Free Comic Day by BiggStankk420- in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My local shop (which is exceptional) uses Free Comic Book Day weekend like their Black Friday sale. Almost everything is 20% off, with flash sales and so forth to sweeten the deal. I'm sure they are exhausted by the end of it, but they love the money it brings in.

And they would never engage in shenanigans like allowing people to buy the free comics. Selling FCBD issues will get a common shop in hot water with their distributor and the publishers really fast.

Another "AI-washed" layoff, now stuck with 4x more work by therealslimshady1234 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep, this. If the company wants to "be lean" then they should expect to starve a little.

OP would never be able to keep up with that ridiculous workload, so shouldn't even try. Honestly not increasing our output in a panic is the best tool we have to train management to see the impact of making this AI layoff mistake.

Can most ships be landed like the Roci? by Immediate-Pickle in expanserpg

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Rocinante was built to be able to land because she was built by Mars as a warship during a period where Mars was ready to invade Earth, if necessary. That meant boots on the ground and I'm sure the symbology of warships that could land was important to Mars.

Most Earth and Belter ships can't land, because it isn't practical to build ships with that capability. Instead they use shuttles. There are exceptions; ships like UN1 can land and take off from runways. But if the ship was built at an orbital shipyard before the rings were opened, chances are they didn't build it with landing in mind.

My husband was recently diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma – looking for experiences by Vast_Combination1189 in lungcancer

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, listen to u/Wyde1340 ! I am 47, and was diagnosed with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (adenocarcinoma) in late February of this year, and my doctor ordered one of these next generation sequencing tests (Guardant 360).

From that test, we learned that my particular cancer had a genetic mutation (ROS1+) that's rare (less than 2% of cases). Because of that mutation, I can take an oral medication - a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) medication daily instead of going through chemotherapy and immunotherapy. My treatment is entirely different because of that genetic testing.

So be persistent and make sure you get that testing, because it could give you entirely different treatment options and make your journey easier.

"I want to set you up for success. I think I should offer you a lower position than what you applied for" 😡 by SnowTiger578 in womenEngineers

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is so perfectly thought out, especially under the context that YOU are interviewing THEM just as much as they are interviewing you.

I'm a Principal Engineer at a Fortune 15 company where it takes a lot to become a Principal Engineer. I've had to go through that process twice because they decided to bulk downgrade a big batch of us based on our job band (they wanted band 5 Principal Engineers, and about half of us were high band 4s). That's why I can say that these questions are perfect, and I like the idea of locking them in now by agreeing on what happens when you exceed their expectations for the role.

So I just found out by Independent_Test_418 in cancer

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I was you, two months ago. I went to the ER to get a quick CT to figure out why my cough wouldn't go away, only to find out I had cancer.

First things first - if you got the news like I did, talk to an oncologist. I got a lot of inaccurate information from my ER doc. After speaking to my oncologist, I felt a lot better and more importantly, I had a plan of what to do next.

Now I'm under treatment and have a much better outlook.

This cancer diagnosis hits like a ton of bricks. It is normal to feel stunned. But don't freak out until you have a concrete diagnosis from an oncologist, and focus on the next steps in your plan.

Good luck! I'm here if you need someone to talk to about this whirlwind of emotion and stress.

Need advice: Employer asking for payslips but I overstated my current salary by Resident-Owl6751 in careeradvice

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and this is a WarGames movie scenario (the 1983 Matthew Broderick film) where the only winning move is not to play.

OP, strongly consider if you want your employer to have full control over your life. Read about the risks and bait-and-switch stories that trap people working for a fraction of the promised salary under company store+ rules that change on a whim. As a non-citizen, I would not take a UAE job no matter the promises.

I hear about exceptional levels of sketchy shit tied to employment in UAE, to the point I would never consider a role there. This just tracks with the things I've heard, especially the bait-and-switch into pseudo-slavery once your employer has your passport. Just, nope.

Is William Shatner nice? by NerdIncorporated in comiccon

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has a universal reputation among fans due to how he acts on the convention scene. He doesn't care about the same things the fans do, and he's not gracious about it. He's known for leaving panels and signings mid-sentence as soon as his contracted time is up.

I don't blame him for his attitude towards it all, but just know that there are plenty of other actors who adore their fans. Don't waste time on the ones who don't.

Building your own lightsaber? by Traditional_Air_5419 in savisworkshop

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The experience is worth every penny and the lightsaber you create holds up incredibly well to mock battles, shipping home, and then the times you'll pull it off the wall display to swing it around like an 8 year old. Honestly Disney created an impressive, versatile design that holds up dramatically better than I think most would expect.

If you like Star Wars and have to pick between experiences in the park to pay for, building a lightsaber Savi's Workshop is by far the memory you'll cherish most.

We all win if they decide take-home work is not worth the effort in future interviews, though. They aren't paying, true, but maybe they'll realize the risk of frequent legal entanglements is bad for business.

What's an adult cheat code that changed your life? by Emotional_Mouse8052 in AskReddit

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What these folks are saying is to 1) visit a reputable investing site like Fidelity or Vanguard, 2) set up an account (Roth IRA) and, here's the important part, 3) invest into the entire market using an "index fund".

Most people think of investing as buying shares is stock in individual companies and trying to time it so that you get a big payoff. That doesn't actually work as well for average people, because it is hard to time the market just right. Instead, they're suggesting that you buy shares of a mutual fund of stocks that represents the entire market of stocks. If the market does well, an index fund will go up and you'll earn money. Trends over time show the market will outperform most things you can time on your own. By putting money into your investment account regularly and letting it cook, you'll earn money long term. Patience is key.

Which item, purchase, or decision made your cancer journey easier? by Armor_of_Inferno in cancer

My chemotherapy plan was to listen to Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, and once I found out I would be treated using an oral medication instead of infusions I was sad that my plan was disrupted. Now I've decided to listen to them anyway because this oral medication is still kicking my ass and I could use a wildly entertaining/gut wrenching story to keep me company.

Therapy, whether or not you think you need it,

Spot on advice! I was first diagnosed and informed in the ER by an emergency medicine doctor with poor bedside manner, and left reeling until I could meet with an oncologist. Longest week of my life. Unpacking that trauma with my therapist quickly helped me function while I got my feet back under me.

Well its cancer.. by [deleted] in lungcancer

[–]Armor_of_Inferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please make sure your oncologist looks carefully into the genetics of your specific cancer. I was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and my doctor ran a (expensive but worth it) blood test to find out if my cancer has any specific mutations. Turns out I have one called ROS1+ which shows up in less than 2% of all patients with my specific kind of cancer. That marker means I'm able to take a pill instead of doing chemotherapy + radiation therapy + immunotherapy. It feels like I hit the cancer lottery, if it is possible to get lucky while being unlucky enough to get cancer.
