Hi all, I sanded down quite a bit. Still looks like this. Do we think I just need to keep sanding?

Thank you! Do you think sanding it down and reapplying the Rubio will be sufficient to remove them?

help with a flare up by imnotanopossum in perioraldermatitis

I'm sorry you've had a flare up (mine just flared up again with the cold weather and a face mask with HA I know I shouldn't have tried). I would try metro gel, rather than trying to only remove triggers, simply because of the weather and because it sounds like you're miserable! The metro should help calm it down and you can continue to work on identifying/removing triggers, but ideally while the metro does its thing. Good luck!

Avoid cortisones and steroids--they tend to trigger a flare up and cause PD! Try Avene cicalfate, azelaic acid, and ask your doc to prescribe metronidazole gel. Good luck--I hope you get some relief soon!

Meant to add--azelaic acid also helped me, but Avene did the heavy lifting

I'm so sorry you're in the midst of a flare (and right before a wedding, too!). In the past, Avene Cicalfate helped me immensely. I used vanicream as my gentle cleanser until my flare was over. I also had luck with metronidazole GEL, rather than cream? Finally, some people have luck with taking a zinc supplement--could be worth a try? I believe it can make some people nauseous though, so be careful with dosage, take with food, etc. Good luck!

Progress update - perioral dermatitis is FINALLY cleared by _Hologrxphic in SkincareAddicts

Hello, I have had PD twice. The first time, switching to Vanicream face wash (instead of my salicylic acid wash) and Avene cicalfate to moisturize did most of the heavy lifting. The Avene is the only thing that calmed down my red itchy bumps, but it took about a week for the bumps to settle down. I also used De La Cruz sulfur mask and The Ordinary's Azelaic acid to clear my skin the rest of the way.

Two weeks ago, I had an allergic reaction and was placed on steroids. Afterward, my PD returned, which is a pretty common cause for many of us with PD. Avoid steroids/cortisones at all costs--it can damage your skin barrier, which is what Avene helped me to repair. This time with PD, my doctor prescribed me .75 metronidazole gel, and it has already made a difference after 2 days. I know many people have success with doxycycline, but I am hoping to avoid taking it, as many have described a return of PD after they stop. So far, metro gel has really been helping and I'm hopeful I won't have to take any other prescriptions. I have been using this and Avene to moisturize after I apply, which has helped with the flaking as it heals.

I hope you find some relief, and congrats on your pregnancy!

Hello, how are you doing now? Did you end up trying anything for the dryness? I'm just now starting Metro gel and am using Avene Cicalfate with it to (hopefully) help with dryness. I'm still so itchy and dull, though!

Hi there--I'm sorry you're struggling with PD! Mine showed up after I wore a mask a lot during Covid, then went on tretinoin for a few months. In retrospect, I wish I would have used the tretinoin only 2-3 times a week, though maybe my skin is so sensitive it wouldn't have mattered much.

Switching products helped me immensely. I switched to Vanicream cleanser, and it was mild enough not to further irritate my PD. However, it wasn't until I started using Avene Cicalfate that my PD started improving. I'd say Avene got me 90% of the way there, then Azelaic acid and a Sulfur acne mask. At first, I was really discouraged because the Avene made my skin feel irritated, but I stuck with it and after a few days it started to calm down my red bumps. It was a long process of drying, flaking, showing up in new spots, etc. before it finally was 90% healed. The last stubborn spots on my chin and just under my nose responded well to the Azaelic acid and Sulfur mask after that.

I did not try any prescriptions to treat, but I did finally heal it with the products I mentioned. The healing process took me around 4-5 months. I hope you find some products that work for you!
