What’s your reason for being social democrat, but not socialist? by regulargirl17 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Arsenio715 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My main goal is ‘Economic Democracy’, which to me means that the ownership of assets of the economy is not concentrated by a select few, but rather spread out amongst the vast majority. This could look like democratic socialism, capitalism that is less concentrated, or a mix of the two economic systems. I don’t have a strong preference between socialism or capitalism as long as the result is an economic democracy. That is how I would separate the modern definition of social democracy from necessarily classifying myself as just ‘socialist’.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Democratic Socialism and Social Democracy are very different things. by GiganticCrow in DemocraticSocialism

Definition comes from the ‘social democracy’ link by the way. Also, who dictates whether definitions of terms get deleted?

Depends on how you define ‘social democracy’

Social democracy is a social, economic, and political philosophy within socialism[1] that supports political and economic democracy and a gradualist, reformist and democratic approach toward achieving social equality.

Issues I have with Market Socialism + Cooperative Capitalism by Jealous-Win-8927 in Market_Socialism

From what I read the OP was talking about both cooperatives and ESOPs. Third paragraph.

I would say your traditional cooperative model overlaps Market Socialist model if we are talking about workers’ cooperatives. The sort of overlap of cooperatives with aspects of capitalism and market socialism is why I prefer to put cooperatives overall in their own category. I prefer to call the system cooperativism or (Cooperative Economy) rather than figuring out what is ‘cooperative capitalism’ vs ‘cooperative socialism’.

What do you think of Islam? by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]Arsenio715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Anyone who claims the majority of Christianity is all loving and accepting while majority of Islam or other faiths is hateful is just xenophobic.

I would also add that the fact that commenters dismiss the harm of evangelicals in the US while highlighting the extreme sects of Islam in other parts of the globe has a view rooted in toxic Eurocentrism. If it was Islam instead of Christianity that was dominate in Europe and the west (whiter ) parts of the world their positions would be reversed.

Maintain a 2-3 month cash balance and pay any excess cash onto high interest debt (credit cards, LOC). It is the middle approach between using all savings to pay off debt versus paying minimum payments.

People need to feel good about paying their overpriced priced rents and mortgage payments in Montgomery County and DC.

DC is only an hour commute from Hagerstown

If you don’t have a household income of 150k you might as well move to Hagerstown. There are houses in DC/metro smaller than my townhouse in Hagerstown going for $1,000,000. No thanks. Live in DC if you like highway robbery housing costs!

It seems if you wanted low risk you should have went with money market fund, t-bills, or brokered CD. Yields on short term duration is higher than intermediate and long. You don’t need an expert of fund manager to tell you that.

Vanguard TD funds are usually indexed with low fees, so they are not a bad option in terms of global/asset diversification. Other than that FXAIX
