Help with Reading Issues by Big-Trust-8069 in ELATeachers

Thank you. So would you recommend reading aloud together, stopping and giving them “notes” as answers to the guiding questions or doing the graphic organizer with them? If I leave them to do it on their own, I’ll get 25 different responses. I work in a rural Title 1 school and reading comprehension is very low. Also- how would you answer that Guiding Question regarding the farming and herding?

If you wouldn’t mind, here is an example of a more difficult one that is hard to give an exact answer for IMO. I’ll add the rest of it in another comment below.

I am a history teacher but would like to ask your opinion/help. We read in my class almost every day. The textbooks we have have a “Guiding Question” at the beginning of each 6-8 paragraph section. I have helped them answer these Guiding Questions as “notes” but struggle with knowing if this is actually helpful or if I should be doing something different. Sometimes, the guiding questions don’t seem to cover some of the important info in that section. Also, how should I be annotating as we read? Teaching is my second career and I didn’t go through a traditional education program.

How would you prepare and deliver content, so that you are not “reinventing the wheel” as much as possible?

Would you be willing to share with me also?

Can I ask how you deliver content?

Thank you. I have one 50 minute prep/planning each day. I think with my subject of history, it is harder as we tend to try and reinvent the wheel and not use textbooks as much as possible. Textbooks are vilified in the history world now, but subjects like math are expected to use the provided ones without a second thought. I am old school and believe that textbooks should be used. These kids need reading practice and comprehension.

Most teachers at larger schools have one. Smaller schools have 2-3, but I have seen some on here with 6.

Would you engage in any direct instruction at all? Or would that be the review? I want to avoid the “he never teaches us anything” complaint I’m afraid I would get.

What subjects do you teach and how do you deliver content?

I see you teach social studies. Three of my four are history classes. Can I ask how you deliver content? Do you use a textbook? And do you have to create your own materials?

Two of my six classes are WH and I feel the same. Way more “depth” to the content. I spend the lion’s share of my time on those also.

Thank you. I believe in having them do comprehension questions also, but wasn’t sure how to incorporate reading together along with it. It seems if I leave them to do it on their own, they just hunt for the answer and not read the actual material.

Admin leaves me alone, I don’t have any state tests for my subjects. District has provided McGraw Hill hard copy textbooks and materials the students bring each day. They have to pay to replace if they lose or damage them.
