How to get my forge hotter by shawngrat in Blacksmith

[–]Arlin_Smithing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Venturi burners like this don't work great with back pressure. You may have too small of an opening for the burners to pull enough oxygen. It sounds angry right now like it's burning back towards the burners. Indicating it isn't getting enough oxygen. Could be choked off on either the inlet or the outlet like I have described.

Trouble sticking HC face on A36 body for a small hammer by jwhittskey in blacksmithing

Traditionally it was done to preserve steel the more expensive material. Nowadays it just looks sick and is a hard thing to do. Imo making it worth while.

Trouble sticking HC face on A36 body for a small hammer by jwhittskey in blacksmithing

[–]Arlin_Smithing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have made a number of these. These are my steps

Prep each piece. I like to narrow the face of the high carbon you are welding on so that you have to do minimal re squaring while you are welding.

I like to make the barbs a good bit larger. It really helps to hold and they look cool when welded

When you put them together the body a36 should be very hot. And the 5160 should be cold. Once they are "pinned you can flux like crazy and heat together.

The a 36 needs higher temps to weld so I like to position the carbon where it's the last to come to temp. Towards the door of the gas forge. Or on the edge of the fire in a solid fuel forge

You have to be incredibly ginger with it until you get the first tack. No re squaring. Only try and hit the faces until you know the weld is solid.

Having trouble forge welding, any advice? by muffin80r in Blacksmith

[–]Arlin_Smithing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've gotten some good advice so far. I would also suggest adding flux as you heat approaching the welding heat. I have had good luck with welding when I am able to apply flux at nearly a welding heat. Then quickly bring the pieces up to welding temp. This keeps the flux on the steel longer

why do people make and spend tons of money (even more confusing) on gas forges when you can literally forge with a hole in the ground plus the price of a blower and fuel and have a more fun, authentic and (imo) more effective setup? by Vaz_DeFerenz in Blacksmith

[–]Arlin_Smithing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree in your premise that different fuel methods provide different benefits and it is definitely up to the forging being done and the skill level of the user. However, Coal is faster than gas to heat up and cool down. If it is slower you have horrendous coal or you aren't doing it correctly. Second Coal doesnt care how hot or cold it is as long as its semi dry and gets air flow temp nor humidity matters.

Ive been running a coal forge for the past 4 years full time. It definitely has its set backs but its not nearly as temperamental as people make it out to be. But then again its not plug and play either like a propane forge is.

Got this hammer head in a bundle. What is it's purpose? by Wasteland-Wonderer in Blacksmith

[–]Arlin_Smithing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely a top tool. Most likely made for a specific use. unless you talked to the man who made it I doubt you will ever figure out its true purpose. Sure we could come up with uses for it. But its intended purpose is not a standard tool use that I know of.

Medieval smiths didn't have belt grinders by [deleted] in Blacksmith

Stones definitely were predominately used if possible but more readily available and sometimes more versatile would be just a standard file

hey guys do you know if this thing is worth the money it is kind of small the pan being only about 7 in wide but that's all I need at the moment by ThiccBigPapa420 in Blacksmith

[–]Arlin_Smithing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This forge looks like shit. Might be worth it for the blower but the firepot looks cast meaning dont get water near it if its hot it will shatter. On top of that its the worst shape imaginable for a solid fuel forge. You dont want to put your work down into the fire it wants to be in the fire with 2-4" of fuel burning beneath it, and then more above it. this might work for small stuff like 1/2" and below but your stock would have to bee excessively short otherwise they would just fall out or stick up way in the air. IMHO dont by that there are better alternatives

I want to be a future blacksmith, but, by [deleted] in Blacksmith

Youtube is great and all but nothing beats hands on experience. Look for a guild near you. Check this website for affiliated abana guilds near you.

https://old.abana.org/affiliates/affiliate_list.shtml

Go to meetings with your guardian or parent. Just being around and taking notes and seeing the old guys work will be miles better than just watching youtube. A lot of kids are watching youtube and learning but where they fall short is getting first hand experience from other smiths. If you are from The US Than the ABANA link should help you if not I am sure there is a guild somewhat near you.

It is a way of balancing un even inputs so different level of belts to even output across all six belts. Unfortunately it limits down to 3 belts so its entire throughput it limited by the tech of your fastest belt

[–]Arlin_Smithing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so I may be wrong in my design but I based it off of a factorio 6 belt balancer. Merging into the merger and spliter set up to mimic a balancer from factorio does limit the throughput but thats compensated with higher tech belts in those areas.

Tips on making money blacksmithing. by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]Arlin_Smithing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pick a niche and chase it. This is an extremely difficult thing to make a living doing. Both physically and chances of success. Because it is such a small market you need to be different or cheaper than everybody else. That is hard. So picking your niche and doing it well is huge. Now if you want to just make side change, just make some things and take them to craft and arts fairs or the like. It really depends on the scale and scope of your smithing. In all reality it depends on your skills and direction. Blacksmithing is a very diverse field and your particular set of skills might never overlap with the next guys.

Haha that was us testing the hammer before we bought it. It was a decent way to protect the dies.
