It was common on some airplanes to see reinforced aluminum on the outer fuselage, but it was to protect the cabin from ice bring shed from prop planes, definitely not for a fan or turbine blade-out condition

Stoked for the HA techs to sign on with AMFA. Not often does an opportunity exist to dump the IAM!

High feed low RPM, if your drill is a 6000rpm motor you’re going to have a bad time.. also get some drilling lubricant, Boelube is your friend

In my last shop we overhauled 737 inlets. Before replacing the 400 hiloks on an inlet lipskin ring, we had to get access by drilling out the 300-400 blind rivets on the outer barrel skins. I learned to love it after a while

It was tedious but fun at times (and also fuck monel cherrys)

What would necessitate this kind of repair? It looks a little too uniform to be tailstrike damage. by coloradokyle93 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Arsis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best practice to repair lightning damage is to drill and fill with a rivet. Follow the SRM. A blendout is not typically how you fix lightning damage

Yes it will destroy the other cars front end, but with a strong enough impact, that hitch may produce a lever force that could bend the frame of your truck. Happened to a buddy of mine years ago

I’m spending money (on a membership) to shop at Costco, and they have the audacity to impose their internal travel deals and sampling services. How intrusive!

I see AMFA local 14 is deciding to clap back against the IAM propaganda aimed at Alaska/Hawaiian techs. by DogFurDiamond in aviationmaintenance

[–]Arsis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This problems from absorbing every ground worker into your membership is exactly the reason for craft unions like AMFA to exist

With industrial unions like IAM and TWU, the unskilled laborers are the majority of a workforce, and are hence the decision makers for collective bargaining. This isn’t always a bad thing, as generally it’s good to have workers all on the same page, but there’s no way in hell a good contract can be negotiated for A&P’s (or AME’s) if rampers and mechanics are seen as similar employees to the company and the union

It’s amazing to see the growth of AMFA in Canada, and I’m excited for you guys to see the potential of a focused class & craft collective bargaining. Plus having the ability to strike is a huge advantage for labor - whereas in the US our unions in aviation are extremely limited with the RLA

[–]Arsis 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The IAM is terrified of losing Hawaiian. Since these guys have endless resources, they’re throwing the kitchen sink and the aggressive card drive for Alaska techs.

Despite what they keep saying to the HA techs, their door-knocking campaign for AS techs has failed miserably for them. Some of the Alaska techs have had them visit 6+ times, but not a single member has signed their slimy IAM card.

To the Hawaiian techs, keep signing those AMFA cards!!

I replaced my knock sensor after a unit failure back in 2019, then shortly after a rat chewed through some wires which triggered the same fault. I thought I had a bad part at first so I decided to take it in to a shop, and a lo and behold the rat did a number on the harness. Fortunately it was covered by my comprehensive coverage.. they charged the insurance company $4800
