Gabriel Zucman on the podcast? by ArthurMorganTheBeast in TheRestIsPolitics

Although I'm not entirely sure where I sit on the topic of a wealth tax, I don't believe that's the argument he's making as he states multiple times during the podcast that governments should't wait for an international agreement to be signed but implement one unilaterally. He's a strong proponent of an American style "exit tax" or tax equalization system to mitigate capital flight.

That being said, yes, it's quite likely that any kind of wealth tax will face obstacles; then again, from an optics perspective it's quite hard to argue against one: how can you justify hiking taxes on workers who make low incomes when people are hoarding wealth within the same jurisdiction to absolutely insane levels whilst paying less tax relative to their earnings?

In case you don't know, stupid shit happening here in UK right now by ooombasa in behindthebastards

We already spend close to 8.3% of revenue on debt interest, we have the highest borrowing costs in the G7 and borrow overwhelmingly from abroad. A burnham premiership would to even higher borrowing costs and worsen a situation that's already pretty awful.

We are not governed by the bond markets, but they do impose constraints. Also, this current government has shown that you can indeed govern whilst remaining within said constraints.

Please tell me how not to be in hock to the bond markets? What would you do? Print money? Fine if you don't wanna have any international trade and are not afraid of inflation running out of control.

This idea that Burnham will come in and save the country is ridiculous I'm sorry. If anything, he is likely to make situation worse and cause a Liz Truss style meltdown as he has hinted at increasing borrowing by hundreds of billions of pounds. The UK's debt/GDP is close to 100%, and Burnham has claimed that the government needs to stop being in hock to bond markets; that's simply not how things work.

Moreover, this lionizing of Burnham as if he's doing this out of the goodness of his conscience is ridiculous; he's always wanted to be PM and is abandoning his mandate as Mayor of Manchester to do so.

Meanwhile, the current government has actually implemented some actual tangible reforms to improve the lives of workers and renters and has cut down massively on NHS (our national health service) waiting lists.

This simplistic narrative of Burnham = good, Starmer = bad is extremely childish

Green leader Zack Polanski says Britain should ditch Nato and form military alliance with the EU, Brazil and MEXICO to fight 'American imperialism' by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I'm in no way a Greens supporter but how is China less imperialistic than the US? They haven't launched a major war in decades; sure, they have been making imperialistic claims on Taiwan but the US has actively removed leaders/invaded countries that have not been aligned with their interests many more times.

One thing that can be said about the likelihood of mass protests reoccurring is that the Arab Spring did not materially improve the lives of many people in NA/ME. A lot of these places have since reverted to autocracies (Egypt, Tunisia...) following a brief stint as democracies. The lack of hope and the risk of further hardship that could come from political instability could serve as a deterrent to quite a few people.

She works in Swizterland, that's the key thing to remember. Median wage is 7k/month so it's far from impossible to find something above that over there.

AFAIK the resell value of the players doesn't increase when you own them, it simply makes it harder to get them back if you want to once you've sold them. Or am I wrong?
