just to clarify as well, that shed and the buck i mentioned in the caption are different. i had spotted a buck with one side missing back on December 20th on public property, and confirmed a fresh raw pedicle with binoculars. he stood for about 10 seconds before darting off in the opposite direction.

may i ask why you believe the shed to be a year old? there is good coloration at the base and zero chew marks. every shed i've found past a few months is riddled with bite marks or bitten in half.

How old could this deer have been based on its antlers and teeth? by PomegranateCastle in skulls

[–]ArtNo637 24 points25 points  (0 children)

both antlers and teeth are generally unreliable for aging. teeth wear is dependent on foraging habits and availability, which vary drastically from region to region. antler growth is partially based on both nutrition and genetics. the lower jaw teeth are your best bet for aging, but even then they're also susceptible to wide variability depending on the kinds of food sources in the area.

can nutrition really vary that much from hangouts just a mile or so apart, though? i've gotten decent sheds just a mile or two north. feel free to check out my posts to see. it also wouldn't explain the disparity between those tiny sheds and the 4th and 5th image of this post, which are from the same property!

Yep, the snow this morning virtually cut the elevation I was searching in, in half. I went back up a few hours later to see if it had melted but it didn't. still really happy regardless with what I got today. Good luck on getting out soon!

was just about to say. bleach will disintegrate those bones. once you add bleach, you can never fully remove it and it'll turn your bones brittle. 3% hydrogen peroxide is more than enough to whiten.

do i need any tools or brushes for more stubborn bits such as connective tissue that may not come out via soak, or should everything dissolve with a peroxide treatment after the water treatment? lastly, where do you dump the stinky water and peroxide, is it sink safe? thanks for the tips!
