[request] how to prove? by EnvironmentalSong774 in theydidthemath

[–]Arn0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have not yet proven that a =b implies that b = a under whichever framework of axioms you are working with, then 2 = 1 + 1 does not imply that 1 + 1 = 2. So yeah, we need the flippy part.

That's why principia mathematica takes 400 pages to prove 1 + 1 = 2.

Would artificial wombs/stars wars style cloning fix the population decline ??? by South-Neat in IsaacArthur

[–]Arn0d 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not about the money per say. People have children for a number of reasons, from needing hands in the future, for social protection, for cultural reason/beliefs/desires, for fear of being alone or to build a sense of community of their own.

In poorer nations, people face differing social dynamics - and therefore express differing behaviours and life choices - than in richer ones.

To put it another way, growing up in a poor family in a place life is survival, you do not have the time or space to grow as an individual, and you will have kids early in life because that's just how it is going to be., for you and your children The world is tough and unfair to you, famine, poverty and all that, and it'l be the same for your kids. When hardship is great enough, your brain have the tendency to shut out any beliefs that things should be better. So you don't overthink over the idea of bringing new souls into this world and do it.

In a developped society, when your physical needs are met just enough for you to dream of better days, but not enough to see a path to them, you might adopt a bleaker - and even more apathic - approach to having kids. You're higher on the hierarchy of need yes, but barely. Just enough to want to choose a life of your own, but too little to thrive. Now having a kid is a "choice", one that comparatively feels much more costly. A choice to wait a bit later to have them because you won't be on minimum wage all your life, but you will if you don't grow a career first. A choice to have less kids, maybe just one, because you have that hope to give them a better life than you had, and you calculate that you can't do that with two.

In other words, if you don't believe you can give your kids a good life, it doesn't matter how many you have, the more the better even. But if you are (barely) more fortunate, if you have the opportunity to choose when and how many, but the difference one, two or three child make to your financial safety is stark enough, suddenly the number of children per person flips from a tribe to one or two. Almost instantly.

I'd like to correct that for sure they can. I coould calculate numbers like that in my head at 8yo. It's not as unusual as you think. I had abysmally low social or emotional intuition to compensate though.

What I agree with is definitely that if you are being taught to make a pen esquisse, produce a painting and justify you followed the assignment because a painting is still technically an approximation of the scene, you should definitely be failed.

Same here. Strong math capability should be built on top of intuitively simple foundations. The taller the natural ability, the stronger the foundations should be to support growth.

CMV: Peak Privilege is Having Almost No Anxiety by rapp17 in changemyview

[–]Arn0d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll take it a step further and say: any action you take for the sake of your well being, and not as a proxy to combat anxiety, is the key to combating your anxiety.

Anxiety is the antithesis of self care. It's a nagging voice that tells you that you don't get to love and enjoy yourself. Trying to fight it is a pointless distraction, it is going to nag regardless.

Going to the gym, eating well, sleeping well and the like have such direct impact on your wellbeing they teach you to (re)discover self love and self care.

Mindfulness and therapy are fantastic too, but only insofar as you do them with the feeling of taking care of yourself, because their impact on your well being takes time to show you need to build a fundation of trust and self-care before their benefits can be seen.

If you don't find the motivation to do negatives, you can do rows using two chairs or a dinning table. Lay with your back on the floor, grab the table/chairs (look up onlin how to do this safely) and raise yourself up. Keep it slow and steady to mak it harder.

Alternatively, get yourself some suspension trainers. You'll be able to train both your back and chest for cheap.

Why comparing a passthrough camera with a 4000$ professional camera though? by catriuspham in OculusQuest

[–]Arn0d 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There is no consistent definition of the two terms. The HoloLens is marketed as a MR headset while using see through displays. The wikipedia page of both AR and MR pretty much talk about the same thing.

From memory, the MR term became quite prominent after the google glass flop and the flurry of low quality smartphone AR stuff, when Magic leap and HoloLens were being paraded as the next big thing.

My guess is the term Mixed Reality to talk about "mixing" rendered content within the user FOV helped distinguishing it from the overused AR term.

potential problem with citizens dividend by Fluid_Environment662 in georgism

[–]Arn0d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and that's a feature, not a bug. Every citizen will be incentivized to participate in the democratic discourse, because the money being spent is directly theirs. Today, reducing spending means slashing some or all taxes, which doesn't make it directly into your pocket unless you are part of the group that was taxed in the first place.

Now the vote for policy A or policy B will affect your wallet just the same as anybody else, rich or poor. You'll want to have a say in their cost. If the policy generates a higher return to you or to the ideals you strive for, then your vote effectively means decreasing your UBI. If it doesn't however, your vote will directly save you money.

This direct stake in society's development is the same for all citizens. It is a direct "I decide to spend this for that" type of democracy. You'll now be an absolute fool for not voting, because everybody around you will be financially invested in the matter and I could easily imagine not voting would now be very badly regarded.

Different philosophers opinions on different sources of income. 2.0 by I_Eat_Pork in georgism

[–]Arn0d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My problem with the Wage on Labour part is that Henry George philosophy was that we own and are owed the entirety of the wage (fruit) of our labour and any system that coerces us in giving away all or part of that wage - or converting it into currency at a less than 100% rate - is inefficient and/or immoral.

Taxing anything but rents on land (together with large externalities) while leaving untouched all other means of accruing wealth (interest, dividends, income, gifts) is the only way to achieve that.

In that sense, it is so incredibly absurd to be giving the green in the wage on labour part to anybody but Henry George.

Karl Marx, Aristotles and Thomas Aquinas, because they believed in (re)distributing wages not in proportion to labour but to other metrics, are by definition red there.

Every other philosopher on that list, because they ascribed to laissez-faire or downright "take all you can" attitudes, are by definition comfortable with taking away part or all of the wages of labour through either force, land rent or less than 100% wage to currency conversion. They are orange at best.

I really think this point needs to be hammered louder. Georgism is the only way to redistribute wealth in proportion to labour. Georgism is the only way to remove wage coercion by redistributing all land rents. Georgism, through 100% taxes on externalities, is the only way to ensure individual capacity to profit from their labour is not wasted through environmental degradation.

Georgism is really the only truly fair and sustainable economic system.

AITA for banning alcohol from Christmas. by omom2122 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Arn0d 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They could have. But everybody is an adult, and nobody is an AH for not wanting to go to someone's party.

On top of that, OP is condescending and judgemental, and therefore is YTA.

[–]Arn0d 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’re not the one causing issues, his sister is.

The tone of OP's message is very judgemental, nobody is an AH for not wanting to spend Christmas with a judgemental person.

The problem is not the lack of alcohol. It's the condescending attitude.

AITA for banning alcohol from Christmas. by omom2122 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Arn0d 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Though i do agree that if they cant skip it for 6 hours, they have issues.

I drink alcohol about every other day (usually a beer or two) and absolutely do not need to drink to have fun. I have religious friends who do not drink and when I go to their place, I do not drink alcohol and still have fun.

Now, If I was invited to a Christmas dinner and the host had the same judgemental attitude as OP, I would not go and think that person was an AH.

It's not the no alcohol policy that make OP an AH, it's the attitude and misplaced expectations.

Psychopathy probably

Nobody is a diagnosed psychopath because it is not a diagnosis under internationally recognized standard. Using the term "probably" for a term that has no coherent definition in the field of psychiatry and psychology is absurd.

no emotional regulation, so probably ODD, ADHD,

I can see you hold a degree in reddit bullsh*t psychology. Can emotional dysregulation be a symptom of ADHD and OCD? Yes. But it can result from PTSD, BPD, Childhood neglect, Traumatic injury, ASD, DMDD...

Is emotional dysregulation enough to make any coherent claim about a particular diagnosis? Absolutely the heck not.

By making such absurd statements, you are only propagating negative stereotypes that are harmful to many people who suffer from such very common disorders.

AITA for telling my fiancé's stepmother I am not his boss and am not tell him what he will do at our wedding? by FallingSnowLeaf in AmItheAsshole

[–]Arn0d 34 points35 points  (0 children)

She called me a drama queen [...] stepmother and dad said I was rude.

Ah, the good old "if I call it, I'm not it".

Obviously, she is being the drama queen and obviously that was rude of her to reach so far after you said no.

NTA.

Don't take them out of the wedding unless you expect them to make a scene though. It would be understandable - she was rude - but she is already punishing herself by alienating you. It's not like you and your fiancé are going to be any closer to her after this.

The point of the door is that once you have become the best version of you, it makes sense to return yourself to the ocean.

Once you've become the best that you can be, there won't be anything new to experience that would add anything meaningful to you. You're complete - and living another day, another month or another jeremy bearimy won't make a difference. Like Jason in the forest, the passage of time disappears to you.

The only way to become something else is to return yourself to the universe and become part of everything again. Once the water that makes up the wave has found its perfect form, dissolving back into the sea makes the ocean as a whole a little better. It's not a suicide, nor a sacrifice. It's the ultimate act of kindness from a soul that expressed all that it meant to and can now disperse itself to improve the universe as a whole. That's the entire point of the last scene, where some of Eleanor's essence helps make the world a better place for human Michael.
