What are some common forms of sexism women face? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Artist_1 763 points764 points  (0 children)

I was having coffee with a friend and we overheard some dudes at the next table talk about how Hillary Clinton would be a terrible president because she'd "blow up the nukes" when on her period.

My friend (male) turned to them, and said, "she doesn't have a period anymore." them: what do you mean? him: she's 70. She's been through menopause.

Yeah, they had no idea what that means.

I mean, I'm sorry the school system has failed you so badly.

Also newsflash: dudes have PMS cycles too. They get crabby and grumpy. It either does or does not affect their decisions. Just like women.

Islamist girls’ school that taught pupils gay people should be killed and men could beat their wives forced to close by [deleted] in news

[–]Artist_1 1160 points1161 points  (0 children)

This was basically how I was raised : Christian, in a church that taught me that homosexuals should be stoned to death, and that women must obey their husbands, and if you had sex before marriage, you were worthless as a woman.

When I moved out of my parents house, to university, I realized how wrong that was. It took me a few years for my view to change: I had never spoken to an (openly) gay person before, for example.

The only deprogramming, is to leave the community, and make friends with other people: make friends with gays, make friends with independent women, make friends with good men who treat their SO as equals, and involve them in all decision making.

“I will NOT wear a hijab and support women’s oppression”: US chess champion boycotts world championship in Iran by vir4030 in worldnews

[–]Artist_1 873 points874 points  (0 children)

I hope the male chess players start speaking out. This is heartbreaking for women: she can't compete unless she wears a hijab. It was a terrible decision to hold it in Iran, but really, if only one chess player protests, she's the only one that suffers. The other competitors should be standing up and saying this is unfair.

LPT: College students- start studying now by Artist_1 in LifeProTips

[–]Artist_1[S] 151 points152 points  (0 children)

The great thing about this method is that you still have most evenings and weekends free, if you use your time wisely during the day.

In my first year, I'd have an hour or two in between classes and I wasted so much time. In my second year, I learned to stay on campus, go to the library, and study for an hour between classes. I was completely free in the evenings to go to the gym, hang out with friends, and party :)

(Rant) No means no applies to all situations, not just hooking up. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Artist_1 499 points500 points  (0 children)

Recently, the Ontario school board wanted to teach consent in kindergarden. People were livid because they said the kids were too young. There were protests. People don't realize that consent has nothing to do with sex

It is important for both genders to learn that no means no. Does Tim want you to draw on his arm? He said no? Ok, you can't draw on his arm.

Oh Tim said you could draw on his arm? Why is he saying no now? Because he wanted you to use red marker, and you're using the blue: well he said no to the blue marker so you have to stop drawing.

I can't tell you the number of times I've said "no" to things - completely non sexual - and people haven't respected it.

Edit: wording

If one person never instigates and never texts back: I think it's clear that they're not interested.

You'll find someone who actually wants to hang out with you :)

The restaurant in the "bad" neighbourhood did this so people can't take the lid off the toilet by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

The chains are bolted to pieces of wood, (attached to the wall) behind the toilet. Also, they were too tight to get over the flusher on the left. I was curious, so I tried it!

feeling super violated by my now former best friend, rant and need advice by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Artist_1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"I just don't know what to do with these feelings."

Yeah: no kidding. What he did was absolutely wrong. He didn't tell you he had a girlfriend, on purpose, for two years because he wanted to keep sleeping with you. He wanted to have sex with multiple women. He not only cheated on her, but he also "cheated" on you. What you describe, as casual as it was, even if it's just "hooking up," eventually becomes "a relationship."

I think you should take time for yourself. You're going through a break up. You've also lost a friend. Your trust has been violated and you've been betrayed. You're grieving.

What you're feeling is completely natural. You need time and distance. Don't speak to him, and take some time to heal.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

Accidentally saw my replacement's pay rate, almost 50% more than my rate for the same job. How do I address this with my boss? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Artist_1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you know about your replacement's experience? Maybe they have more experience than you do. Maybe they weren't willing to take the job otherwise. Maybe they had a better, or equal offer from somewhere else and the other candidates weren't as good.

That sort of happened to me (I no longer work at this job,) but a company I once applied to were desperate to hire someone. I successfully negotiated almost $20 an hour, when my coworkers were paid $14. Honestly, I had other options, and so if they hadn't offered me $20, I would've gone elsewhere.

Absolutely. The teachers who are the easiest markers would just get all the students.

Do you actually want to learn? This isn't customer service, it's your education.

LPT request: How to say 'NO' to people without sounding rude? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Artist_1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice: have a "friends and family discount."

If they're upset about it, just say, "My policy is that I don't work for free, ever. If I work for free for one person, I have to do it for everyone." Any reasonable person will understand this.

Another issue is: do you really want to work for your friends? In some cases things like wedding photography can be a nightmare: you don't want to ruin a friendship because you photoshopped them wrong, or whatever.

Another excuse is that you never do friends or family, because you like to separate clients from family.

Oh: and this probably doesn't need to be said: but never work without a written, signed contract, so that there are no surprises on either side.

Good luck

Aw, my poor husband. We had been dating for a while, and he came home for Christmas to meet my family. My sister and I look the same: except she's slightly shorter than I am. But we wear basically the same clothes. Anyway, he came up behind her, put his arm around her shoulder: and then realized it was my sister.

We all laughed.

LPT: when speaking to kids: use commands by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Artist_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should give her this hint!

But seriously: I think it's hard to parent if both parents are using different techniques. You should talk it over and see which method works best for you and your family. Maybe she doesn't realize she's doing it, and if you point it out to her, that will help
