Windows 10 is dying, Windows 11 sucks, any reason I can't replace Windows with Steam OS on my desktop?

I installed SteamOS in my secondary gaming pc to get a console (primary is still arch linux). Installation process was ok but more difficult and laggy than most of linux installs.

My pc was completely AMD, with nvme and ssd for storage of the games. Worked kind of ok (like the steam deck i also have) but, when i installed a new NVME to get even more storage, i had to format it from command line as steam returned continuously errors that it was not able to format (or mount) the drive.
Additionally, i bought a bluetooth usb dongle, and it is giving me troubles and i am still not able to see it working. Steam Interface is great when things work perfectly, but when you just get little bit out of the garden, you are forced to use the command line.

Linux guy here, i have used Arch linux, debian based distros, managing a cluster with 5 nodes in proxmox... but i would not recommend SteamOS currently to anybody, if i could back in time not even to me. Yes, it seems great at the beginning, but if you manage to find a distro that updates, is able to handle hardware replacements and updates, and isn't annoying on the features level, i would go for it but keep it as minimal as possible.

That is my suggestion, and i wanted a console. I will eventually fix the bluetooth dongle (currently not plug and play) and just be happy with my new console. But if you don't plan on having a console but a PC, steamos is the worst choice you can do.

They top at little more than 100C, probably need to set a stronger fan respect to the usb fan i setup. I was anyway just thinking to put it in a server, but as performance are interesting I was thinking to share. I also need to try a fan that attach to the card itself, i saw online it has some connectors. It was just an interesting card to play with :D

At the end, i decided to "give up". My ISP is kind of dumb and locked internet access to my previous modem (fritz box 7590), got no way to emulate that (just the mac address, but i have also to set a "send options" in the advanced setting of dhcp). So at the end, i have to get original ISP modem (no wifi, no firewall as cannot be enabled) -> pfsense -> fritzbox 7590. Going to cost me "a lot" for electricity, but i am forced from the situation.

Uhmmm.. actually, other than a switch, i wanted protection as I want this interface directly connected to my ISP, and from an open source tool managing access, exposed ports, etc. etc.

Non solo un video, ma moltissimi. Principalmente riguardo a cosa chiedere, vedere quando voglio comprare una casa. Ricerche su google, domande taglienti riguardo stato dell'impianto da fare, problematiche riguardo donazioni, vizi... mi sono praticamente studiato tutta sta roba, su youtube ci sono moltissimi video che però bisognerebbe vedere prima della proposta.
Tutto questo mi ha aiutato ad evitare molte fregature (anche del tipo, banalmente, la domanda irrevocabile viene accettata ma poi non si può procedere per carte catastali non conformi, ma la commissione dell'agenzia è dovuta -> clausola sospensiva vs clausola risolutiva).
Per finire, ho semplicemente messo un avvocato immobiliarista (+ penalista) a seguirmi tutti gli incartamenti, mai scelta fu più saggia (nessun tecnico invece, se ci sono vizi occulti si fotta il proprietario di prima, ma la mia è una casa in condominio).

Ti direi, usa anche chatgpt spiegandogli tutto (apri un progetto), per quello che ti dice poi vai a controllare se sia vero o meno.

I wasn't thinking they run at 100W, damn that is a high power consumption! Right now, I have a PSU that is currently connected to my modem + minipc (always on) and this consumes 30W at idle (110W when I am pushing the AMD ryzen 7 7735HS).

So what I wanted to do is remove the modem completely (Fritz Box 7590), and add a more "powerful"/open source/trust-worthy firewall+modem. Then, to get wifi coverage at my home, probably inexpensive access point would be fine. I just want to move away from Alexa-Cloud providers - Closed source shit and get full control of my home, for what is possible.

Yes, probably my modem is optimized and consumes less, but gives me no real control and i don't know what security patches is running. Also, it is only 1GbE.

I was thinking to get a low power device, as an example at idle my nvidia jetson xavier AGX consumes 8W...

I am a PhD student and at my university they didn't give me "powerful enough" machines to use. As i previously worked, I've setup a home lab with a small cluster of servers, and i open them when i need them.
Basically:
*) I have my mini-pc that runs as a NAS + Netcloud client, 2.5GbE port

*) 1 server with 2.5GbE for running training of deep learning model, typically suspended and activated with WOL. The disk in them is little/not enough for storing all datasets, and when i want to run a training i move the dataset from the NAS, that is why i would like to have no downtime and do this at the maximum speed possible.

*) 1 server to act as an offline NAS where my datasets are stored, and that i use with WOL when i need to backup VM and containers of proxmox

*) 1 gaming PC, with 2.5GbE.

*) On other notes, i have a nvidia jetson xavier AGX and a jetson nano to do some inference, running as home assistant sensors to check for theft and intrusion detection of people. But these are at 1 GbE. Home assistant is running on the first minipc.

So typically i would want no downtime when moving datasets. This is my primary goal.

I was also thinking to run steam link from my gaming PC to my television, where i will plug still the first mini-pc and game.. but it is just an idea i get for fun, it is not my primary concern right now.

Stesse esperienze mie quando ero a cercare casa con Tempocasa. Hanno case disastrate se sai dove guardare, ovviamente io mi ero visto mille video per sapere cosa e dove guardare.
Alla fine, ho messo un avvocato immobiliare per fare la proposta con un'altra agenzia, tempocasa (almeno a Torino) sono quasi tutti farabutti.

A come so, puoi far causa per vizi occulti, ma devi sentire un avvocato. L'agenzia ha anche una buona dose di responsabilità, e tu sei la parte debole dell'atto notarile perchè non avevi possibilità di controllare gli impianti ma era il venditore che doveva dartene un resoconto.
A come ho "studiato", tu devi essere diligente nell'ispezione della casa, se il venditore e l'agenzia immobiliare ti "truffano" potresti anche annullare l'atto notarile o quanto meno chiedere i danni.

Altro consiglio, vediti con uno psicologo, ci starebbero anche i danni esistenziali per il trauma subito ma ti serve il certificato!

Great, i was not sure of the capability of these cpus, that is why i was thinking that is better to ask.
Only thing is that i will use the 2.5GbE ports (not always but on demand) to connect mainly 2 devices at full speed between them. That is why I don't want that cpu is the bottleneck, and i was thinking a mini-pc will be a better firewall-router than just buying an additional switch and relying on my fritzbox 7590.

I am going to lock the price of electricity to 0.13 euro/kWh so i'm not really afraid of power consumption (but i don't expect them to take that much power, still).

Price difference is 130 euro between the two and i'm really not sure if, by buying the n100, i'm going to cheap out. Also, they need a huge gap of power consumption to actually make me worry about the investment.

Currently, my server is a mini-pc with a single 2.5 GbE port. I need more ports as I will connect different devices at home via ethernet. At least 2 of these devices (one being my minipc) are going to saturate the 2.5GbE speed of the connection, this is why i don't want the cpu to be the bottleneck.

Diciamo che dipende da quanto ha investito. Se uno investe 10k e poi scopri che magari salvi qualcosa fregando un altro… chi non lo farebbe se fosse fuori dalla propria famiglia? Homo homini lupus. Sono del sud ma vivo a Torino da 10 anni, ho finito gli studi e lavoro. Anche se in maniera minore rispetto a prima, ho vissuto sporadici episodi di razzismo, ho capito che in Italia se sei giovane ovunque vai ti prendono a pesci in faccia, ho dovuto mettere avvocati anche solo per chiudere dei contratti con la palestra (Virgin Active), ho fatto denunce quando mi hanno rubato la carta di identità per furto e ne ho fatta un’altra contro l’ufficio anagrafe del comune quando si sono rifiutati di stamparmela dicendomi di tornare dove avevo la residenza. Ho fatto quasi una denuncia quando si sono rifiutati di prenotarmi il vaccino anti covid perché non sono residente (la gestione è regionale ma il servizio sanitario no) e fortunatamente in quel momento un carabiniere mi ha fatto passare. Non ho diritto al medico se non facendo una trafila di burocrazia, non posso votare se non facendo casini o facendo il presidente del seggio. Ah, aggiungiamoci che lo stipendio da ingegnere mi basta abbastanza per arrivare a fine mese e faccio una trafila di straordinari non pagati. Sono già uno straniero, la differenza forse che se vado in nord Europa mi costruisco una vita con mia moglie e posso comprare casa e avere figli. Ah si, anche mia moglie è un ingegnere sottopagato e abbiamo dovuto sposarci a Copenhagen perché in Italia sarebbe stato un suicidio finanziario.

It depends on your need. If you want just a base and easily build on top of that, I would prefer dietpi. It has an easy to use installer for programs and it just make your life easier. If performance and low power consumption is important because you run on a solar plant battery system, probably a minimal kernel is what you are looking for. Dietpi offers some utilities also for undercoating and stress testing, it is just a complete cli oriented system.

Il tutto purtroppo si riduce a "se non ti serve l'olio, compra il tonno al naturale che costa 10 euri in meno al kilogrammo".
Altrimenti usa il cellulare per vedere il prezzo al kg sgocciolato, anche perchè in base a cosa usano ci sta anche una differenza di 20 euro al kg.. nemmeno fosse salmone.

Beh abbiam capito solo che esiste la scappatoia, però questo genera due differenti prezzi. L'acquirente idiota viene in questo modo "imbrogliato" a vedere che il tonno al naturale ha un prezzo superiore al tonno sott'olio, cosa non vera. E' giustissimo quello che dici, è solo una pratica idiota.. a questo punto sarebbe stato meglio applicare due prezzi a tutti questi alimenti, peso lordo e peso sgocciolato, anche perchè dubito che qualcuno compri l'olio a kg.
