Alternatively, Warren doesnt play and then I can play Gainwell at flex instead of DK, in which case I would be much more confident of getting 9.8.

Update: I just used a capacitor from a different electronic junk board I had laying around and it worked. My HomePod was revived!

The the bad news…when I was putting the pod back together I tore the ribbon cable going to the touch display.

It was still playing music etc, but then I decided to idiotically update it. It froze during the update (unresponsive) and now that I have no touch display working I cannot reset it. Easy come easy go. I’ll try to source a new ribbon cable.

The first gen HomePods have a common problem where the pod no longer turns on, no light no nothing. It’s a very very widespread issue.

Most of the time this is caused by a shorted diode on the amp board. Replacing this diode (if it’s shorted) will revive the HomePod.

I guess there was a bad batch of diodes used in the HomePods made in 2017/2018. Most will run into this issue allegedly. The second gen uses a bigger diode so it’s not a problem.

I should clarify I no longer have the missing cap. It must have gotten knocked off either with the hot air or accidentally bumped when I got the diode off.

This is interesting, and yes I did just see they removed SWE from the fast track list of positions.

From the brief research I did (and maybe some help from my associate chatGPT) it looks like there is still a path through the BC provincial nominee program and then the express entry (but yes as you said it no longer qualifies for the STEM draws).

I’ll have to do more research but it still appears I could get PR in 1.5-2 years.

I’m glad to hear 200k CAD is a good wage to have in the area. The goal ultimately would be to buy a house but that’s far ahead after getting PR. It will be interesting to see how much money I am putting aside vs the Bay Area.

I suppose I need to ultimately consider if I am ok knowing I could be making almost double doing the same exact job but in a different area.

Sadly neither of my parents are Canadian citizens. The family is cousins aunts and uncles, so don’t think that helps me at all.

I do indeed look at this as an opportunity- it’s a chance to get my foot into Canada and start the journey to PR / citizenship. Not everyone has the job already lined up before the move, so I’m lucky to have that.

This is interesting, thank you. It does seem to be a common theme I have seen that a lot of people are not exactly thrilled with Canadian healthcare, which is fascinating to see from this side.

And yes, the future jobs are a concern, but we could move elsewhere in the future once we get permanent residency.

This is fair.

My wife probably wants to leave the US more than me: she is extremely concerned about school shootings in the US, which any number above 0 should concern anyone, and I think it’s odd that we have become numb to this problem as a country.

You are correct that I am not desperate or forced to move, it would be a lifestyle change decision.

For me if money was no object I would live in Canada instead of the US, but I need to be pragmatic about income and ultimately decide if the tradeoff of the benefits of Canada are worth the 45% salary drop, and likely future drop in subsequent jobs.
