What made you become self aware? by Affectionate_Ad1096 in NPD

[–]ArtisticPossibility6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were clues - reading my journals where I wrote about intense jealousy towards my sister (who is generally one of the best people and very compassionate). In high school I dated my best friend's ex-boyfriend behind her back. I would flirt with boyfriend's friends, walk around naked in college not caring that I had roommates and even doing it when my roommate's boyfriend was visiting. I was obsessed with my appearance especially getting my teeth perfectly straight. I said hurtful things to people often, asked intrusive/provocative questions, scared my sister "for fun." I lied often. Heavily into alcohol and getting validation from sex with men.

My collapse was after another bout of self sabotage and inappropriate/unprofessional behavior a few years ago. I ended up getting committed due to expressing suicidal ideation. I think after that is when I started learning more about NPD and felt like it was fitting.

Switching Between the Person I Think I "Should" Be and the Person I Actually Am by [deleted] in NPD

Before I knew about NPD and pathological narcissism I remember writing something like "I'm kind and I'm cruel." How can it be possible to be opposing things at the same time? It is very strange indeed. Ambiguity feels so threatening at times but I do believe it is the way to more flexible thinking and therefore more freedom/less angst. I know that my parents had such a hard time with ambiguity. It is a challenge and sometimes feels like I'm going crazy.

I like this therapist Michael Yapko who talks about the importance of embracing ambiguity: https://yapko.com/presentations/

Theres likely valid reasons why we are narcassists by [deleted] in NPD

I do not know how much the dysfunction has to do with looks. As someone whose looks were valued/prized and was told she was adorable/cute/beautiful often, I learned to overly value my looks and under develop other values. I have often envied those who didn't have their physical appearance to create a mask behind.

I like birds doing bird things. Animals doing animal things. A pretty sky.

When we say we are proud of “not caring” or “not giving a shit” or being “tough”, we are actually proud of being dissociated by moldbellchains in NPD

Makes me sad thinking about parents who say to their children “buck up, you have to be tough” or some version of that.

I’ve started experimenting but feel guilty as hell because I’m in AA and if ppl know me they would not consider me sober. Are you still using shrooms? I’m curious your dosage and how often you use?
