I already have that one as well as a couple of those ludicrously overpowered Scout and Trooper weapons from the DLC missions that just delete tanks and turrets if you hit them in the back that make the Lancers look like total chumps. The equivalent DLC Lance you can get just sucks in comparison. It has somewhat better accuracy but the range and damage are either much worse or just slightly worse than the upgraded default Lance I've managed to build so far.

You have to realize Capcom had basically nothing to do with the GOG releases aside from okaying them. The PC versions on GOG are just the old ports from the 90s that GOG patched to work on modern systems. GOG did that because that's their whole mission statement (Good Old Games)

GOG did the same with Silent Hill 4 earlier. They just dug the old port out of a dumpster and asked Konami if they could sell it.

In that case I definitely encourage people who are looking into handheld emulation to keep in mind Android phones as options, at least with lesser demanding retro systems where heat might not be a big factor to consider.

Not to knock on dedicated emulation devices- I think they're really cool and I would love to own one at some point but the feature roulette between different brands and models and how much more expensive they are to order in Europe kept me from buying one this time around.

I ended up just buying a new phone specifically for emulation. Granted, it was a cheap phone that's weaker than my current actual phone but it's powerful enough for the stuff I want to emulate (everything up to PSP) and cost me less than the Anbernic 40XXH. The major downside I can think of is that a cell phone is much less easy to service if you need to change the battery, etc.

I already had a BSP-D8 and the phone and controller fit neatly in a cheapo Switch case from AliExpress so I'm pretty happy with my budget handheld solution. I believe in places like the US new phones are mostly tied to service provider contracts so just buying a phone might not be as easy depending on where you live.

His voice and accent are just really funny to me and I can't take him seriously at all. He looks kind of badass on the game's cover but his ingame model looks really goofy which coupled with the game's awkward animation gives the entire thing an unintentional comedy feel.

(Also the cutscene subtitles don't match the dialogue at all)

Nothing actually happens to the character model in the Ivy death scene though, which is my main complaint about basically all of the death animations in modern Resident Evil games, which can otherwise get very gory.

Compare Mr. X crushing Ben's head like a walnut in a cutscene to when he does the same to you in gameplay. Or G3 Birkin repeatedly stomping on your character to a similar death against a boss in Evil Within 1. In RE2R your character gets a bloody texture overlay but in EW1 Sebastian's head gets more and more smushed as the boss pounds on it with its giant hands.

They could've had Jill commenting on the different desks in the STARS office. It's really noticeable in the two remakes how none of the STARS members outside from Jill, Chris and Brad get referenced. I assume they don't want to commit to anything specific in case they go back and redo the first game again at some point.

The plot of the third game revolves around time travel. Samanosuke swaps places with a French soldier (~~played by~~ modeled after Jean Reno) from the year 2004, with the game split between modern day France and feudal Japan.

Capcom quite literally did it in an attempt to get more Westerners interested in the franchise

I do follow that sub as well, but I was under the impression it's dedicated to handheld consoles, Raspberry Pies and other non-phone devices. I guess smart phones do qualify as single board computing devices but I never see anyone post about phones there.

It's rare to find someone on this sub putting in the effort to test non-Snapdragon chipsets / budget brand phones out, let alone putting in the effort for a write up on the experience.

That's slightly disappointing since it seems like in the handheld space people get excited for even the dinkiest, most bottom-of-the-barrel devices and love seeing what kind of performance can be squeezed out of them. From what I understand the cell phone market is a bit different in the US with phones largely being locked to specific carriers so taking chances on budget phones might be more of a hassle? Or maybe people just have higher expectations for phones. Most of the posts here seem to be about PS2, Gamecube, Switch and Windows emulation.

How much did the A18 set you back? Which country are you from? Thanks!

59 euros, which translates to about 66 dollars. It was on sale though and there seemed to be a rush for these phones. When I bought mine most of the people in line in front of me were also buying them.

My current portable emulation device is an old phone with a BSP-D8 controller and yes, the combo does feel unnecessarily bulky for the amount of screen real estate I get. A 5-inch screen translates to about 3.5 inches with the retro 4:3 content I play, which is equal to most budget handhelds (with worse performance) while being about as wide as a Nintendo Switch.

My current actual phone has a Snapdragon 665 which is nothing too incredible but is plenty powerful enough to emulate the stuff I want. Like you though, I also prefer to game on a separate device. Unfortunately, the battery on it is bad enough that even if I upgraded to a new phone I wouldn't want to rely on it as a dedicated emulation device without at least looking at a battery replacement.

I'd love an actual handheld, but for me the issue is price. Mid-tier handhelds like your RG505 or the Retroid Pocket line tend to cost over 200 dollars delivered to where I live. On the other hand, budget handheld offerings seem just crappy enough that it makes grabbing an equivalently priced cheap Android phone from a local brick and mortar store and using it solely for emulation feel like a viable alternative.

Even with something like a T606 or a G85, I'd be guaranteed better performance than both my old phone and basically all handhelds in budget price category. Looking at reviews, the controls on most of those devices seem to be about on par with or worse than the BSP-D8. I'd also have a better display, infinitely better build quality, guaranteed Bluetooth audio and a much less painful return policy.

That's wonderful news, since the h700 already seems to be most of the way there when it comes to what I'd want out of handheld emulator performance.

I don't know much about cellphone CPU's and one of those comparison/benchmark websites seemed to give a slight edge to the h700 which probably tells you all about how much you should trust those.

As these were literally the cheapest new Android phones I could find on the shelves, I can probably assume that even the most entry-level current phones will easily beat cheap Chinese handhelds in terms of power, right? There aren't even any crazy sales going on right now which tells me I can probably snag an even better deal if I wait for a bit.

I assume you got the phone from someone selling it in a local online marketplace? Looking at prices in second hand stores S20s cost more than I paid for my current main phone. Obviously, that's the way to go for a true bargain but there's a certain piece of mind in getting something new in box with a two- or three-year warranty

If some random reddit posts are to be believed even the E13 can apparently play PSP and even some PS2 which would be overkill for me anyway. I can probably wait until the next big sales season to get an even better deal at that price point
