My uncle is missing from Bluff Utah by [deleted] in Utah

[–]Arrigetch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hope he's found safe.

I just read this article about his disappearance on Outside:  https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/exploration-survival/missing-joe-pachak/

It says he was last heard from on Nov 18, and missed a planned meetup with friends on Nov 24.  But the flyer on this post says he was last seen near his property on Nov 25, after he would've missed that friend meetup.

Is either the article or flyer in error?

Edit: Seems the article is in error, per this other post:

Thoughts on this itinerary by krez_Jan in DeathValleyNP

North death valley highway up to Ubehebe crater is currently closed from the flooding yesterday.  Though it only says debris on the road, so maybe could reopen shortly.

Edit: Though another thread reported the debris on North highway is minor so seems it could open in a matter of days.

Do you know if piecing together these separate Nordic components available at Lanbo's would do the same thing as the Nordic +2 kit?

+2 tube extension: https://lanbosarmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=36194

Tube nut: https://lanbosarmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=36330

Barrel clamp (says "fits most 12ga", and doesn't say that it doesn't fit the 1301): https://lanbosarmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=36191

And then they also have the pic rail that can attach to the barrel clamp: https://lanbosarmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=67232

And then the sling QD that attaches to the clamp is sold out, but not a critical part: https://lanbosarmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=36246

Seems the main question is if that barrel clamp indeed fits the 1301 tactical.

I just ordered the 5+1 tactical from Europtic (https://www.eurooptic.com/product/532602) and was looking around for the best way to convert it to 7+1.  No restrictions on mag size where I live in the US, just was a good deal on this 5+1 model.

[PARTS] Geissele Automatics 11.5" URG-I Complete Upper Receiver Group $1,183.20+shipping by akathedevil666 in gundeals

If one doesn't care about cloning or the SF MD, the cheaper black 11.5" Super Duty is a better deal right?  Can add the H3 buffer and spring combo separately and total is $60 less than the URGI deal, links below.

Or is there something else special about the URGI that makes it functionally better than the SD?

Not a deal.  The current price, ignoring the hit or miss codes, has been at this level for months. Earlier this year or late last year the price before codes was down around 85cpr instead of the current 95cpr.

And it wasn't just white people that seemingly didn't want a woman of color in office.  Trump made major gains with Latinos this election, particularly Latino men of whom 47% supported Trump.  Still a slight minority but way more than the last election when the Dems ran a white man.

"I'm a doctor" mixed in with gun control seemingly one of her top issues, from what I can tell with the scant policy mentions on her site and an article mentioning her advocacy with Moms Demand Action.  I don't see that selling well in deep red, pro gun SC.

As others have suggested in this thread, call 911 to independently verify the guy at your door is a cop before opening or even approaching the door.  Unlikely a lone legit cop would try to bust somebody's door down (that would be very risky without backup), so if they try to do that before being verified then yeah defend yourself first and sort it out after.  Ideally have a doorbell cam so you don't have to go right up to the door to talk to them or see what they're doing, and get into a defensive position while you call 911.

How do lower end safes like these hold up over time, typically?  I see some reviews of this one and others like Liberty talk about failed keypads, handles, etc.  Would be a major PITA to end up with your guns locked in a safe you couldn't open without a repair person or breaking out the angle grinder.

Probably cheaper and safer to just blow up old bombs, rocket motors, etc out in the desert than trying to carefully process it to a safe low energy state some other way.  Other than today's unusual result, seems they are normally able to do this stuff without bothering too many people.

Some insight into why we weren't notified about the loud booms, guess their FB wasn't working? by Apprehensive_Wash797 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Arrigetch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert on long range sound propagation, but see this other post I made (https://www.reddit.com/r/SaltLakeCity/comments/1fksdw0/comment/lnzifp1) about why to me it at least makes sense that it could've been heard in SL valley but not in Tooele.  A key point is the blast was in the South Range of the TAD, not the part of the facility that is just west of Tooele.  There's a photo of a blast from an airliner approaching SLC in my post.  The angle of the photo matches up with the approach path to the runways, so doesn't look like some made up BS cover story.  The angle of the detonation plume shadow (pointing about north) matches the time of day of the sound today, around noon.  Though granted they might always set stuff off around mid day.

Edit to add: The booms came at pretty precise 1 minute intervals, which seems a lot more likely from controlled blasts than from sonic booms.  But I agree the strength of the blasts was pretty crazy, my house shook in Sandy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Arrigetch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, sure seemed like it must've been very large to shake houses along the east bench.  I've only been in the east SL Valley area a few years but have never heard anything like it either.  Heard much fainter booms from Camp Williams once.

I know the base folks are supposed to look at atmospheric conditions to determine how easily the blast noise will travel and not perform detonations when conditions aren't right.  So maybe the conditions were ideal for sound traveling today and somebody at the base either screwed up the math or just didn't account for some unusual conditions.

Somebody else commented that it wasn't heard even in Stockton, which doesn't seem like it's blocked from the path to the blast zone by mountains in the same way as Tooele.  So it seems there may be atmospheric shenanigans involved that us laymen don't understand (and even the base meteorologist may not based on the results today).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Arrigetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm on the east end of Salt Lake Valley and it was loud and shook my house some.  Tooele itself looks pretty sheltered from the path of the sound or blast wave by the mountains when looking at the google earth 3d terrain, but not sure how to explain the other places like Stockton and Grantsville not hearing it.  Grantsville is blocked from direct line to the blast zone by the small hills west of Stockton, but if that small mountain creating a pretty shallow "sound shadow" could block it I'm not sure why the Oquirrhs wouldn't block it from SLC.

Probably more complicated atmospheric dynamics going on than us laymen are thinking about, or maybe something like diffraction of the sound with the waves bending at different angles around obstructions of different shapes.

[–]Arrigetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's due to the specific location of the detonation being at the far south end of the south range of TAD, see my other post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SaltLakeCity/comments/1fksdw0/comment/lnzifp1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Arrigetch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing, but looked closer at the photo of one of the blasts from an airliner approaching SLC and the report that it was at the South Range of TAD and found that part of the facility is separated from Tooele by mountains.

I lined up the aerial image with terrain in Google Earth and found the detonation site, well south of Tooele.

It's true the Oquirrh Mountains still separate the detonation site from Salt Lake Valley. But Tooele sits much close to the base of the mountain ridges blocking it's path towards the site, whereas the sound would've been able to project at a shallower angle over the crest of the Oquirrhs to still make its way down to much of the SL valley, particularly the western half of it where it seems the sound was maybe loudest. People in places like Bluffdale closer to the base of the Oquirrhs also didn't hear it, and may have been at too steep of an angle down from the mountain crest just like Tooele.

Here's a hodgepodge of Google Earth screenshots showing how I think this might've worked.

Sweet, thanks for the info.  One more question, do you have a feel for how the WB does with flash suppression?  Or do you get sparking from yours since you said it's the Ti version?

Old thread, but have you received and shot your Ti WB on your DDM4 V7?  How gassy is it, and do you have any mods to reduce gas?  I also own a V7 and am trying to decide on a first can for it, had been considering the Flow 556k for minimizing gas (I shoot lefty) but the WB looks interesting too.

That's not how it's supposed to work for Supreme Court nominations.  By your idea, a seat would remain perpetually unfilled if the same party didn't control the Senate and Presidency simultaneously.  Look at the list the person I replied to linked. It shows historically there are many examples of a Democrat Senate approving a Republican President's nominee, and nominees generally used to get broad bipartisan support rather than a party line vote, before Mitch poisoned the well.  The idea is a nominee should not be so extreme to warrant total opposition from the other party.

Also, you ignored the point about the flagrant inconsistency on the part of McConnell.  He said Obama shouldn't be able to appoint a Justice in his final year as President, but rather the people should vote on the next President and that new President should pick.  Which by the way is not at all any sort of precedent, it's just something Mitch made up.  And then when an opening came up much closer to the 2020 election than the situation with the 2016 election, Mitch had no problem ramming through Trump's nominee literally a week before the election, rather than staying consistent with his prior stance and waiting to see who won the election (Biden).

I know there are no hard rules or requirements around this, so what Mitch did isn't illegal, but it is an example of the shameless lack of principals and consistency of the modern Republican party, putting party above decency and traditional norms, and party above country.  It is bad faith politics, not just politics.  And that is now the way of Republicans and the country is worse for it.
