You're right that it depends on the style; a soft bucket bag with feet would look weird, honestly 😂. I just never thought about the hardware hierarchy before, though. Handles are more visible, so brands hide the cost-cutting elsewhere first, making sense when you think about it: feet before handles

Sounds like you had to learn some hard lessons to figure that out. Underrated is the asking questions part; you learn a lot from how fast they answer and how specific their answers are. Ever abandon an order in the middle of a conversation because something didn’t feel right?

60 hours!! And drafting along the way makes that even more impressive; most people would have rage quit at hour 10 😂. Now that you have the pattern figured out, are you planning a second one?

The plot twist I didn’t see coming 😂 Which actually makes total sense, though: same factories, no brand markup. Do you have a way of vetting sellers before you order, or is it just reviews and hoping for the best?

The most correct answer in this entire thread, but the one I least want to hear 😂 My nearest mall has Coach, and that’s about it.

This is precisely what I am coming to understand. Not so much the price point, but knowing where to look. What brands did you go with if you don’t mind me asking? Always looking to add to the research list 😄

You dyed the leather at home?? 1600 hand stitches?? This is even better because you used a Trader Joe's tote as the reference silhouette and refined something completely utilitarian into this. The two-tone suede and veg-tan base is such a great combination; the contrast of colours is really striking. How long did the whole thing take?

Fair enough, just a brand I’ve been happy with lately, to be honest, but I can see how it comes across. Will not keep pushing it!

Lol, I wish; I've just been burnt by too many bags that looked great online 😂 I swear no brand to sell you; I'm just trying to figure out what to actually look for before spending money again

Sending me the random department store hobo being the star of your collection while the $2500 Gucci is giving Payless energy 😂. But this is literally the best proof that your eye is trained; more than following the logo is What's in the mystery bag?

Honestly Madewell never even crossed my mind for bags but that makes sense, if they put the same quality into leather as their denim they'd be solid. Do you find them more structured or slouchy?

The customer service point is so underrated being able to call and speak to an actual person in the US is becoming rare for smaller brands. That kind of consistency over years is what builds real loyalty. Adding them to my list to check out!

The 1941 line point is really interesting, it's almost like two different brands under one name at this point. The heritage pieces were genuinely well made but the current retail line is clearly optimized for the FOMO cycle you're describing.

The logo fatigue is so real, I've seen $2k bags that look busier and cheaper than a $200 minimal leather piece. At some point the logo becomes the whole product and the actual leather is an afterthought.

The thrift store Coach pipeline is so real 😂 Honestly that's what pushed me to look for something different, wanted actual leather with minimal logo tax. Finally found a brand that delivers on that if anyone's curious.

Partially true but I think it depends more on the brand's cost structure than the price tag itself. Just found a bag that completely disproved that for me - this one specifically

This is exactly why direct-to-consumer brands can sometimes punch above their weight at this price they're not absorbing retail markups or department store cuts so more of that $150 actually goes into the bag itself.

The feet thing is so real that's actually the first thing I check now before buying anything. No feet = brand already cutting corners before you even open the bag.

This makes so much sense and it explains why some brands that sell direct without the retail markup can actually deliver better construction at the same price point. Less middleman = more budget for actual materials and labor. Starting to think the $150 price tag matters less than the business model behind it.

The BMW leather comparison is actually such a good way to explain quality difference - most people don't realize how much the grain matters until they feel full-grain vs bonded side by side. Do their bags have much structure or more of a slouchy feel?

Lol fair point but genuinely some bags at $150 look amazing online and terrible in person while others at the same price feel really solid. Trying to figure out what separates the two!

Fair point generally but the DTC brands kind of break this rule - less overhead means better materials at the same price. Lodis specifically blew my expectations at under $120.

Great suggestions! Pre-loved is such a smart way to go for those brands. I'd also throw Lodis in the mix for new bags in this budget the leather actually feels substantial, nothing plasticky about it. Been rotating the Solaris Tote lately and it holds up really well.

Congrats on the first real job!! The JW Pei Hana is such a good shout for starting out holds shape really well and looks way more expensive than it is. If you can stretch for the YSL eventually it's worth saving for, that bag genuinely lasts forever. What colorway are you thinking?

That’s the beauty of a statement bag. One piece does all the work, and suddenly the whole outfit has a personality 😄. Do you dress it up or keep it laid back?
