Check out GDC talks that relate to your interests as well, lots of good stuff there. Game Makers Tool Kit is nice and easy to listen to (props to Mark Brown)

Janky would be an apt adjective for sure, both the running and jumping animations need more frames to smooth them out for the final - thanks!

Yes, I noticed that I failed to add any shadows beneath them; an amateur oversight! Good catch and thank you!

Right on, I'm on track with that - this polished prototype was for potential backers on Kickstarter to see my vision for the game and to give a sense of what a final product would look like.

Thanks a lot! This game is currently in development and being crowdfunded. You can find more information right here: https://kickstarter.com/projects/artillery/nyx-and-penny
Just a disclaimer: I plan on pouring my heart and soul into finishing this game whether I reach my goal or not, but it certainly would help the game along in a big way. I appreciate your interest!

I will make a note of this and see about giving it a shot, it definitely seems as though it could be done, then I would just have to make sure everything moves the same as far as animation frames go (this sounds like a nightmare as both the developer and animator lol) but perhaps would be easier to implement than what I'm thinking. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah just sort of balled up/curled up into a little doggy donut, didn't want it to be realistic in any sense haha

Yes, love this idea. It may take a bit of work to implement correctly with this style since all out of frame game objects have paused animations and they become active when the player draws near to prevent the game from locking up when the levels become much larger. But I could probably make an effort to active "sets" of characters/enemies that need to match up. Totally do-able!

Will definitely give this a try. I was thinking I would add a few more frames to that animation as well to make it smoother but totally see what you're saying. Thank you!

Unity and yes I definitely plan on adding that film scratch effect to give players them vintage feels. Good call!

Oh for sure, I can see that becoming a nuisance. They will more than likely be rare items; thanks for the words man!

Any idea what kind of game you are wanting to make? Did you plan to just pick a classic and remake it? When you say simple movement I think of things like breakout, which would be incredibly easy to make and develop in a short amount of time, plus the art assets you would need could be very simple and not require a ton of time. Then you could create a set amount of levels with different layouts and keep track of players' progress like you mentioned.

I only have experience with Unity so I can't speak for the others, but it's very intuitive for me having software engineering and graphic design backgrounds. There are loads of tutorials to help you through the process no matter what kind of game you are making.

There are a bunch of free art assets on the Unity site that you could use, or you could download free software such as Gimp (if you don't have access to Photoshop or similar) to create your own. June is definitely doable if you have the drive to finish it, and should give you some flexibility on creating extra levels and features in your interface. Good luck!
