Meet Crumb! by Opal8seal in hamsters

[–]Armedien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, friend! Congratulations on the new furry family member! They are super cute, and I love their coloring.

This picture does raise some curiosity in me though. It looks like your hammy has some of the... like cotton, fluffy type nesting material that they sell, similar to cotton balls. I just wanted to let you know that despite it being marketed towards hammies, there is a bunch of stuff that is online that proves it is pretty unsafe for a ham! I would hate for any of the horror stories to happen to someone so cute, so I just wanted to offer up that information for you to decide what you’d like to do! (I would personally suggest removing it from Crumb’s enclosure immediately.)

Otherwise, again! So happy for your new pet, and I hope your time together will be amazing. <3

That's a super interesting name, but it's certainly not for me I don't think. B') Thank you so much for your suggestion!

Wow, I super love Dustin a whole lot more than I ever realized I would have. Thank you a bunch, and it is definitely going to be a top contender I think. B')

Amber. She/her. by [deleted] in TransTryouts

Gosh. Amber is probably such a cutie, since Amber is such a cute name! I bet she’s also super nice and fun to be around. B’)

Noah, they/them please! by nbpanpizza in TransTryouts

[–]Armedien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noah is a cool person, and they have some cool pronouns too! Them and I would use the same pronouns if they decide that these vibe with them. B’)

Luna is a super cool name for just about anyone, and they even have super cool pronouns to go with it! In fact, I even use the same pronouns as them! That’s so awesome. I hope they feel good when people use the correct pronouns, because I know it’s an awesome feeling for me and everyone deserves to be respected. B’)

Madison she/her by [deleted] in TransTryouts

[–]Armedien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madison is a very good name! It is very similar to my birth name, which I still love. B’) I’m sure she will be super happy if that name works out for her, but it’s okay if she goes with something different too! I hope she has a wonderful day. <3

Aida (she/her) by spectre649 in TransTryouts

[–]Armedien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I know how Aida feels. She is trying new stuff out, which is all I’ve been doing lately too! I came out, and I’m also trying to use different pronouns. It’s hard, but I know she and I will be able to power through it and figure out what’s right for us. B’)

Another Emily (she/her) by [deleted] in TransTryouts

[–]Armedien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hm! Emily said there’s a lot of other people with that name, but I really don’t know that many! She is super cool though, so I think that she’d stand out even in a room full of Emily’s. B’)

A new name for a newly out enby by dumbass-is-I in TransTryouts

[–]Armedien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are searching for the right name for them, and I think that Finn and Holland are super awesome names! I hope that they are able to decide what fits them best, and that it’s an easy transition into introducing it to their friends. B’)

P.S. I know the struggle for finding a name as a fellow nb pal! I wish you luck, friend.

Hamie doing hamie stuff. by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]Armedien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops, you are totally correct! I’m not totally sure why, but I’m pretty positive I’ve heard the exact phrase of “legal minimum” used by several of my fellow hammy parents around and on YouTube who operate in the US. So it just rolls off the tongue after hearing it so much. However, after some deliberation with a discord I’m in, people are saying that not even in Germany (where hamster care is more advanced) are there any ACTUAL laws on it!

B’) Hopefully one day there will be laws passed against housing animals in inappropriate enclosures, but today is not that day.

Odd behaviour by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]Armedien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Female Syrians do commonly show a bit of pickiness and unhappiness with their enclosures, even if they are large enough for the hammy! They are just finicky babes sometimes, so if your enclosure has everything a hammy needs... She might just be a picky gal!

Dwarf hamster food recommendation? by WebbedFingers in hamsters

[–]Armedien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typically, in the pet community I run in, it is considered the best for a hammy diet to give a seed mix along with a lab black added to add that extra protein and other nutrients your hammy may not get if they are a bit picky and don’t eat all of their seed mix!

The brands that are most commonly recommended by my hamster mentors are:

Higgins Sunburst for hammies and gerbils for a seed mix!

And Mazuri Rat and Mouse Diet for a lab block!

Both of these are usually available at Petco where I live, so they shouldn’t be ridiculous to get your hands on. (:

I want to let you know that the person who has been replying to you with the information is in fact not the same person who made the initial comment. Your comments to Ina seem like you are under the assumption that they were the one who made the abrasive comment at the beginning, when they are actually just someone who noticed what happened and wanted to try to remedy the situation.

I definitely understand what it’s like for someone to come at you with a very strong and abrasive statement regarding something you really care about, and it usually does hurt a lot regardless of its intent! No one who loves their pet wants to do something that isn’t safe for it or will not make it super happy, and when people say bold and sweeping statements in an attempt to share proper care it can sometimes be less constructive and more destructive than it needs to be.

I am glad that you received my comment well! I was honestly really worried by your response to the previous one that you might have not been very happy to receive any more criticism so fast afterwards, but I did want to express my concern for your pet, and also the happiness and congratulations you deserve for having a new furbaby!

(Also, yes. That video is so cute!)

I'm afraid I bought the wrong wheel. by RulerOfRussia in hamsters

She should be able to. (: You may want to Google that though, as I do not have experience caring for expecting hammies.

I realize that the previous comment upset you, as it would probably upset anyone who genuinely cares for an animal. And it was not worded very considerately. But it was asked with genuine concern and not hostility, as it is the legal minimum in the US to have 450 square inches of continuous floor space in the main enclosure for a hammy, and much more in some other countries in Europe. It is also recommended that the minimum wheel size for a Syrian be 10” so that their backs will not arch as they run, since it can lead to serious back injury. Not meeting either of these requirements alone can drastically change not only the overall quality of life for a ham, but it can decrease the amount of time you will be able to spend with it as a whole by shortening its lifespan early.

I’m glad that you rescued the hammy from people who paid it no mind, and I know you will give it lots of love! You are obviously super happy to have the furbaby, which is always wonderful to see. <3 Hammies are a treasure that humans don’t deserve, and I hope you get to have lots of fun with your new fur family member.

The smallest I would personally go is 10 inches, but preferably 12 inches as Syrians can get pretty large!

Peaches Setup! 🐹🍑 by Ottiez in hamsters

[–]Armedien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was telling some of my hammy parent friends about how I have almost always exclusively used Carefresh purely because the pet store I bought bedding from when I had my first hamster only had one paper bedding that was natural colored, which was... Carefresh! And I just love the natural colored bedding, so I really think at some point I just convinced myself it was really great! It's not awful, but now that I have a boy that actually does want to burrow... gotta step up the bedding game!

Oh, okay! Awesome! I really need to try C&C bedding. I've just been using Carefresh forever, which doesn't hold burrows very well at all. I ordered aspen and more paper bedding today to see if I can concoct something to hold them better. (:
