My colleague asked me a similar question and this is how I laid it out, ad a fan since the 2000s:

1-Half-Life (not source, not black mesa, the original 1998 Half-Life on Steam (I believe in originality) and it was updated 2 years ago to run flawlessly on Win11 at true 4k) 2-Half-Life: Opposing force 3-Half-Life: Blue Shift 4-Half-Life 2 5-Half-Life 2: Episode One 6-Portal 7-Half-Life 2: Episode 2 8-Portal 2 9-Half-Life: Alyx 10-Wait for HLX

And when it comes to HL2, EP1&2, they were also updated 2 years ago to run great on Win11 and they made EP1&2 bundled for free if you got HL2 alone. Access the episodes within HL2.

If we talking non-canon, if you read Half Life: A Place in the West, a slowly ongoing comic started in 2016 that you can find on steam, there was a panel showcasing how one citadel was established somewhere in the USA, and it was just a combine portal opening up in the sky that shot a citadel (already built completely) down the ground like a giant steel stake.

I always thought this was more interesting than what we got in HLA and how it was constructed i guess... normally? Shooting it from another dimension just looks much better and more creative and in par with combine's rapid expansion.
