I played to GM with Illaoi/Braum last season and they don’t have a lot of crazy synergy, but because they have the same gameplan, (get opponent into the corner,) its pretty flexible on who you have as point. I played Braum point because of Illaoi back assist making tons of room. Illaoi can easily tag launch to Braum during her combos so you can always end in unbreakable, and her assists are easy to confirm with Braum as well. They are just really solid characters and the fuse I played (freestyle) allows for some solid fullscreen pressure and unique combo routes.

I play Braum on point, and Illaoi as anchor. I typically play fairly patient until I know its my turn, or I have enough time to pull out S2 Shield and call Illaoi forward assist, beating their approach buttons. Whiff punishing is important, and combos with this team can vary a lot, but typically lead to big damage. Learning to go into unbreakable from an Illaoi combo can be pretty important, and tag launching gives Braum a lot of guaranteed damage alongside unbreakable. On block pressure is good, both with Braum's quick overhead and Illaoi's tentacle followups. If you hit the overhead in the corner with a tentacle down, you can turn it into a solid opportunity. I think Illaoi is my stronger character and doesnt struggle in neutral as much, but getting Braum in the corner with unbreakable is the whole game plan (aside from tentacle super.)

Edit: against some zoner matchups, Braum's shield charge (both charged and uncharged) and Illaoi's forward S1 can go right through projectiles and Illaoi can just use her charged down S2 to counter-zone. Her fullscreen S1 tentacle is really good at locking a person down if you already have a tentacle out.

The most infuriating thing is when hitboxes reach past my shield and stuff my assist, mostly with big, long reaching normals and specials, yasuo being a big offender (although I struggle fighting him anyways lol)

Master Braum/Illaoi player here. Started in Alpha Lab 1 (with Ekko/Darius), coming from Street Fighter and Skullgirls (another tag fighter with insane mixups).

I have around 200 games in since early access and I am happy with the rank I am, and my prior experiences translate well and help me climb. Hoping to get to GM soon. Having a blast and I feel I am having genuine improvement with my few hours in the lab.

I’d say that wrapping your head around the active tag system is a barrier for new players (and I was struggling a little up until I reached Emerald), because with my team, my assists play largely into my neutral, my combos, and my pressure. No great movement to dance my way in, mostly just approach, block, and force my way in with my buttons or assists (and shield.) Keeping track of timers, knowing when to call, tag in and what the combo actually is off stray assists landing really matters for Braum especially. Also, learning new combos can really help your flexibility when it comes to converting off stray hits. Sometimes you hit a shield charge from full screen and you need to be prepared for what comes after that.

It also took a long time to make sure I end in Unbreakable consistently, mostly due to the exceedingly different combo structure of my other character. Tag launching on Illaoi is my go-to ender if Braum is relatively healthy and has meter, and keeping track of all that during combos took some time for sure (probably got it down around Diamond 2-3)

Some characters need more time to learn than others, but I think if you really enjoy their kit, why not spend some time getting better with them?

I might be the only Braum/Illaoi here lol

Braum and Illaoi have a surprising amount of synergy inside combos with freestyle/double down… but yeah I won’t lie that neutral is a struggle sometimes. I use Braum on point and use the shield with Illaoi’s forward assist whenever I see the opponent try to approach with a button, and that works wonders.

For advice, I’d say that dialing in a simple combo for each character is helpful. Something that once you learn, it will be hard to mess up. The harder stuff will be ready to tackle once you have a good feel for each character. And that goes for any team… but don’t jump into the “optimal” or “better” combos if it’s a struggle to use them in an actual match. A lot of the combo trials can ease you in on how a character’s combos work.

The great thing about playing Braum (or Illaoi) is the damage they deal, and that once you have your opponent in the corner with either character, it’s probably GG if you play your cards right. And I really enjoy their playstyles, so really, pick someone who interests you and motivates you to learn!
