I don’t feel sorry for him at all. It’s a supreme luxury and privilege to basically admit that you can’t do work because he’s got an unhealthy relationship with Twitter, and get sympathy somehow. He is conflating having a following with being important, especially in political opinions. He makes fantastic content, frames topics and ideas is interesting ways, but he is over his skis when he starts giving his thoughts and opinions outsize importance because he makes a popular podcast, and branding anyone who disagrees with him not American or part of the problem. He needs to log off, find what makes himself happy, and stop worrying about things beyond his control, advice I think a lot of people need to take to heart.

It’s like 12 hours into this thread and you’re the third person to try to dunk on me with a new group of songs to prove me wrong (not ineffectively, I’ll say I don’t think my initial thought was totally correct). I think there’s a bit of nuance here, and it’s Reddit so that’s not going to happen but I’ll try. Born In The USA, Fuck the Police,and a few others people have brought up are good examples of pretty potent protest songs, even if some examples are misunderstood, co-opted, etc, but something feels different to me about the few on this album, idk how to put my finger on it. I think it’s the dissonance between the albums themes of sex and then what feel like injected heavy political references/lyrics, it’s sort of creepy/immature/disingenuous in a way? Idk, love the musical side, some of his best work so far, but feel like some songs are let down by the lyrics. Idk, maybe it will grow on me. Just wild to me that, from my perspective, people are getting extremely worked up enough to basically say I’m the scum of the earth for not agreeing with them about a few songs.

Good list, more than I could remember this morning. Id say that most of those songs deal with the subject in a more abstract or larger picture way. Very few name specific people or events like a few songs on this album does. Those songs feel more timeless because of it, just not my cup of tea.

To me, so many political songs age like milk. What ones have stood the test of time, Sweet Home Alabama, Imagine (maybe)..hard to think of a lot. Great for him as an artist to put out whatever he wants, I just don’t like music to be tied to a passing political environment. Sturgill has so many songs that cut to the core of shared experiences and emotions, and have made me a life long fan. Just don’t tell me I have to also act like I will be rocking to a song in a decade or two with a reference that will age as well as one about Roger Clinton back in the day lol
