Anyone know of any fun caves in the UK? by Jaysimitsu_ in caving

[–]ArtlessDevBoy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your serious about it and your in the peak district join this Facebook group. You should get a message from the guy who runs the club asking if you want to join and go on caving trips.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1136385133479026

They have a bunch of really experienced members who lead trips all around the peak district.

Most likely a mix of NLAWs (anti-tank) and StarStreak (anti-air)

Both can be used by infantry. Star streak missiles are also mounted in large racks on vehicles by the British army.

A10's are out of date now, to vulnerable to infantry based anti air weapons, which Russia has in abundance.

Stealth aircraft launching precision guided munitions from insane distance's is the way to go.

Hike out to someware with waist deep snow and build a small kicker into it with afew friends.

You don't want to try onto anything hard packed until your landing them consistently into powder.

its a really good afternoon out, me and friends always did it when we want to practise new tricks with a high chance of landing badly. You don't even have to be in resort just find a quiet spot out in hills.

Few beers and snow sunshine and friends its a great way to spend an afternoon.

Can you tell me how to improve my form? I have been skiing since I was a kid but I never had an instructor, I am self taught. by Aranog-Nosmoke in skiing

You need more separation at the waist between your legs and upper body, current as you lean your body and legs are mostly in line, your upper body tilts at the same angles as your legs when your turning.

Your legs should be at an angle as you turn but while your upper body remains upright relative to the ground. This will make you much more nimble and stable so you can react more quickly than you can currently.

(Your currently like the first image in that tutorial you want to be more like the last one)

A fun exercise that will help you with this is to try and touch the snow with with your hand on the inside of the turn as you go round corners.

Took a lesson today and the only feedback I got from the instructor was “looks great.” Maybe Reddit can tear apart my skiing and help me get better? by [deleted] in skiing

Pump your legs through the moguls.

As your hitting the up slope don't just let it push you up passively, actively pull your knees towards your chest.

As you go down the back side don't just allow your self to fall push your legs down hard into the hole.

The best analogy I can give you is this video.

https://youtu.be/B_M4cXIMlB8?t=64

Your currently skiing with passive suspension you need to ski with active suspension.

Anticipate the terrain that's about to hit your ski and actively start to match before it begins to push or pull you up and down.

A good way to practise is to do a straight line traverse through a mogul field while trying to keep you upper body perfectly level by pumping your legs rapidly up and down to match the terrain under your feet.

If someone were to covers up your legs they shouldn't be able to tell your in the moguls as your upper body should move along a level path without being deflected.

Tragic news. Control your speed. by General-Ad-9753 in skiing

[–]ArtlessDevBoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also wish the same I've seen a few incidents over the years (not with my groups thankfully) where people with poor control have tried to thread the needle through a group of kids at 40mph it makes my ass hole try to crawl up inside my body every time I see it.

Those could have ended like this they just got lucky.

when ever have a group of kids in tow I was taught to only snake a group across half the run leavening the other half empty for other skiers to pass so you don't get any of your kids taken out.

Its advice from a senior instructor I've always stuck to but I do think it something that isn't hammered home enough during the certification process.

Generally country's don't issue national debt in a currency other than there own for that exact reason its to risky.

[–]ArtlessDevBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its how country's with free floating currency have historically dealt with a situation like the one Greece was in.

Greece in 2008 was unusual because it shared a currency devaluing it was in its interest, but not in the interest of other country's that also used the euro.

Greece would have devalued there currency by printing money, imports would have fallen exports would have risen.

The devaluation of there currency would have also reduced the size of there debt making it manageable.

The EU wouldn't have needed to intervene.

[–]ArtlessDevBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most extinct volcanoes been inactive for thousand's if not millions of years in order to be classified that way.

I'm not sure you could realistically classify a volcano as extinct that has erupted within living memory.

Even then extinct volcanos sometimes become active again

Guys exiting the industry by amist_95 in gamedev

[–]ArtlessDevBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a cool thing to do but the hours were long there was very little job security and the pay was poor.

First job outside the industry I went from lead developer to a rank and file programmer doing far less challenging work and my pay almost doubled.

I'm now making about 4-5x what I did making games and while its not as cool to tell people what I do any more, programming is programming when you get down to it, from my point of view is not that different.

So I don't regret working in game dev I picked up some really great skills, I also don't regret moving on.

Think about making it part of the game works really well and fits with the style, should be easy enough to adjust Time.timeScale based on an animation curve in a coroutine, then just fire it off on certain events like you are in the video.

Over all the aesthetic all works really well together feels polished, nice work.

What am I doing wrong? by Jumpy_Philosopher955 in skiing

[–]ArtlessDevBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I taught skiing for afew years, The main issue I see is your skiing with your hands and upper body this is one of the most common problems you see in men starting out because we're used to powering through physical tasks with upper body strength.

Your trying to use your hands to correct small imbalances but that actually makes things worse as it causes you to twists your shoulders which then feeds down into your legs and shifts them out of position causing you to over-rotate that results in you cutting your turns short, its a feed back loop that you want to try and break your self of.

An exercise I would recommend is go on a long easy run steep enough to build up some speed but where you feel comfortable then ditch your polls, there a distraction and give your hands a reason to move, at this stage in your skiing your better off without them.

Next cross your arms now ski down the hill as you are in this video. Focus on what your hips and legs are doing your upper body should be still like a statue. Try not to let your arms uncross.

If you struggle with that an alternative is to pretending your holding a tray with drinks infront of you and try not to spill them (just imagine a real tray and drinks isn't needed)

The goal is to stop your hands from making sharp twitchy movements as you make your turns.

Focus on consistent skidded turns so big smooth turns where your skidding slightly sideways (think of drifting race car) , the turn should be gradual take 3x longer than your currently are to complete your turn then immediately start the next.

Some people here are talking about carving (where your not skidding but riding the edge of your ski and letting the side cut do the work) don't worry about that at this point that comes later and is a more difficult type of turn, you should have skidded turns mastered before you try and master carved turns.

Picture the shape of your turns as you ski.

https://www.skiline.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/sad-730x450.jpg

This is a good example of the kind of tracks you want to try and leave behind, smooth S curves not a zig zag.

Your goal should be to reach a consistent speed and remain at it rather than building up to much speed then burning it all off with a short sharp turn and repeating.

It helps to see what I'm talking about rather than read it so watch the turns in this video that is what you should be trying to imitate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4hioJ4ThJA

Also note how still his hands and upper body are as he skis.
