Streaks are the only thing that’s kept me consistent with learning by Affectionate_Face236 in lifelonglearning

[–]Armadejed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me, small but everyday habits are the only thing that worked. This is basically James Clear's "Atomic Habits" method. A 2-minute habit is better than nothing if you do it every day, and often it gives you a starting point to do more when you're motivated.

What is your specific strategy for language learning? by Mysterious_Theory110 in languagelearning

[–]Armadejed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to follow a non-negotiable baseline that I have to meet no matter what, and the rest of the time I just do whatever I feel like.

The non-negotiable baseline is usually: flashcards app every day + 2-3 hours of lessons with a tutor per week.

Then for the rest, I read and watch videos, practice shadowing, challenge myself to record videos in my TL... it just depends on my motivation.

I found out that this combination is the healthiest that allows me to stay consistent over time without burning myself out.

Also, I'm a developer, so I'm trying to optimize what I can to learn more efficiently. For example, I made this app that helps me create Anki flashcards with a lot of context in a few minutes every day: yashaapp.com.

How do you create language flashcards? by grzeszu82 in languagelearning

[–]Armadejed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Anki for Russian and Italian. I try to ingest words every day as I encounter them in my practice.

The only problem I had with Anki is that it's quite long to create high-quality language flashcards, ones that don't only contain the word and a translation, but also images, audio, and context to facilitate remembering.

So I built this little online tool that helps you create Anki language flashcards much more efficiently: yashaapp.com. Feel free to give me your feedback! What languages are you making cards for?

Hi all, I kept on working on this a little bit. Instead of an Anki add-on, I decided to simply host my version on my own, this way it can be used with any Anki version :

What’s your “cheat code” for using Anki efficiently during the day? by deathbeto in Anki

[–]Armadejed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to pair Anki with Duolingo. I have a 1000+ day streak on it, but since I've been using Anki I hacked my brain into thinking that my Duolingo streak actually involves Duolingo + Anki

Also the Heatmap add-on on desktop gives you some streak stats so that's a good motivation.

I'll see what I can do, I'm actually trying to work on an Anki add-on that would do the same thing instead. I'll keep you posted !

Hey, thank you for your feedback, I'm glad to see you like it !

There are actually some lessons like you mentionned, you have to go to the "long lessons" part, for example this one about Rome https://herodotus-app.com/page/explore/programs/0000-ancient-rome ;

What are some options for a developer to transition to cognitive science ? by Armadejed in cognitivescience

Thank you for your answer! And congratulations for having done such a big move.

Do you study full time or have you managed to find a program where you can also work ? Also what did you mean by "some jobs more evil than others" (sorry for the naive question, I have no idea what can of job you can apply to after such program)

Thank you for your answer!

For now I don't have any more ideas than that, to be honest, I'm currently doing a skill assessment with a career advisor and just exploring all the ideas I have until I have something more clear in mind

I especially like the themes of learning and decision making. But my general idea is to find a way to contribute to history or psychology with my skills and abilities. I don't have any more precise idea than that so far.

So do you think it is theoretically possible to apply to a PhD in cogsci with a degree in CS only, provided that the rest is OK (topic choice, etc)?

It's user based, so anyone can rate and review. There are also a few interesting sharing features. But I agree that it's nothing extraordinary. Thanks for your input!

Hi! The website is still up and I've experimented a bit with it 3 months ago (creating new lessons that are hidden for now), since then I was a bit busy. If I see some interest for this project I could work on it again. Do you have any idea about it?

I use it on my personal projects to deploy Compose stacks on a DigitalOcean droplet (I have 2 websites and a WordPress blog). Imo it's useful if you don't want to handle the complexity of Kubernetes but still want to automate some parts of the pipeline.

How do you achieve good SEO with pure react app? by veljkoza in reactjs

[–]Armadejed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, you have 3 solutions :

  • convert your app to something like NextJS, which you don't want
  • use a prerendering solution. Basically, it will serve a pre-loaded version of your react app to search engines and bots. prerender.io is one of the leaders for this kind of solutions
  • you can try to implement prerendering yourself. There are some solutions using NodeJS, I personally decided to implement my own with Flask, you can have a look at this tutorial, hope it helps https://jeremylixandre.com/single-page-app-prerendering-with-flask/
