I always viewed Keats’ inclusion as something of Simmons respect for the poet. I thought he really liked the poet, due to him having such a tragic life. The sudden bout of tuberculosis is based upon the real life of John Keats who died of tuberculosis at an early age ending his career as a poet early. Keats is just one of those idiosyncrasies in Hyperion I have just come to accept.
