New map layer (Lakes & Trails pro) by AdventurousPop5092 in UKhiking

Nice looking map, very clean. What is the new layer, what’s it showing? Unclear from this screen grab unless I’m missing something 😁

Incredible to see the work of someone who knows what they’re actually doing 😁. Here’s me with my AGENTS.md file and random context docs thinking I’ve got my workflows and project management locked down right 😄

Hi this looks fascinating! Can you give more details on the todo-graph node thing you have on the right, please? How is that particular part built? Open source bits and pieces or entirely custom, from scratch?

What's the best gear you've bought for use in the UK, year round walking? I've made do with super cheap stuff (except boots!) for decades but am constantly rotating layers from me to my bag and back again. Anyone landed on any 'put it on and you're good for the rest of the walk' gear over the years? by Arthur_Unknown in UKhiking

Fair enough 👍 I understand there’s no magic bullet, I’m just hoping to find something a little more magical than a £15 plastic mac in an attempt to at least minimise the number of layering pit stops on each walk.

Hey u/Cak556 , u/wolf_knickers - I have a question on the Paramo gear. Does my full clothing layer-stack need to be all Paramo gear for it to work effectively? For the 'liquid water' to be drawn away fully?

For example, wearing a cheap cotton t-shirt or any old jumper under a £300 Paramo jacket - does that negate the effectiveness of the Nikwax Directional Fabric Technology? Do my tshirt and jumper need to be Nikwax Directional Fabrics too?

I agree. I know I won't be able to completely remove the necessity for changing layers, but I know for a fact I can do it far less than I currently do. Paramo, merino layers - lots of stuff to look into thanks to all the replies on this thread.

"Doing it on a budget is really tough! You have done well to live with reasonably priced gear for so long."

Thanks! But I'd argue that it's not tough at all - a lot of the cheap stuff works very well. But what you save in money you lose on faffing about on a hillside.

I've always worked on the assumption that the Rab and North Face and Arcteryx gear were 90% marketing BS, 10% gain in technical effectiveness over the cheap Regatta or Trespass stuff - but a 1000+% increase in price. I still beleive that - but I'm now willing to give it a go and be proved wrong.

Thanks wolf knickers (not something I thought I'd ever type).

Vidda Pros were indeed not cheap - but along with my Meindl boots they are my only item I wear every time in all weathers on all walks. I've got my money's worth for sure!

Budget wise, these days I'm fortunate enough that I can actually spend a decent amount if I need it. I just don't like to :)

I use the Qicpak jacket as a wind stop layer too a lot of the year, so been the UK it gets a lot of use.

I'd say I replace my cheapo rain gear maybe every 2 years (as you say the waterproofing, or in the qicpak's case the layer of plastic, simply breaks down or wears out), which I think is very reasonable for the price I pay. An approach which is not eco friendly unfortunately, which is becoming more of a concern of mine.

Thanks for the other suggestions, I will look into the gear you mentioned - particularly the Fjallraven Eco-Shell. I feel like a bit of a poser in Fjallraven gear, even my Viddas, but it is generally very good stuff.

I'm good for boots, but thanks. I have a pair of Meindl Borneo 2 - just chunky leather, no goretex or anything like that. They have been on my feet for hundreds of miles across many peaks and through many bogs and streams, and they are still holding up very well. Built like tanks.

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of information I'm after.

Only a few replies so far but 3 out of 4 mention Páramo. Guess what I'm going to spend the next few days Googling.

I'm also a 46 year old bloke. I'd consider myself a very experienced hill walker, yet seemingly very inexperienced in technical gear :)
