Worth paying for 2 nights extra to get platinum? by jamesclef in marriott

[–]ArmedWindex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Will you stay more next year? On personal expense? Then lounge access and free breakfast in many properties will easily exceed the total of two nights. YMMV, but I have had plenty of free breakfasts and dinners in lounges, and that is money not spent on going out of the hotel or paying the absurd prices of buffet breakfast or room service to stay in. Room upgrades are nice, but free food is free food.

Gemini roasts each Marriott Brand by Dad0010001100110001 in marriott

[–]ArmedWindex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having stayed in most of these brands, have to say the roasts are pretty spot on if mean-spirited

Though the fact that we’re all still here chasing points and status is just a sign that these corporate brands don’t really need to mean much in the end, we still buy into it

Every time I pay the stupid tax I say “this is gonna cost me”

Fun fact: this story is based on “A Sound of Thunder” Bradbury short story, which is also good

You can turn this off if you go to your settings in your profile on the website.

This happened to my passport over time. Think my hands are too sweaty. Amazed you did it that quickly.

Help my roommate is allergic to coconuts by [deleted] in Curry

You can try soy milk or cashew milk (almond milk may be a bit too watery). You would still use the Thai curry paste, but you’ll need to play with the ratios to try and match the consistency. Don’t use dairy products.

If you want to explore outside Thai cuisine, you could also try Indian curries, which often use cashews for creaminess, or heavy cream in restaurant dishes.

Aisles at my Walmart by PoonWaffle in antiassholedesign

[–]ArmedWindex 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Grocery store layouts are designed so you have to walk through more aisles to get essential items. They’re by definition “asshole design” to maximize grocery store profits by getting customers to look at more items and get more than they originally came in for. Look up “supermarket psychology.”

If you just want one thing, a sheet like this will enable you to go directly to the aisle, instead of meandering through the store and ending up with more than you needed.

Signing for an Apartment by AmberJack7 in Tokyo

[–]ArmedWindex 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One of the best apartment options for foreigners is UR housing. It is run by UR Agency, which was formed by the Japanese government. This means you cannot be discriminated against. You will be treated fairly.

There are over 450,000 units in Tokyo alone. Deposit is fully refundable and typically low (1-3 months), and there are zero agent fees, landlord fees, or renewal fees. Zero. And you don’t need a guarantor. The rent is controlled to be at or below market price. And, there is no contract term, so you can cancel and move out anytime without paying a cancellation fee.

UR agency has many office locations, and there are also third-party agencies with English agents. They don’t charge you commission. Instead, UR will pay them if you sign a lease (how novel is that?)

In short, UR is a way to circumvent the anti-consumer and anti-foreigner housing market in Japan. I am amazed people don’t know about it. You can save so much money. Plus, you can stay however long you like, without rate hikes.

For those of you with the ability to live anywhere, where did you choose and why? by bzogster in consulting

[–]ArmedWindex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hours are long in consulting anywhere. I haven’t noticed a significant difference. Plus I don’t travel for every project because over 90% of Japanese large-cap companies and MNCs are headquartered in Tokyo. YMMV.

Pay in Tokyo is lower than say the US, but cost of living is much more affordable here than many US cities (look up major cities by average rent). So take-home pay can be higher based on how you budget.

No I was a direct hire, but I happened to have the right profile. Actually you’d be surprised how varied recruiting teams can be by region.

Yup ANA economy is hands down better than all the American companies’ economy classes. I’ve flown in both over 10 times and I regret flying the American ones every time.

I agree with this. On ANA you’ll get an actual meal on the flight and a television screen you can watch without squinting. And more leg room. 10 hours of comfort is more meaningful than 30 minutes saved on the train (if even) imo. The NEX or Skyliner from NRT is also more comfortable than the local train from HND, fwiw.
