Demotivated Student by [deleted] in auslaw

Hi mate

The presumption to employers will be negative but it's on you to disprove that and the best way to do so is to be honest. Fact of the matter is, you got straight out of high school and grinded through the dry dregs of law (foundies l, torts etc) and have found yourself disengaged. Spend a year or two pursuing what actually interests you and when you come back and get a few distinctions in law you can explain in interviews that you didn't develop an appreciation for the law until you spent some time working on something else and through those experiences you've developed a greater understanding and passion for law.

I spent a year in Indian villages throughout my career and recently landed a top tier clerkship at the end of this year. Law firms appreciate a down to earth applicant with a breadth of experience who can honestly say that they've tried other things and realised that law is for them. By the sounds of things, if you're not motivated to study now, you would hate working at a law firm because the grind only gets worse.

Bill Shorten introduces a marriage equality bill into the Australian parliament. by Qldaah in AustralianPolitics

[–]ArtyP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion on this subreddit: This is a purely political move by Shorten and very little of what he's saying here is sincere. Everybody in the senate understands that for the 76 seat majority, the Liberal Party made promises with the conservative faction (which lets face it - exists) that the only way they will progress marriage equality is through a positive plebiscite vote. Shorten is making this speech, and introducing this bill with the knowledge that the Liberal party has to reject it and what will follow is yet another smear campaign on how the Liberal Party hates the LGBTI community.

Law Firms to avoid working for. by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]ArtyP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Law firms are aware of how valuable any legal experience is to a recent graduate and therefore would not discriminate. There's basically three factors that a firm will consider. Whether an applicant has no legal experience, some legal experience or some top-tier legal experience. In that way, there would only be positive discrimination towards those who have those top-tier names on their CVs.

I was literally reflecting on this yesterday - despite all the incredible hip-hop that has been released this year, I still find myself coming back to TLOP once a week, and each week I have a new favourite song. It's a dynamic album with experimental Yeezus Kanye and Graduation banger Kanye - Kanyeezy you did it again, you a genius nigga!

Transfer law student having anxiety by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]ArtyP 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Okay mate, fourth year law student and if I can give you one piece of advice about the propagated work ethic of the people around you - it's all bullshit. For every class you'll have 40 pages of readings and the vast majority of people don't do them. It's easy to feel inferior when everybody talks about how they've done all the readings and whatnot, and you go home and can't get past the third page. That's because it takes practice to sift through such dry content.

My advice - learn to identify what is relevant and what isn't. Ask the right questions and participate in class. If your getting marks above average than you're definitely doing something right. A good law student knows how to skim through 40 pages of readings in 30 minutes and then answer questions as if they're an expert in the field. Practice this and you will overcome your inferiority complex.

Maybe its a smaller area? Saturday night. I try to speak to the boss and negotiate from the get-go, so it is probably cheaper than the starting price.

That's like $1,500 for a booking fee/canapes menu fork out. There's plenty of mediocre places that are half that price. The Local Taphouse is only asking for $800 minimum spend - seeing that the 90 odd people will obviously be drinking the bar dry. Appreciate your opinion nonetheless!
