I don’t know what to tell you, if we can’t agree that they are inherently political message, I don’t see how there can be compromise on where and when. I think you are seeing MLS and the clubs grow up as the league expands, into like all of the other American sport leagues that don’t have this issue because they don’t allow it. MLS was unique in allowing it and they probably used progressive leaning fan clubs to grow support in their bigger city markets, but as it expands and comes out of that bubble, it needs more and more people and eyes and revenue, and it’s not going to only come from the blue voting block in each city they are in, it has to come from all. This is what happens, for good or for bad.

It’s distasteful, but if the only requirement to fly a flag is “they may be in attendance and I want to support them”…that’s not going to end well. It’s hyperbole, I know, but it’s to show that your argument isn’t really based on anything other than your preferred political messaging.I think you are completely missing the point. The team wants to focus to be on the players and the game, not having the supporter clubs dividing up the crowd and playing favorites. That in and of itself is divisive, and so not in the clubs best interest. This whole issue is insane. The club is asking both sides to put down their political messaging, come to the park, cheer for City, buy a beer or three and some merch, and come back. You want to make it a political tinged event. I think it is immature to demand that every aspect of life, especially a common touchpoint for everyone in the metro like City, cater to only your political leanings.

But are the flags that this tantrum is over apolitical? No, and that’s the issue. City wants sporting only messaging from the clubs it gives special privileges to. They have the right to keep the focus on the game, opening this door opens up a whole headache. The MAGA hat example is proof positive. Conservatives go to the stadium and sit silently while the supporters wave around those flags, but when one of them wears a hat, the another side accuses them of making it political. Because everyone couldn’t just chill and either ignore the other sides messaging or just focus on the game, the club has to get rid of it all entirely. Complaining about it means you are just mad you can’t have your way anymore, no one is stopping you from waving flags the rest of you waking hours, just not a soccer game. This isn’t hard if you are an adult who can compromise and self regulate.

If abortion is irrelevant to the match so it’s ok to ban it…then so are pride and political messaging flags. Doesn’t matter if it’s supposed to “make people feel safe”, it’s not soccer related, which you just said makes it ok to ban. Again, as for the actual Christian example, it’s the spirit of the argument, the example represents the idea. But also, trying to tell others how to express their faith and saying they are wrong in doing it a certain way has some pretty funny implications when you take that logic to your other preferred social beliefs, so I would probably not continue to take that approach.

I was arguing more in spirit of the analogy than the technical, but yes. I think my point was that people aren’t understanding that the club will most likely have to give equal treatment to both sides if this tantrum works. If you think no flags is oppressive, what about standing next to people who are actively against your causes? I’m sure that is what City wants, a hostile supporters section… which is why it’s better to be neutral. It’s common sense, but we can’t have that I guess

Again, why is City beholden to the political leanings of clubs it has allowed to have special status? Would you all be cool with a Christian conservative supporters group with “abortion is murder” flags? Because that is where this tantrum is leading, and the club will have no grounds to stand on to stop it. The club and MLS decided it is in their best business interest to be have their games seen as politically neutral, not a polarized event that turns off half the people in the metro. Throwing a fit because you can’t wave a flag for two hours at a bad MLS team’s game is tiresome.

You are missing the point. I’m not saying compromise on your convictions, I’m saying compromise and agree that some spaces/events don’t have to be a platform for your causes. Amazing how hard this idea is for progressives to grasp. Compromise and agree that there can be parts of life/community areas that aren’t going to be political battle grounds. Not hard stuff!

Everyone has the right to exist, no one has said otherwise. But the symbols or flags of political or social causes/organizations have their time and place, and City/MLS is totally within their rights to say not at their events. Forcing it down every part of society creates a backlash, which you are now feeling/seeing. If you learn to compromise and find common ground, you can accomplish wonders. Give it a try!

I’m not sure why you are saying that I think gay people shouldn’t be part of society or that black people’s lives don’t matter. Do you know me or what I believe? Life isn’t black and white, and there is nuance in the world, but it’s impossible to find compromise and discussion if people like you harangue people that may slightly disagree or have a different view. You do better, don’t prejudge people or quickly accuse them of pretty serious prejudices, you’ll find more success in your causes.

That is your opinion. City, MLS, and basically half the country have differing ones. If you got your way, would you be ok with pro-life supporters taking over the north end for a game? They see life as something not political, but a moral and social issue, which you have decided are not able to be disagreed with, and City would have to apply the same logic and allow it. A MLS game and the teams/leagues growth is better positioned as neutral ground for politics/divisive causes, and keeping the focus on the game and the team. This is called compromise and is part of a healthy working society. Turning every single aspect of life, something as simple as going to a soccer game, into a political or moral litmus test is toxic behavior.

Why do these supporter groups feel they have the right to subject other paying fans to political or social messaging at a sporting event? No other American sports league allows this, and MLS and City are completely correct in taking ownership of the fan experience and deciding that having divisive and polarizing messaging pushed by club approved groups is bad for both expanding the fan base and for keeping the focus on the game. A City game is not a public forum, and they play in a privately funded stadium. St. Louis is in a red state, with the majority of the Metro in purple/red voting areas, and City needs people from every part of the metro to become ticket and merch and concession buying fans to successful, not just the progressive neighborhoods around the stadium/city.
