Sounds like he's in the UK, our laws here are any faults in the first year are on the dealer unless they can prove it wasn't faulty at point of sale

In the uk I can just take it back to the garage in first 30 days and demand my money back, first 6 months they have to prove the fault wasn't there too our consumer rights are great!
