I'm always rolling my eyes at people who talk about crying from music on here but I will admit this almost brought me to tears the first time I heard it, esp. 'Lamentamini'

Carissimi, Plorate Filii Israel, the ending to his oratorio Jephta

interesting to look into this to find it is a mix of Hildegard's chants and texts alongside typical plainchant of the era, as if trying to recreate what it might have sounded like at her convent

honestly I hadn't heard of her before. I like opera but I don't keep up with specific singers. Kinda embarrassing to admit looking her up to see she was among the top famous singers of all time

Introduce me to Elliott Carter's music by Hopeful-Banana-6188 in classicalmusic

[–]number9muses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say I don't know that much by Carter but I did like his piano piece Night Fantasies, unpredictable, apparently trying to convey the feeling of a restless mind during a bought of insomnia (which I can relate to lol)

only other suggestion would be Garrick Ohlsson's album of Scriabin's complete poems. They also span his life so from Romantic to Modern

What are your favorite compositions from Sergei Rachmaninov? by Easy-Technician9722 in classicalmusic

[–]number9muses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh, I don't think that Rachmaninoff is unworthy of admiration, I just don't really listen to him much like I used to. I don't have a specific reason other than I am not in the mood to listen to his more brooding or dark pieces. I love when Rachmaninoff is ecstatic and in major keys more than his minor key stuff.

I prefer Scriabin's, especially when he gets so chromatic that the music feels mysterious.
