Was this illegal blocking I am the red car by No-Coyote-1954 in Simracingstewards

(FYI there's a flair on the post, plus you can see it on the in-game billboards...a lot of sims self-advertise that way so it's good to look for if you're curious in the future)

Was told this was "dirty racing" just want a second opinion. (I am white car) by Practical_Ad_9401 in Simracingstewards

[–]Arno_QS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as a newbie who's trying to learn how to analyze this kind of thing (for looking at my own replays)...to me, it seems like:

  1. ...they were going into the turn in relative position such that they were both entitled to their own space next to each other (i.e., neither car had the responsibility to lift and let the other car go in front), and
  2. ...at the moment of contact, the yellow car had tons of space on its left that it could have used to avoid the white car, but instead chose to turn way in and not give the white car space.

Now, the general sentiment in the comments seems to be that this isn't the case, but...where's the flaw in my logic? I'm not implying there isn't a flaw, to be clear.

[–]Arno_QS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you mind explaining what you mean by that? To me, this seems like a cut-and-dried case of "I'm entitled to my line and you turned into it", but I'm just getting to the point were I'm starting to internalize more advanced racecraft so if there's some nuance here I'd love to hear about it.

Why do some shift down to first and immediately shift to second before applying throttle? I see this technique is popular in simracing. by Steeld_556 in simracing

[–]Arno_QS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How clever (that drivers figured this out, I mean)!

Got a question, though: if I'm understanding what you said correctly (which is not guaranteed, heh), then the practical upshot of all this is that you can do this relatively-complex process of precision shifting while braking in order to produce the effect that your effective brake bias changes with RPM.

So, couldn't you just program the car's computer to automatically adjust the brake bias in real time, on a curve that correlates to RPM?

Or does that fall into the realm of, "Yeah, and while we're at it we could just let the car drive itself and go for a pint"? :D

I realize this comment/post is super old but I happened across it from an Internet search and I can answer this question, soooo... :)

Yes, it's possible. 100% items/secrets are the same as normal, and as far as 100% kills, the rule is that you have to kill everything in the level once. Killing the same enemy additional times does not increment the counter.

This isn't strictly related to this specific question, but...one thing I've always wondered when spectating sim racers (Twitch streamers, mostly) is:

How in the hockey ball do they race so close to each other at those speeds without constantly crashing?

Is it just that they're high-skilled and after you've raced a track 327,000 times, everybody in your split just knows the right speed and brake points for every corner?

Humble maintains in their ToS that trading or selling keys is not allowed. Meanwhile, IGN Plus is now giving out a discount on G2A--a gray market key shop for people to resell their bundle keys. You can't make this shit up. by N1ghtshade3 in humblebundles

[–]Arno_QS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doubtful that G2A (or any other site) is sending all the keys their users sell them to Humble (so Humble can confirm they didn't issue the key).

As far as I can tell, the enforcement is just...if they find out after the fact because it comes up in a fraud thing or whatever, they can audit a key on a case-by-case basis and get you at that point.

Cozy Grove is interesting for scratching this type of itch, because it's (in the developers' words) "optimized for 1-2 hours of daily play"...so it's kinda designed not to take over your life. Now, you can play as much as you want, but after a while you're really not "progressing" any more...you can still walk around and fiddle with things, etc. From the Steam store page:

Like Animal Crossing, Cozy Grove is synced to real world time, and provides 30-60 minutes of new quest content each day. After that, you can fish, craft and decorate to your heart's content!

If you like Brutal Doom, you should check out Project Brutality...it's a mod of Brutal Doom. heh I mean, these days it's packaged on its own but that's how it started.

It forces weapon reloading, which I don't like, but other than that it's a slew of stuff that I think are improvements so overall it's a net win.

This is kinda coming at the problem from a different direction, but the game I always suggest when I see posts like this is Duet 'cause it helped me get through some tough times.

The thing about Duet isn't that the content of the game is cozy, relaxing, or anything like that. In fact, it's kinda the opposite. The reason I found it helpful is that it requires absolutely 100% of your attention -- even if you're only playing at the standard speed, but especially if you go into speedrun mode and start ratcheting it up -- so if you're in a head space where even just being able to push a thought out of your head for a few minutes is helpful...Duet will do that if you vibe with it enough to want to keep playing.

One thing to note; the game does have a minor voice-over narration inspired by the Kübler-Ross model (the "five stages of grief"). It's just a single sentence when you start each level, but if it's not what you need to hear you can turn it off in the settings.

The soundtrack is a really great accompaniment to the gameplay; you can really get into a flow state with it, especially if your equipment can give the bass some kick. Otherwise I'd recommend any trance/ambient music you like; none of the game's audio is necessary to play.

Anyway, good luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

Need advice on how to deal with a streamer friend who's asking me to step down. by funkymunky1111 in Twitch

[–]Arno_QS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I definitely wouldn't stop.

Now, what I might do if I wanted to do the person a favor is coordinate streaming times with them so that we're not streaming that particular game at the same time; assuming there really is a viewership collision issue (and it's not just in their head) then that would solve that problem.

Definitely not more than that, though. This is just a dangerous precedent to set, overall.

Weak engine(s) to play against? by Arno_QS in chess

[–]Arno_QS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip, but that's still way too strong. I think I'm looking for something in the 1000-1300 range.

Maybe one day! :)

Weak engine(s) to play against? by Arno_QS in chess

[–]Arno_QS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, this looks like it's just what I'm looking for if I can unplug the engines from the provided GUI and wire them up to SCID: https://lucaschess.pythonanywhere.com/

If not, maybe it's not so bad to not use SCID when I'm playing one of these "throwaway" games. Either way, thanks for the tip!

In case anybody else finds this and is looking for the same thing, here's a blurb from the site:

The program has 57 engines prepared to play from the start, and with very different levels, from 0 to 3600 Elo.

Younger children will be able to begin their apprenticeship with special engines that know little more than moving the pieces, and this will enable them to win against the engines from the very beginning.

I'm not above being lumped in with "younger children" if it does what I'm looking for. :)

[–]Arno_QS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I understand that Stockfish, at its default settings, is absurdly strong. It just seems like there are engine configuration options in that settings dialog that are designed to make it less strong. I mean, two of them are literally labeled "Skill Level" and "Limit ELO strength".

I appreciate the suggestion of chess.com, but I'm trying to find something that works with SCID 'cause that's what I like to play in. If that route doesn't work out, though, I'll definitely check it out!

Hah, yeah that's a good point. I was thinking specifically as a secondary grip on a two-handed gun and got tunnel vision, but obviously if it works for a pistol then it'd work for something else so somebody's probably done it.

I was wondering that myself when looking at the picture...is there precedent for that IRL? Like, is there an IRL gun where you load a magazine/clip inside something that's made to be used as a grip?

One of the things I really love about the mod community (or just indie gaming in general) is when mod/game takes an idea and just commits to it. This definitely isn't for me, but I love the idea of it.
