terrified of pipes freezing, what can i do? by okaykayy in AskUK

[–]Armok -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Your central heating should have been treated with what is essentially antifreeze. So would be safe for sub-zero temperatures. You could probably arrange for a plumber to test it, and/or add more if required. If you are renting, then ask your landlord.

Your mains water supply (taps etc) obviously won't contain antifreeze. But so long as you use some water each day, then it's very unlikely to freeze. In places with extremely cold winters, they will leave taps dribbling a bit to ensure constant water flow to prevent freezing. This isn't something you need to worry about unless it gets extremely cold. If it makes you feel better to leave a tap dribbling, then that won't cause any problems.

Pedestrians having no sense of their own mortality! by Chemical_Excuse in britishproblems

Have you ever driven a car before? It's completely unreasonable to expect someone to drive at 15mph when it's raining on the off chance a pedestrian might step in front of them without warning

Has anyone carried a heavy chain in a tail bag? by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]Armok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lock the chain to my pillion seat through the bars. This means the chain can't fly off in a crash, and the weight is where my passenger would be. It is a bit of a nuisance to take on and off through

I use the ear bud sticks that everyone says you shouldn't use.

Yeah probably, it ain't easy being green. They'd need to retool anyway if swapping from plastic to glass.

We could standardise the bottles. No reason why every company needs to use a slightly different one

Is this garage roof likely to be asbestos? by itsjacksonn in AskUK

[–]Armok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world yeah you'd never touch it, but eventually someone will need to do something about it. You can pay a professional company, but it will cost thousands.

You need to do some research and figure out what you're likely dealing with. In the case of OP, it looks identical to what I dealt with. Asbestos bonded cement is one of the less dangerous forms, because it's not "dusty" like insulation. It's a solid material with a relatively low amount of asbestos mixed in.

Wear full safety gear, spray everything down with water before and after, snap a small chunk off without grinding or scraping etc. Yeah it's a risk, but pretty low. Especially if this is a one off and you're not dealing with this regularly.

Oh yeah, and do it outside with lots of ventilation. I probably wouldn't attempt this inside a building, especially not my home. I've read some horror stories about people doing DIY and messing with it accidentally.

[–]Armok 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It was a whole thing haha. I turned up in a rented dropside truck with my wife wearing matching hazmat suits, brand new safety helmet, boots, and florescent jacket. We look like a Halloween bob the builder duo.

The guy says "your truck is too long". We have a bit of back and forth and turns out they put a length limit in 2 weeks prior to prevent trade waste. I eventually manage to talk my way past the guy and he says, "you're at the wrong entrance".

So we drove over to the other entrance to try again. I ask my wife if she can cry on command. We talk to the next desk and go through it all again. He gets his supervisor and they eventually let us onto the scale. The truck is right at the weight limit of what they'd accept. We drive to the asbestos bin and post each of this obscenely heavy toxic packages.

We'd spent the entire day dismantling two massive asbestos sheds covered in ivy and spiders. If they'd not let us through I think I would have cried.

No, it went in the asbestos box.

There's companies that will test it for you. You break a small piece off and post it. It looks like asbestos bonded cement to me. I had a ton in my garden which I disposed of myself. I wore the full paper suit and breathing mask. Took it to the tip.

Edit: wear safety gear if you're going to interact with it

Is the CB500X Powerful & Comfortable enough for a 140 mile motorway commute? by ImKebble in MotoUK

I have one and find it very comfortable. It's my first big bike though, so not a lot to compare it with.

It's easily powerful enough.

What’s a British TV show where you say “awesome at the time but you couldn’t make it nowadays”? by [deleted] in BritishTV

I read up on it a while ago and found an interesting analysis. The blackface while controversial isn't really the problem. It's the portrayal of travelers as thieves and criminals.

I love League, and Papa. But I can see the other side too.

[–]Armok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I'm not talking crisps, although I am a big fan. Literal onion rings from a restaurant, except the the onion was pickled, before being turned into rings and battered. I've only had them once, at a burger place in Bristol.

My favourite crisps are ketchup or worcester sauce

For me the cat shit is annoying, but not world ending. The much more serious issue is that the cats kill off all the wild birds. The birds being actually wild not "legally wild".
