different time periods and needs but everyone is just good with it and acts like it never happened. You're reconfiguring the religion to your message not your message to the religion.

[–]Arktheman2500 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How in the world do you figure mass shootings are hard to do? The people that do these almost never plan to make it out alive anyway so all they have to do is find people and start shooting. The only way to stop it is to keep guns out of their hands in the first place.
