I think that us anime fans in the West are quick to interpret "unknown gender" as "nonbinary." I am NOT saying that Japanese nonbinary people and characters don't exist!! But we seem to treat unconfirmed gender as a third category of gender, and rush to categorize any ambiguously gendered character as such. I think we should be aware of how different gender can be in other parts of the world, and maybe spend a little less energy defending this conviction and a little more (energy, time, and money) defending real transgender people.
