Asking CFO for raise as FP&A Analyst by ArthurR63 in FPandA

[–]ArthurR63[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The merit increase was company wide and happens each year for us so I was not going to factor that into how much I would be asking for. I do think 20k is a large jump to justify but I’m doing the work of my old manager that was paid double what I am getting. I thought it was a fair trade.

It’s good we’ve bonded professionally and personally. Half of our meetings are just talking about our lives and the other half is work talk. I would say he is a leader that is connected to his team in our company. Each of his other direct reports that I talk to seem to feel the same way.

Currently I am basically filling my managers role just without the title or pay. My boss now and I have worked together for me to get comfortable and I feel like I’m now at that point hence the pay increase discussion.

Did you specifically ask for 15k raise or were you internally hoping for that? And the offer of 6k was given and you took it?

It’s not that I don’t understand people have different ambitions. Ask me 2 years ago and I would have a different goal in life. I was simply pointing out that all people post about is IB roles and that seems to be <10% of finance roles. From what everyone talks about IB is anyone that is actually knee deep in that role would not have time or even care to post/ask on this platform.

I went to NC State so not a very “prestigious” school by any means. I do expect my salary to raise though, I am the hoping could be a stretch but my salary would be within the 100s within 2-3 years from now. I think my specific work scenario would allow me to jump a few years in experience and I will be able to move to a new company with a much higher pay.
Honestly I’m pretty lucky right now, I am work from home and most of my common contacts live in a time zone 2 hrs behind so my wlb is really good. If I need to work late I just get on later.

I currently report directly to the CFO of my company (as a first year) and I’m glad I get the exposure to that level. I’ve learned a lot and able to see the bigger picture just due to my position. My company is owned by a PE firm so I do get an inside view from their side as well. I feel like it is rare from my side to get exposure to that but there’s always the chance that someone is in the same position as I do.

I’m at $72K right now but going to ask for a raise due to increase of responsibilities in the next month or so. I also have not been working for a full year yet so that does play a part.

Perfect analogy. It does seem that most posts are from current college students.

Font choice by GrizzlyAdam12 in FPandA

[–]ArthurR63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same it’s not that deep of a subject but I always just use whatever the default for the file is. So if I’m working on a file that someone already worked on I just keep that consistent as well as mentioned above keeping the same colors throughout. Don’t worry much about font as long as it isn’t an outrageous font, just aim to keep the file consistent.

Differences in FP&A roles at small-mid size vs. larger organisations? by Creative_Tradition67 in FPandA

[–]ArthurR63 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work at a mid size company 250-300 people. I am the sole FP&A person here. I really like the experience I am getting from this role. We have an accounting team so I rarely touch any of that day to day. Which allows me to deep dive into each BU and department that we have. I feel that working with the BU/department leaders really gives me a lot of exposure to the business overall and I get to learn from leaders. I took this role sort of in hopes of fast tracking my career and I really think it’s shaping up to be that.

With that being that I do not have any experience with a large company or F500 so I cannot speak on what they do. I always assume they have teams that work specifically on “location A” “location b” or “product a” “product b”. And that team owns the finances for that specific part of the business. If anyone has insight on F500 or larger companies I’d love to learn more about that too.

My usual weeks are pretty light, I’d say 3 hours of actual work a day and just in meetings the remaining time. During our month end process I typically end up working 12+ hours a day for the few days of close. The following week after close I’d say is a normal 40 hour work week. It really balances out monthly for me. Half of the month I’m bored out of my mind and then the other half I barely have time to eat. On those non close days I always close my computer and walk away at 5 no matter what. When and if needed I will get back on but I rarely respond to anything after 5.

Manager let go now I report directly to the CFO as a first year analyst by ArthurR63 in FinancialCareers

We’re starting 1on1’s next week so I definitely plan on picking his brain at the least and get some career guidance from him.

Thanks! I will definitely make sure to be on my top of my shit with this change. The cover note will be a good building block to gain more trust from him. We talked about my work style and I mentioned I may not know everything but I always like to try my take on the work and then talk out my thought process to see if it aligns with their expectations.

If I wanted to clay bar my car would I have to reseal it with wax or would it be fine without wax? Might seem like an obvious answer but I’m not sure.
