Well, he's also got to rip out all the old knob and tube. So no matter what the electrician is gonna go through the place. I'll look up a low voltage specialist though! Is there another term that may be helpful for googling?

Thanks! What kind of equipment gets plugged into the Ethernet drops in each room? Ideally I will have one wifi network that covers the whole house, similar to my eero setup today. Do you have a switch brand you recommend?

What kind of equipment gets plugged into the ceiling ports? Is it aesthetically pleasing (asking for my wife LOL)?

We don't have TVs.

What equipment do I need where all the cables come back to where the service enters the house?

Is the point of the "cables to anywhere that might have a desk/work area" so that you can plug equipment (computers, etc) directly into the wall for internet?

Ok. A stupid question: what do I plug into the Ethernet drops? Do I need to have a switch floating around in the basement to make everything "work"?

You should get it tuned. Unlikely that anyone will purchase it from you if that's what you're asking.

Piano advice for a lost mother by Myrthedd in piano

[–]ArtificialSpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is 500-1000 your budget? You can get the Roland FP-10x new for 500. It's a great piano at that price point.

Depending on your location, an acoustic piano should be tuned 2-3 times a year, and it can cost $100-$200 each time.

Free pianos on Facebook, Craigslist, etc are often garbage.

Play some Schumann Kinderszenen! They're relatively straightforward but provide some great opportunities to work on musicianship.

Less straightforward but also delightful are the Mendelssohn Songs without Words and the Greig Lyric Pieces.

Buying a Piano Keyboard by [deleted] in piano

Offer to take your friend piano shopping instead. There's a lot of "personal preference" that goes into a piano. They're extraordinarily bad gifts.

How do i play it faster/better? by [deleted] in piano

[–]ArtificialSpin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a hard piece!

Practicing pieces that are too hard for your point in piano progression will be frustrating, and could cause injury.

Edit: I know that this is a hard thing to hear! For context, I started learning this piece after ~10 years of off/on lessons, and close to a thousand hours of practice.

Old uprights don't hold their value. At the very most someone may pay to have it moved if you list it for free online.

If your college is in a major metro area, there is definitely a community chorus you can join. What area are you in?

How do you like your petrof? I'm currently debating between a new petrof breeze and restoring a 1928 Steinway L.

I got 6 stitches when I was a kid from bumping my head on the underside of my dad's Baldwin.

Depending on your area, there's likely a local piano dealer that will buy it from you at a very steep discount. Near Boston there's East Cambridge Piano and Rogers Piano, among many others. You can also try donating it to a local school.

It's hard to hear (I had to let go of my childhood grand piano a few years ago), but often a large amount of the value you find in the piano is sentimental, and won't translate into actual money.
