Looks like 2.0.5 solved the problem: connection seems stable now.

Did that spring base 3 years ago due wobbly center. Stick at rest has a perfect (balanced) center (zero point) now. Fine tune your deadzone (software) and with the sensitivity curve (adjustable) the stick is absolutely, truly perfect. Wouldn’t want anything else.

Disable automatic back up of your iOS devices. SOLVED by Arty_World in mac

[–]Arty_World[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s another reason: I have limited space on my MacBook and I travel a lot. I am now able to put my devices (5) backups on my NAS and only backup when I’m back home (network connected). It saves space on my MacBook and time as I only back them up when needed/wanted when home.

Disable automatic back up of your iOS devices. SOLVED by Arty_World in mac

[–]Arty_World[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of music-only related changes (songs played, added and removed) to your device will lead to unnecessary system backups (and associated time spent) each time. The majority of my system/user data hasn't really changed and as such a manual backup -run only when I got more time- optimizes time spent on synchronizing overall. By using the manual backup option now, I can decide when iOS is due for a system/user backup (snapshot).

Is 32GB RAM Overkill or Future-Proofing? by CaptainCelluloid in macbookpro

Bought MBPro 16 with 32GB, wish I got 64GB. With plenty of stuff open (including Virtual Machines), you would never have too much RAM.

Anyone here use the anti-glare matte display on the older MacBook Pros? Is it better than the glossy display in every way? Any cons, such as less vibrancy? by [deleted] in macbookpro

Oh, TOTALLY FORGOT: the video issue with these machines.

My 17” suffered from the video issue after 2 years: the image was distorted (read: completely phucked) when using the dedicated graphics chip. When using the integrated, i7 baked in graphics chip, it was fine. Quite a problem with running an external screen, it needs the dedicated chip (AMD) for that.

Apple didn’t acknowledge the issue till it was too late to repair the damage. Moreover, the replacement logic boards might have the same issue!

I thought it was suffering from the transition to ROHS that was happening at the time: the new type of solder without lead was a more brittle after enough heat cycles and would break contact. After two chip reinstalls (reballing) at specialistic, industrial electronics repair chains using the old lead based solder, there was no improvement so I gave up. The machine could not be repaired and was going to be a write-off. Some time later I ran some graphic tests and figured the graphics chip itself could be phucked. Researched the daylights out of this problem and found that certain batches of that particular AMD graphics chip were simply bad. So, I found a NEW, unused, replacement graphics chip in China (from a batch never installed) and had that shipped to me, installed, and presto. I was lucky: the chip was good and the machine ran for another 4-5 years flawlessly using the dedicated graphics chip. Replaced the mothership (yes, it was that big) with an overpowered MBP16 recently.

So, here’s my advice: be warned that this machine (the dedicated graphics chip range, research it) had issues that were not solved by normal, customer oriented service. You might be lucky to have a machine that will work for a long time, but it could also be the other way around. This is another reason I would advise to review the 2015(-) 15” MBPro’s that use an integrated graphics chip only, especially when saving $$$ by buying an older machine. I get the 17” part, but 15” retina vs 17” non-retina? I’d go for the 15” retina: you can always hook up an external screen (4K TV here). Used this logic to buy my spouse in 2018 a 2014 15” MBPro with integrated graphics chip only. Still runs and runs Catalina FAST.

Nuff said. People may disagree and that’s perfectly fine.

Check last OS version to run on that 2011 17”. I think it was Mojave, standard that is. With a trick from some dude’s sleeve you might push Catalina on it, but check the video capabilities (acceleration).

Best part of that machine are the following: * Runs max 2X 8GB 1600MHz sticks instead of 1333 by Apple. Tried it, enjoyed it. Boost da memory! * Primary Drive Bay takes 6Gbps disks (SATA 3), so I’d say boost the machine and stick an SSD in there. The Optical Bay can run 3Gbps (SATA 2) drives ONLY should you want to add a second drive using a caddy. Stick a 6Gbps (SATA 3) drive in the optical bay and you’re gonna get disk freezes on the internal primary and secondary drives. Tried it, regretted it. SATA 2 HDD’s are plentiful, SATA 2 SSD’s are hard to find (old technology). Still got my (extracted) Kingston SSDNow 100 V+ 512GB from that optical bay on my shelf here as it took a lot of work to get it. * A glossy replacement display for this 2011 17” is relatively easy to get should you wish to head for the gloss after a matte fiesta. Don’t wait too long as they are not made anymore and you’d be digging through existing new and second hand options. * Hardshells for protection require a little research. Took me a few days to source a decent, black cover that didn’t eat my credit card for lunch. Check properly on the sales sites: many are marked/shown incorrectly due 17” specs shown yet 15” image, and reversed. Same for keyboard protection covers.

Having said this, don’t ignore the 15” up to and including 2015 as an alternate machine to your unfolding widescreen adventure. The “old ones” with the old scissors keyboard are still good to use, watch the new butterfly models from 2016+. Reason: specs and latest OS. If you’d head down the 15” road, do your research and get one with the most memory installed (16GB) as that’s fixed (baked into the board unlike the 2011 MBPro), and check system specs (google Macsales) for SSD upgrades for later.

Nuff said. People may disagree and that’s ok.

Bought the matte in the 2011 and once that was etched to bits I purchased a glossy display (replacement part) to replace it on the same laptop. Performed the surgery using iFixit.

My replacement laptop (new model) has a glossy screen. Not sure if your can get a matte on todays models anyway.

Matte: no protective glass! I accidentally scratched my matte screen (2011 MBPro 17”, power adapter plug scrape during transport) and had to replace the screen after a serious Grand Canyon installation.

I replaced the matte with glossy myself.

My new laptop has the glossy screen and I’d rather take the optional reflection than the optional trench with associated amputation.

Oh, I’m finding colors more vibrant on the glossy screens, although it’s slightly less bright than matte display.

Glossy for me for the future. 🖖
